goTenna, lets you send messages even when there’s no cell service

For those times when your cell service provider is not working or when you’re in an area where there’s no coverage, a device called the goTenna keeps you connected by letting you send messages to other goTenna users for free, even if you don’t have a signal or working internet connection.

goTenna is a Bluetooth-LE-equipped device that pairs with your smartphone (range of up to 20 feet) and, with the help of an app, lets you send messages or share your GPS coordinates to other goTenna-equipped smartphones for free. It uses low-frequency radio waves to transmit messages so it doesn’t rely on cell towers, WiFi, or working Internet connection. It works even if your smartphone is in Airplane mode.

Nokia once tried to sell a phone with a built-in walkie talkie IIRC. I guess the telecoms wrangled that one.

Yari na naman ito sa mga telco kapag sumikat ito. Plus this is good din kapag close line from international telco, you can now use this. Yun lang, walang phone capabilitites but still good for communication :-)

It sucks at ground range, it is meant for higher elevations

yun lang…it may sucks kapag ground level. Upon reading the specs (its site), it could reach 50 miles…eh ang buong EDSA, around 13 miles lang.

Siguro nga sa bundok to bundok maganda ito, yung walang interference na signal…but here in the City…well I really don’t know.

yup. otherwise its probably cheaper to buy walkie talkies

I’m pre-ordering now. If this really works then its a better purchase than a repeater, which has been prohibited by the NTC and I can bring it with me anywhere.
