Going Pro: Network or Indie?

I went to meet an old acquaintance last week who was pitching an idea to me. Our discussion revolved around the choice between putting up an independent blog or writing for a blog network. I explained that there are two sides of the coin when going pro — would you consider it a business or a career? To illustrate, I compared the advantages and disadvantages of the different salary models currently being used by blog networks.

Early this year, when I was still writing for BlogHerald, I wrote this little observation…

Hack attack in progress

One of the ugliest thing that could happen to a blog or a website is getting hacked. For a person like me who runs his own dedicated server, this is a daily pain in the neck. We get hack attacks everyday, some by expert hackers but mostly script kiddies who take some scripts laying around somewhere and try to inject malicious codes into your site hoping to get access.

Since Friday, my blog has been targeted incessantly. You could be next! (Or you’ve already been, you just don’t know it yet.) So be wary.

Pownce invites, anyone?

PownceJust got into Pownce, thanks to Jomar. Curiosity got the better of me and I signed up. You can check my Pownce account here, though there’s nothing much. The New York Times has a glaring review. Works like Twitter or Jaiku plus some more features but that’s it.

Anybody wants to try it?

The Quad Cores are down by half!

I almost bought an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600 (2.8GHz) 2 weeks ago. Good thing I waited. That time, the Intel Q6600 2.4GHz 8MB (Core 2 Duo Quad Core) was selling for a steep price of Php29,500. Well, that’s 4 cores in all so I thought the price was justified. That time, AMD announced its price cuts on all X2 and Opteron processors. Intel was supposed to follow suit after introducing their newer lines (E6550 at 2.33GHz, E6750 at 2.66GHz and E6850 3.0GHz C2D) running at 1,333MHz FSB with 4MB L2 cache.

Imagine my excitement when I checked the new prices today.

The best Filipino Software Developers are headed for Singapore

An article at the Inquirer last night revealed that Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA) has expressed alarm over the rampant recruitment of Filipino software professionals by Singaporean companies. Migs, opened up the discussion at PTB: Can Pinoy Software Companies Stop the Exodus to Singapore?

The obvious answer is no. And we all know why.

Book 7: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Contest

Harry PotterThis is not a book recommendation. This is a book contest. Yes, get the chance to win the book 7 of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. After last Saturday’s brouhaha over the book launch, I got a barrage of spoilers from avid readers. Now that got me a little irked. How will I enjoy the movie now? So, I thought of a plan. Bury them story spoilers and I’m giving away the book as a deal (and no I didn’t read it!).

Wanna know how you can win this Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book? See mechanics after the jump.

Digg LogoIn an unexpected and seemingly unpopular move by Digg, founder Kevin Rose announced yesterday that it has dropped its Google’s Premium Publisher status to become a solid partner with Microsoft in the next 3 years. John Battelle’s Federated Media used to be the sole ad campaign manager for Digg, which draws in 146,630,000 page views per month.

SERPs Update: Do custom permalinks work?

Several people have emailed me asking whether the change from the default permalinks to the new custom permalinks will have an effect on the blog’s search engine rankings, Page Rank and ultimately traffic. With over 1,700+ posts, I was a bit worried the results will be tragic. But I held my hopes up.

Only two days after I rebooted this blog with a new theme and change the permalink structure, I’m already seeing the results of the search engines re-indexing my blog. Now, I think I have the answer to this. See results after the jump.

Flying the Chopper

One of the things I’ve always wanted to do (and this is on my secret “to do” list) is to be able to fly a chopper or even a 2-seater civilian plane. I know, I have to get a license for that and the flight schools are too damn expensive. But, it doesn’t hurt to dream.

Yesterday, I did just that. No, scratch that part. I did something close to that. We flew a chopper in Tagaytay. Let me share with you some of the photos I took. Pictures after the jump.

Will Eskwela replace the class reunion?

Eskwela.comAfter over a dozen invites, I finally gave in and tried Eskwela.com. We had a sneak preview account before it was launched last year but it was way deep in the beta (or was it alpha?) version to really try out and write a fair review. A recent assignment (Friend Request) prompted me to revisit the site. Unlike before, the bugs have been sorted out and the site loads quite fast (not sure if that’s good or bad as an indication of visitor usage) and according to Alexa, site usage has been steadily climbing.

Loving the new Flock 0.9 browser

Flock LogoSince, the initial release of Flock, I’ve been slowly liking this Firefox-based browser. It’s the second most commonly used browser in my laptop, next to Firefox. My only gripe before was the utter lack of 3rd-party plug-ins or extensions, a feature I find essential for better browsing experience.

Just recently, the new version release of Flock (version 0.9) has much improved and I’m liking it even better.

Smart launches myTV

Just came back from the official launch of Smart myTV, the new mobile TV service in partnership with 360media (and MediaQuest). They designed the NBC Tent at the Fort with picturesque booths representing situations/locations where myTV could be enjoyed — on the beach, the golf course, at the bus stop, coffee shop, living room, and inside the car (which I think is a potential road hazard).

YugaTech CSS reboot!

yugatechThis has long been overdue but we’ve finally moved on to a new blog design. For the past 2 and a half years, since the last reboot and move to WordPress, this blog had sported the heavily-modified Connections theme, prolly the most kick-ass opensource theme of that time.

Today, after about 7 months of sluggish progress, I present you the new YugaTech theme. This 3-column design was inspired by K2 and GlossyBlue themes.
