Apple TV: bringing iTunes to your big screen

Listen to article

Aside from the iPhone that’s getting a lot of raves at the CES MacWorld today, the AppleTV isn’t gonna miss a beat as well.

For only $299, you get a 40GB device that connects to your TV via an HDMI port or component video and audio ports. Its built-in, 802.11b/g & 802.11n wireless capability syncs your iTunes library to any Mac or PC in the house. Comes with USB 2.0, Ethernet and powered by an Intel CPU.

Not sure if 40GB is big enough (why didn’t they put in at least 120?) but I know I can hook up my laptop to my TV and play everything off of it. Besides, I already have that Samsung 19″ LCD to watch movies with.

On the other hand, I’m pretty sure tons of people are dying to get that iPhone. If traffic to this blog from Google searches for “buy Apple iPhone” is any indication, that’s a lot.

54mbps is something like 6.7MB/sec data transfer. Not enough for HDTV? It maxes out to 720p only so a bit disappointing and behind its time.

JP beat me to it. I’d replace the HDD if I could and find a way to move info faster than WiFi allows. 40GB and 50~ mbps may be fine for audio, but HDTV? I don’t think so.

This sounds like a good deal compared to building a large or SFF PC with MythTV. I might even get one if it comes out at $299 converted to Peso. But I have to know first if I could replace the hard disk and if there’s an RJ45 port.
