Speaking at CEL Manila Tomorrow!

Consumer Electronics Live! (CEL Manila 2009) starts today until Sunday at the World Trade Center, Pasay City. I will be speaking at a panel tomorrow afternoon so drop by if you can.

Actually, I am at some island in Albay right now (Misibis Bay, Cagraray Island) for the week-end and my talk will be streamed on-stage via Skype Video. I think this is a first for me and a true testament that broadband internet in the Philippines is readily accessible even in faraway islands.

Glad to have Sun Wireless Broadband helped in setting this up for me and we’ve just finished testing the connection this evening. Looks like all is set for tomorrow.

P.S. I heard the Dell Adamo M13 and the Adamo XPS were launched today. Check out the post at PTB.

Winning the Honda Challenge Cup

Last Saturday, we took the Honda Challenge Cup — a friendly competition on driving a Honda car to get the most fuel-efficient ride. I missed the earlier event a couple months back intended for the media people so I got slated for this last one.

The objective was to drive any of the Honda cars — Civic, Jazz, Accord and CRV — and use the least amount of gas along the way. Of course, there were tips given to us on how to achieve this.

Each team has two members, a driver and a navigator (my teammate was Randy of the Daily Contributor). I took the driver’s seat with the Honda CRV 2.0 MT. There were two legs of the race — one is city driving (The Fort to Makati to Petron NLEX) and the other is highway driving (Petron NLEX to Angeles City and back). Each stop is measured with the distance traveled as well as amount of gas consumed.

For the city drive, we logged 10 kilometers per liter while for the highway driving, we bumped it up to 14km/liter. Our overall average was 13km/liter. We won in our category by 1km/liter and also manage to land 3rd place over-all (the two Honda Civics won the 1st and 2nd overall).

Good thing the Honda CRV has a digital meter that shows you a rough average of your fuel consumption. I merely adjusted my driving speed based on the meter (which gave me an average 17.8km/liter).

The biggest lesson — driving at 60km/hour on a highway gets you the best results in fuel efficiency (others claim it’s supposed to be 80kmph). To make sure the highway patrol doesn’t flag me for driving below minimum speed, I always tail the slowest 10-wheeler truck in the rightmost lane.

Smart gives out free PlugIt to students

The Smart B Free event held today at the Mega-Tent, Meralco Avenue is an attempt to give-away 10 thousand free SmartBro PlugIt modems to students from UAAP and NCAA universities.

SmartBro USB modems are customized according to university logos (see sample above for Ateneo’s Blue Eagles). These are limited edition USB dongles that are only given away that day. These aren’t just stickers but printed into the plastic dongle itself.

All you needed to do is be at the venue and bring a school ID to get one for free. If you’re not qualified, you can still buy one for just Php895.

There were lots of giveaways, food, drinks, t-shirts and bands. However, the mega-tent seemed a bit empty around noon when I got there. Looks like they weren’t able to reach their target number of 10,000.

There were also promos for SmartBro ShareIt — get a Pentium 4 PC set for only Php4,000 when you subscribe for 24 months.

At DZMM Teleradyo’s U-Talk

Last week-end, I guested at DZMM Teleradyo’s U-Talk with host Roselle Manahan and we talked about gadgets for the whole hour. This was my second radio guesting at DZMM (first one was for Radyo Negosyo) and by far the most enjoyable one.

I thought the one hour show would be too long so I brought a dozen or so gadgets with me for the show-and-tell — my recently-bought Sony Vaio P, Aspire One AO751, iPhone 3G, Nokia E71, SE C905, Samsung B2100, Canon 40D, LG KM900, Nokia E51, Samsung i8910, Red Zune and 3 iPods. We only covered half of them before we ran out of time.

I might go back and do a couple more shows in the future and we’ll just focus with one gadget category at a time. Compared to my other TV guesting, I think I liked radio more as I feel less stressed and more composed (and I could use my radio voice… hehe).

PopDev Media Awards to cite Bloggers

For the last two years, I’ve been invited by the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD) to be in the panel of judges for their annual PopDev Media Awards. This year, they’ve decided to add a special citation for citizen journalists (bloggers).

This year’s awards will include Citations for Blog (text) and Photo Blogs (Single Photo and Photo Essay) in recognition of the significant contribution of bloggers, or citizen journalists, in enriching the public discussion of population and human development concerns vis-à-vis socio-economic issues.

The 5th PopDev Media Awards is open to all print, broadcast, online, photo, and citizen journalists nationwide and covers topics on public health, reproduction, climate change, poverty, education, housing and urban development.

Winners in the major categories will receive a cash prize, trophy, certificate, and a chance to participate in a study trip to a PLCPD project area in the Philippines.

We had some pretty interesting discussion during the last roundtable of judges between the criteria on “form vs. substance”. It was an easy debate when it comes to professional journalists but is different when you bring in bloggers to the list.

Honda Car Road Test in Bohol

We’ve been road-tripping around Bohol since this morning together with the team of people from Honda Cars Philippines driving four of their new entry-level cars. The sedan has several unique features that would catch the curiosity of gadget-lovers out there.

They shipped in four of the new 2009 Honda City and we took turns driving around as we stop by a number of tourist spots.

We were also asked to bring our iPods so we can test the in-car sound system, a request I was more than happy to oblige.

Will post more details about this and my impressions tomorrow evening once we finish the final leg of our test drive. This is also my first time to do some sort of review of any automotive vehicle so my focus will be more on the tech behind the whole package.

Photo World Asia 2009

The Photo World Asia 2009 is currently being held at the Glorietta Activity Center (started last January 29 until February 4, 2009).

Went to the venue yesterday to check out if there are some new stuff to see. Sad to say though but the event seems uneventful. I’ve been to the same in the last 2 years (Photo World Manila 2007, Photo World Asia 2008) and this year’s round-up was smaller than ever.

I think the event only took half the space of the activity center and there wasn’t much activity going. Of course, the Canon booth always took the center stage (by bringing a female model for a free-for-all photoshoot). There weren’t any big discount sale though (unlike last year when I bought a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM).

JT PhotoWorld is still doing their annual sale there with 8% to 10% discounts on cash purchases.

Hundreds line up at Nokia 5800 launch

Over two hundred people lined up early today in front of the Nokia Store at Boni High Street to pick up their Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

If what I overheard from Nokia reps count was right, about 272 or so people signed up to get their reserved units. The Nokia 5800 is released at a special pre-order price of Php19,990.

Nokia PR shared accounts of people coming as far as Cebu to pick up their unit and several others already lining up very early in the morning just to be one of the first 58 to get a free Sennheiser HD-205 headset. They were initially worried nobody would show up.

Though the Nokia 5800 launch isn’t anything near to the numbers achieved by the iPhone 3G when it launched last year, this could be the longest line for any Nokia product in the country ever.
