When I finally saw the video of Steve Jobs announcing and demoing the Genius, the first thing that came to mind was *kaching*. I think you get the drift.
The idea behind iTunes Genius is that it “creates a playlist from songs in your library that go great together.” It’s basically a smart discovery-recommendation engine that offers a new set of songs from a user-selected song in your playlist.

The Genius idea actually attracts more purchases from the iTunes store. The engine actually up-sells you new songs you might want to own and listen too. Apple should have had this feature much, much earlier — it’s a great idea and it’s something that could tremendously push their iTunes sales. Kaching!

it doesn’t work in Manila
I just downloaded the iTunes 8.0 and the Genius option works pretty well. An apple ID is required but sign-up is easy.
A little FYI, iTunes had an online sidebar option before which gives info about the song, other songs from its album and songs you may like.
It does work in Manila, you just have to create an apple ID and set it up for the Philippines. no credit card option needed just verification of email.
interesting to see apple finally take advantage of this technology. the rationale is clear, offer another lure to persons, to try out and buy other music. wonder if it’ll take off.
@Jeff — how can I create an apple ID? I’ve tried making one (even using my mom’s credit card) but to now avail.
The iTunes Genius is more than just about songs that you may want to buy.
It also creates genius playlists of songs that are *ALREADY* in your library based on one song.
This is a feature that I have been looking for in media players since forever. Very useful in my book.
About creating an iTunes music store account, a step-by-step guide is provided here on this page:

This is like the Pandora musical genome project. The genome project is really cool and many online radios have something like it. Apple, though, will put the concept into the mass market and they will be the company that makes billions out of this.
sorry, it’s Pandora Music Genome Project
for Apple its an awesome and really genius idea, I do agree that they shoul’ve added this feature a long long time ago.
I updated and viola! I have 3 new playlists on my Touch. Genius is really A GENIUS!
LINTEK, it’s copied from Online Radios like Pandora. They din’t think up the idea. Their Genius software is actually inferior from what you can get from Rhapsody, Last.fm or Pandora.
@JEZ : To create an apple ID and activate Genius,
Download the new release of iTunes 8.0
then click turn on Genius on the side bar,
then create a new account I remember they will just ask for a name email and country (um, choose Philippines cause they can detect your IP adress from here anyway)
then wait for the verification message via email.
TA DA!
i don’t like the genius in my iTunes (personal preference) it just clutters up my iTunes like a Yahoo Messenger Ad or a pop up..
yuga, how do you turn it off?
iTunes Menu Store -> Turn off Genius
@jeff, Ah I see thanks.
I’m wondering when will itunes store be available locally, there is the app store already.
