Apple iOS: The Best and Worst of

Mobile operating systems is probably one of the most sensitive topics in the industry. Insult one platform and you start a flame war. But, let’s move on, shall we? Go back to basics. In its current state, what does iOS have to offer? What does it lack? Read on and join in the discussion.

No one will ever forget that moment: Steve Jobs occupied the stage and introduced the first iPhone in 2007. iOS was really meant to be easy-to-use and smart at the same time. Apple succeeded with this and they immediately rose through the charts. It expanded through the iPod Touch, the iPad and the iPad Mini.

But in a much smarter world, will the same OS conquer? Put the original iPhone OS beside iOS 6 and you’ll barely see any difference. Is that a good thing?

The Best of iOS

1. Simplicity – Take an iPhone in your hands, power it on and play with it for minutes and we bet you’ll know how to use it instantly. The use of a single home button and the elegance of the icons are enough for almost everybody. Not everyone enjoys exploring their devices, and with iOS, you don’t need to.

2. “There’s an app for that.” –  iOS is an app-centered platform. It’s basically a grid of apps. Titles usually come to iOS first (Temple Run, Instagram etc.) and not only that it gets them first, but they also get the best ones. Even games like Infinity Blade won’t see the light of day in Android or any competing platform.

3. Straightforward – Apple hides everything you don’t need to see. It feels like you’re dictated upon and it’s a good thing for the average user. It doesn’t confuse people, it doesn’t show you options you don’t understand and above all, it’s all done for you.

4. It was a pioneer – Being first in the business is a good thing, and this is why Apple has a great share of the market today. No matter how tempting it is for users to shift platforms, it’s difficult and it’s all due to the money and time they’ve invested in iOS. It’s more than just an operating system; it’s an ecosystem.

The Worst Of iOS

1. Slow evolution – Take a look at iOS in 2007 and take a look at it now. What’s changed? iOS 6 has 200 new features, but who can name them? Windows Phone, Android and even BlackBerry 10 is evolving faster than iOS within the past few years. Sure, it nailed some features like Siri, but how about updates like Apple Maps? We could use some changes.

2. Lawsuits – Not really a side of iOS that people hate on, but a side of Apple itself. Most consumers won’t know about this, but the internet goes off on this topic like crazy. Apple sues mostly on the iOS front; you don’t see them suing for Macs and iPods. Their obvious love for monopolizing the market isn’t a thing to like, and the less competition they have, the less innovative they will be. So, here’s to hoping they’ll stop.

3. Price – For a device running a simple OS, it’s quite expensive. We understand that Apple is a very valuable company and that the law of supply & demand is applicable here as well. The demand and supply should meet halfway, and that is called the equilibrium price. We won’t see any cheaper iOS devices yet, because until someone wants an iOS device, the price will remain high. So we guess that’s where the sad part lies; only a few can purchase a device running iOS.

Apple’s iOS was there from the start, and it’s trying to maintain its position as one of the best mobile operating systems out there. Will we ever see a massive rethinking of iOS? Will we see cheaper iPhones? Under new management, we can’t really tell. What about you, what were your best and worst experiences with iOS? Where do you see it in the next 5 years? Please share and leave a comment down below.

“4. It was a pioneer – Being first in the business is a good thing, and this is why Apple has a great share of the market today.”

I mentioned this before, and I’ll say it again. Apple is NOT the pioneer. Waaaay before the term Smartphone came about, there was the “PDA” or Personal Digital Assistant.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDA

… this was pioneered by Palm and Microsoft but they did not enhance/improve it as the years went by. They were the true pioneers.

    • iOS goat meeeeeeeehh says:

@justin: i agree, i also owned a palm pda and a palm phone and still working fine with 8 hours battery life, i use it once in awhile :)

    • salt says:

@iOS Goat As much as I hate Apple, I agree on your sentiment. Bakit nga ba wala pang 4.1 update yung Note 1 ko? haha

FREKING DORK: The Best and Worst of

    The Best: hmmmmm………

The Worst: Everything he/she writes. Nonsense.

    • Kanor says:

Hoy bobo. ^___^

I just would like to chime in on one of what’s best for iOS: the phone design, there’s nothing like it. Once you hold one in your hand, you’ll know the design and form factor has been very well-thought of.

  4. fucktard says:

“Being first in the business is a good thing, and this is why Apple has a great share of the market today” — what the hell, did the writer (Bob Freking) do research on this? –It’s more than just an operating system; it’s an ecosystem. — do you know what eco system means? you’re an idiot.

    • Bob Freking says:

Being first in a certain business is a competitive advantage aka an edge. This applies to all types of businesses.

Throw back the question at you: do you know what ecosystem means?

      Took up Business lessons.

    • Bob-o says:

Talo ka dito fucktard. Never mess with a Dork.

Whatever dork hahaha!

    • Bob-o says:

“@bobfreking: I get that you’re trying to be logical here, but dude, did your logic ever do you right?”

“@bobfreking: When an article gets comments, it should be about the article, not the author. If you want to comment about the author, go tell him. lol.”

“@bobfreking: I want to hear sensible things. I’m quite immune to non-sense already.”

See :) this is Dork! HAHAHAHAHA! Walang mananalo sa opinyon ng mga Dorks. Hahahahaha

  6. bone crusher says:

    2. Lawsuits Di ba tungkol sa iOS yung article mo? tanga much?

  7. Nothing says:

Well, I must say. Nagsayang lang ako ng pera for my android phone. Hindi ko ma-achieve yung gusto ko sa applications mostly in creating music which I need, Talk about Application Compatibility? The Hell pare! (wala pang android app ang nakakapantay sa garage band ng iOS when it comes to sound and simplicity.)

‘There’s an app for that’ for me ito talaga ang strength ng iOS.
    Lesson learned.

    My two cents. :)
    - Bibili palang ng iPhone at iPad Mini. :)

  8. jefdev says:

If your first in the business, then you would anticipate a competition, and likewise, that competition will twist your vision and make them their own and show people that their product is better than the pioneers.

All I’m saying here is no matter how fierce the competition is, we should all give respect, and I know credit is very hard to give, to the pioneers.

If you would switch them, “IF” Android or Windows or Blackberry were the pioneers, and Apple iOS ‘just’ followed the pattern, would they not sue each other with the reasonable standards.

Get over it and just use which OS you want to use, and STOP DEBATING over some software that you use just to play TEMPLE RUN.

    Power of CHOICE people.

@frenchy sorry pero just to crack the shell, this blog/page is being run by advertisements that these readers are seeing. It might not be the whole of it, pero kabilang sila sa nagpapasweldo sa writers dito.

at paano naman ako naging “pa-good samaritan”? ang point ko lang, pwede naman critical ng hindi nangiinsulto. now if you enjoy seeing these ugly words being thrown to a writer here just because they don’t like his writings/opinions, etc., then YOU ARE PATHETIC.

    • salt says:

“ang ibig kong sabihin, hindi directly sa readers nanggagaling ang sinusweldo ng mga writers dito”
Di mo ata gets? Paki-basang mabuti. Sa advertisers nanggagaling ang pera na INAABOT ni Yuga sa mga writers na ito.

“at paano naman ako naging “pa-good samaritan”? ang point ko lang, pwede naman critical ng hindi nangiinsulto.”
Come on, the comments section is OPEN to everyone’s insights/opinions/comments/suggestions. That’s part of being a writer/journalist. Kung di niya kaya, he/she should not be in the job, or he should be running a blog without a comments section.

“if you enjoy seeing these ugly words being thrown to a writer here just because they don’t like his writings/opinions, etc., then YOU ARE PATHETIC.”
Ooohh.. the irony na magsabi kang pathetic yung nagcomment. Doesn’t that make you the ‘pathetic’ one? :)

so the worst of iOS is its owner deciding to file lawsuits (i.e. not iOS itself), and that the hardware carrying it is expensive (i.e. not iOS itself).

iOS itself is technically free, but it’s not for sale. it comes free with the hardware. even if you have old hardware, even the update is free, and you get it on the same day as everyone else does.

the lawsuits… come on. as if other people don’t do that. people have to protect their intellectual property. if the courts decide against the lawsuit, e di yun na yon. how would YugaTech feel if i just create a whole new website using all YugaTech contents on it? you’ll let me be? or you’ll troll me na lang? or are you gonna sue me (assuming money to hire lawyers is not an issue for you)?

    • Bob Freking says:

I totally get your point, but in my opinion, Apple is being a bully on the iOS front. I’m not sure how things like this are possible, but Apple can sue because of how icons and rounded corners are used on competitors. Worse is that Apple sues only the threats, therefore creating a monopoly which leads to less innovation.

As someone who enjoys business, I get that business is business, but I think water overflows at times and ethics is lost.

“Not really a side of iOS that people hate on, but a side of Apple itself.”

I included that just to refresh on what to dislike, the anti-competitive practice. Imagine a world with only iOS.

    • Bob-o says:

      @Freking

Newer versions of Android & Windows Phone can’t run flash either.

      Just saying. :)

I hate Apple. Yes I do. But I own an iPhone 5 and iPad 4. I really don’t get why buy a device with a very simple OS and has less capabilities than its competitor like Samsung with a very high pricetag. Until now its still a question unanswered. So I decided to buy an iPhone 5 and iPad 4. Well I like the simplicity of the OS and loads of apps in it. After buying it I felt that its not worth my hard earned money. I’m going to use these devices for two years and after that I will switch to Windows Phone. I find it more value for money considering it has the same smooth and sleek OS as iOS. Lack of apps? I’m not an app person anyway.

These cheap android devices made it possible even for the masa to experience having a smartphone. Its simply this: ios for the elite android for the masa.

    1. Play MKV, AVI, RMVB, and FLV videos right out of the box
    2. Share photos I took using the phone via bluetooth to other phones
    3. Delete stored pictures inputed by computer directly from the phone
    4. Change batteries when you needed
    5. Use as USB when connected directly to the computer
    6. No miniUSB standard in EU
    7. Need Itunes to function

You need to buy apps for above functionalities that even Samsung pocket can do out of the box.

  25. Googoo says:

Fragmentation should never be an issue.
An old Ipad may have been upgraded to IOS6. But it can barely play the games true gamers wanted because it’s GFX can’t handle it.
Old devices upgrading to IOS6 is still worthless. Parang konswelo-de-b0b0 lang. Niloloko nyo lang sarili nyo.
