Asus Eee PC 1004DN now with DVD Drive

On of the more obvious differentiation between a netbook and a regular notebook or laptop is that the latter has one while netbooks don’t. Asus is changing that definition by introducing the Eee PC 1004DN.

The State of WiMax: What’s the real deal?

A couple of days ago, I attended a WiMax forum hosted by Intel Philippines. They are helping push the use of WiMax in emerging markets where there are very low but fast growing PC users. Why?

I’m just not cool enough to be a Mac person.

Last week, Microsoft put out an ad about a lady who wanted to buy a 17″ laptop for under $1,000. Not finding a Mac for that price, she quipped “I’m just not cool enough to be a Mac person“. That line hit a major nerve among Mac fans for reasons I don’t really understand.

Page eCPM Down: Is AdSense going broke?

A number of bigtime AdSense Publishers have shared to me that their Page eCPM has dramatically declined in the last 12 months. Whether this trend coincides with the US financial crisis or something else is yet unsure. One might even ask the question “Is Google AdSense going broke?

MSI Wind U100 with Atom N280

Now this is an upgrade that I should have seen earlier. PC Corner is offering a new batch of MSI Wind U100 with a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280, at a price that will certainly leave the Acer Aspire One D150 in the dust.

LG FB163 Hi-Fi Stereo System Review

The LG FB163 kick-ass stereo system, DVD player and iPod dock all in a single compact yet elegant box. Too bad I had to return the unit back after 3 weeks of taking center stage in my living room.

HP Mini Note 2140 Priced at Php23,950

A number of people have been asking about the HP Mini 2140 and when it will be available in the Philippines. I initially thought it will take some time since the HP Mini 1000 is already in shelves. Looks like Complink has them on stock at a retail price of Php23,950

Globe WiMax Internet is here!

Just got an SMS confirmation from Globe that they’ve already rolled out and servicing customers on their WiMax network. I’m still getting the details but the Inquirer ran the story last night that it will be 512Kbps at Php799 per month. This service will certainly be competing against Smart Bro’s Fixed Wireless offering.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i takes Full HD Videos

Now this is going to disappoint those who bought the Canon 50D earlier and paid premium for it — Canon’s new entry level dSLR, the EOS Rebel T1i, now offers full HD video capture at 30fps.

Is there hope in the Net Cafe Business?

About a year ago, I wrote about the state of the internet cafe business in the Philippines and why it’s a seemingly losing battle. A couple of days ago, I mentioned that I started venturing into the Internet Cafe with a friend. I got emails asking why I thought the net cafe is still a viable business and here’s my take.

iPod Shuffle 3G: Unboxing Photos

Apple sent in a review unit of the new iPod Shuffle 3G. Though obviously lacking the usual control buttons, I’m still a bit amused at how small this iPod is (compared to the older generation Shuffles). See tons of unboxing photos after the jump.

WalterMart Free WiFi and Movie Tickets

The WalterMart at Pasong Tamo corner Pasay road is one of my hang-out places (the Starbucks shop at the ground floor being my part-time office and business meeting place). It all started when I discovered they had free wifi years back (aptly named linksys). The management has re-introduced that service and now offers free wifi to mallers; and as a bonus, free movie tickets too.

Dells sells Pasay operations to Teleperformance

I blogged about this last April 2008 from a tip given to me and though there was no solid evidence then, it turned out to be partially true. Dell Philippines has sold its call center at Mall of Asia, Pasay City to Teleperformance.

Are CRT Monitors being phased out?

Over the week-end, a friend and I went out buying sets of PCs for a small internet cafe business we’re putting up in the province. We were mulling between cheap CRT monitors and LCDs but it turns out a lot of shops have them in stock anymore.

Why Dual-SIM phones aren’t picking up?

Someone asked me why I don’t use dual-SIM phones instead of carrying 2 or 3 phones at a time. I said that if there were only high-end phones that support dual-SIM, I might consider using them. So the question popped up — why aren’t dual-SIM phones picking up?
