When the 1-terabyte HDD broke the Php5,000-barrier ($100-barrier), I thought this will be the year when most PCs will be on the terabyte range. So I thought, let’s put it as a poll.

How much digital storage do you have at home?

As an example, I got 2 x 1TB HDD, 1 x 500GB, 1 x 640GB and 2 x 320GB at home for a total of 3.78TB. That does not include the portable storage I have on laptop/netbooks which adds up to another 570GB.

I’ve posted a poll on the sidebar with the following choices:

How much HDD storage do you have?

less than 250GB

under 1 terabyte

between 1 – 2 TB

more than 2TB

more than 5TB

You can leave a comment below or submit your answers in the poll.

Having had some billing issues on my postpaid account lately made me think if I should go back to prepaid again (besides, I’m no heavy texter or caller). Obviously, there are some advantages and disadvantages between the two.

This brings us to our poll of the week — are you on prepaid or postpaid? Why?

This time, our poll asks — Who is the best netbook-maker?

From my count, we got at least 15 brands currently selling locally:

Acer

Astone

Asus

Dell

Gateway

Gigabyte

HP

Lenovo

The label ‘best’ is subjective and it could mean ‘best designed’, ‘best bang for the buck’, or ‘best performance’ so let’s just settle for ‘best-overall’. As usual, I’ve added the poll on the sidebar so you can send in your votes.

Note: Didn’t include LG and Samsung (and others) since they haven’t officially released their own netbooks in the Philippines.

My latest entry on the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic sparked a nice little debate on people’s preference and usage behavior between WiFi and 3G on mobile phones.

I thought it would be good if I asked my readers here which of the two modes of connectivity they often use.

So our poll for this week — WiFi or 3G: Which one do you often use with your phone?

As usual, I’ve added a poll at the sidebar so you can submit your votes there but please leave a comment if you want to share your own usage behavior and why you chose one over the other.

As for me, even if my place is full wireless, I think most often use 3G on my phone. I access 3G on the road, while driving and outside the house — with my phone, that would be about 90% of the time.

There are 2 factors that affected my usage behavior in favor of 3G — one is that I have allocated 3G minutes on my postpaid account and, second, 3G internet is pretty cheap and fast nowadays that I don’t really bother looking for free wifi whenever I’m in public places.

Update: I’d like to clarify that this poll is not about which is better or faster. It’s a survey which of the two modes of connection you often use despite the advantages of one over the other.

Let’s look at an example:

Mobile 3G on Phone: 90% coverage area of Metro Manila, 100 – 300Kbps speeds
WiFi on Phone: 1% coverage area of Metro Manila, 256Kbps – 3Mbps speeds

Is the mobility of a 3G connection more suitable for you or the speed of WiFi? And by the way, WiFi speed is also dependent on its source. If you’re using WiFi on dial-up connection, your WiFi is still going to be slow.

This week, our survey covers the micro-blogging service Plurk and Twitter. According to stats shown by Google Trends, the Philippines is ranked #3 visitor of Plurk.com worldwide.

Okay, it used to be #2 until Taiwan took that spot from us. On the other hand, we’re nowhere in the top 10 for Twitter.com.

Then again, between Plurk and Twitter, Plurk seems to be the more preferred choice among Filipinos. It’s yet unknown why this is so but if you look at the average profile of a Plurk user and a Twitter user, you will see the age range is much lower with Plurk.

The Philippines doesn’t normally follow the social networking trends in the US. We’re into Friendster more than Facebook, into Plurk more than Twitter, into LiveJournal and Multiply than WordPress and Blogger.

So our poll this week aims to answers some of these questions — Which micro-blogging tool do you favor? Plurk or Twitter?

Please send your answers to the poll section on the right and leave a comment here if you want to add something.

There was some theory going around that major phone manufacturers had to introduce brand new phone models every so often because survey says the average lifetime of a phone in the hands of consumers is about 8 months.

I’m not sure if there is truth in this but based on my observations with friends and relatives, that number is not very far off. People tend to switch phones very often so manufacturers have to hurry up introducing new ones before each cycle ends.

I’d like to take that theory into a test a do a little poll here — how often do you switch/buy/replace your primary phone?

Less than 6 months

Around 9 months

About a 12 months

18 months or a year and a half

I have a dinosaur of a phone — more than 2 years

My personal experience is a little off since I have 4 phones — E51, E71, 5800, iPhone 3G — which does not include the ones given to me. Normally, I would have just 2 or 3 to service both public, business and private numbers. All 4 phones were bought in a span of less than 6 months but the motivation there was more for review on this blog so they don’t count.

Please share your thoughts on the comments below and send me your vote/feedback on the poll.

A lot of middle to high-end phones being sold nowadays come with GPS and/or A-GPS support and I wondered if people really use them at all.

Our poll this time is for phone users — if they use the built-in GPS in their phones. Most of my experience with using GPS is while driving to places I’m not familiar with. Instead of the physical maps (I have one of those EazyMaps), I often Google Maps and GPS to give me some sense of direction.

How about you? Is the GPS in your phone an unused feature or have you found some good use for it? Let me know by leaving a comment and adding your vote in the poll section.

I was watching the new TV series (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) on my MSI Wind and was trying out several video players I installed earlier just to check which one will efficiently play them.

Was wondering what do others use to play their videos, hence the poll. There aren’t much of them today that I can think of. Back in the 90’s, Xing MPEG Player was a personal favorite. How about now?

Which video player do you often use?

Windows Media Player

DivX

VLC

Real Player

iTunes/QuickTime

PowerDVD

WinAmp

WinDVD

Media Player Classic

Please do send your feedback on our poll section on the right sidebar or leave a comment here.

I’m also particularly interested to know which one has the smallest footprint (in terms of memory or CPU usage) as well as the most efficient especially when used on netbooks.

The latest AdMob report for August shows strong growth in mobile web traffic for the Philippines. This is partly pushed by the iPhone 3G. Our next poll asks how much people spend on mobile 3G every month.

Our latest survey on Mobile 3G Usage indicates more than half are using their 3G phone to go online compared to tethering or using 3G USB dongles.

For this survey, we’ll look into the average monthly spending for 3G connection and here are the options:

You don’t use mobile 3G.

Less than Php100 per month

Between Php100 to Php500 per month

From Php500 to Php999 per month

From Php1,000 to Php2,000 per month

More than Php2,000 per month

Some older accounts on Globe Visibility has that unlimited usage plan at Php2,000 (the promo price) and Php3,000 (regular price). There are also people in the WeRoam plan (Php1,999 for unlimited) as well as that Smart Bro Unlimited plan (came out first week only) for Php999. Sun Cellular is also offering unlimited mobile broadband for as low as Php999 a month.

Please go and send in your feedback to our Poll section in the sidebar.

Please go to our poll section on the side bar and take your pick from the ff. 3G services:

Smart Mobile 3G (via my 3G Phone)

SmartBro Plugit! Postpaid

SmartBro Plugit! Prepaid

PLDT WeRoam

Globe Visibility

Globe 3G Per KB

Globe 3G Per Minute

umobile 3G

Sun Cellular 3G

I’ve already included umobile 3G even if there are only a couple thousand users nationwide as well as the still-to-be-launched Sun Cellular 3G.

Come to think of it, PLDT WeRoam and SmartBro Mobile 3G are practically competing products by the same telco. My guess is one of them will soon be phased out.

Asus is no longer the only player in the UMPC niche but it has successfully manage to grab the most exposure — all the rest becomes just another “Asus EeePC-killer”.

I’ve listed down 7 of them in our new poll for the week:

Some of the prices have gone down since we first covered them here. Likewise, Asus is set to launch the Eee PC 1000 this month but it’s not final yet. Send us your vote in the Polls section.

According to our recent poll on antivirus, AVG came on top of the heap followed by Nod32 and Avast. From over 220 respondents, AVG was actively used by just over 25%. See chart after the jump.

Surprisingly, the Slovak-developed antivirus Nod32 came in second with close to 16%. First time I heard and tried this software was back in December in Germany when a Honduran delegate shared it with me (in Spanish version).

Avast came in 3rd. All of the the top 3 anti-virus offers a free version so it’s not a surprise they’re the most widely used.

Eight (8) of the total respondents shared they did not need any anti-virus (OSX/Linux maybe?) while 19 added they were using a different kind of anti-virus software.

Last month, I upgraded my old desktop PC. I have been a longtime AMD fan and for the last 5 years or so, have used almost all of their CPUs — Athlon, Sempron, AMD64+, and the X2. Even most of the dedicated servers I get runs AMD Opteron CPUs. They’re cheaper and does the job just fine.

However, during my latest upgrade, I switched to the other side — an Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz. I actually got the works — 4GB DDR2 800 RAM, Inno3D 8600 GTS 256MB DDR3 and a Gigabyte 3D Aurora.

The switch was prompted with the realization that at the top of the food chain, it looks like Intel has taken back the lead for some time now. In the lower end CPUs, AMD is may be seem neck and neck with Intel — Athlon 64 X2s vs. Intel Intel E4×00 C2D — but go up in the quad cores and you’ll see Intel becomes cheaper.

Has AMD lost the battle altogether? Has their “cheap but fast” brand label been diluted?

Our poll for this week will look into you CPU preferences — What’s inside your rig, Intel or AMD? For good measure, I also added in the poll IBM’s PowerPC (those running pre-Intel Macs) and Via processors.

As reflected in the global market, Nokia dominates the pack in our recent survey on mobile phones. The results of the poll were really interesting although it was pretty obvious from the start who would win.

There were a total of about 179 people who sent in 199 votes in their poll answers. I realized people now are actually using more than one mobile phone — 11% of the respondents indicated they use at least 2 phones at the same time.

Here’s the breakdown of the poll results:

Nokia – 44.7%
Sony Ericsson – 26.1%
Motorola – 9.0%
Samsung – 6.5%
LG – 2.5%
Apple iPhone – 2.5%
Blackberry – 2%
Palm – 1%
HTC/Dopod – 1%
Panasonic – 1%
Verzio – 0.5%
Others – 3%

Of those who indicated they use more than one cellphone, 8 out of every 10 uses a Nokia phone while 4 out of 10 says they use Sony Ericsson. The most commonly paired phones are Nokia and Sony Ericsson at 40% rate of incidence.

Overall, Nokia took the lead with 9 out of every 20 mobile users, followed by Sony Ericsson at about 5 out of every 20. Motorola took the 3rd spot at 9% and Samsung at #4 with 6.5%.

Anybody here still remembers that ThunderByte antivirus from late 90s? It was one of the most powerful of the batch back then because it had heuristic features that can identify and cure even unknown viruses. Our poll for the week is to survey which anti-virus programs people are using nowadays.

On top of my head, I can easily point to AVG, Avast, Nod32, Kaspersky, F-Secure. And then, the more popular commercial ones like Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin and Sophos.

So which one of these you got installed and running on your PC. Please go ahead to the Polls section to submit your feedback.
