Backup My Blog

Listen to article

Check out this new remote service for backing up your blog. BackUpMyBlog is still in beta and allows free accounts for bloggers to backup their blog on a remote service.

It’s currently available for blogs where you have install privileges so BlogSpot and LiveJournal accounts are out of the list (your blogs need to run on a mySQL database too to be supported). Did a quick signup and you will be greeted with a step-by-step setup wizard which will ask for your FTP account (since I think they will be uploading some scripts and installing them).

Each account is only limited to 10MB of compressed mySQL file and once you exceed that size, the old copies are deleted. I’m not sure how would that go if your existing blog is already larger than that.

My only (and biggest) concern with the servcie is that you are giving it access to your account. Even if their servers are secured, a hacking incident could compromise everyone on their service list.

Go check it out for yourself: BackupMyBlog.com

Am not sure as for LJ users but I do recall someone telling about using an LJ client that has features for backing up every entry, including the locked as friends’ only read or private ones but I have never tried it myself. I am partly afraid that I would have a lot of entries to back up because I have been using it since 2003.
