Interesting Stats from YugaTech iPhone App

For about 2 and a half months now, we’ve had the YugaTech iPhone App as a dedicated reader for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. I’d like to share some insights on the stats we’ve gathered from over 600 active users.

From just over 600+ YugaTech iPhone App users, close to 60% are coming from the Philippines followed by United States (14.43%), Australia (5.14%) and Singapore (3.81%).

As for the type of devices used, for the longest time it was the iPhone 3G that led the pack until this month when the iPhone 3GS took the lead at 28.24%. There’s a 6 to 4 ratio between iPhone and iPod Touch users.

The most interesting to me actually is the number of jailbroken devices — the 30% has been pretty consistent even from the start so it looks like one in every 3 iPhone users jailbreak their devices.

The 2009 YugaTech Traffic Stats Report

Exactly a year ago today, just before the year 2008 ended, I posted the blog’s traffic stats as a sort of reminder to myself and to set higher goals for 2009. In the same tradition, I’m posting my 2009 traffic stats report hours before the New Year.

This year, all expectations were exceeded as the blog hit over 6 million pageviews (6,298,815 to be exact) from 3.48 million visits (over 2.5 million absolute unique visitors). That’s a a 133% growth in traffic alone. Time spent on site went a few seconds longer at 2:15 with 73% of the visitors discovering YugaTech for the first time.

As for RSS readership, numbers grew from 4,900 subscribers last year to 16,600 this year — a 239% growth in subscriber base.

This year, we also introduced the YugaTech iPhone App and in the last 35 days on the iTunes App Store, it has been actively used in more than 330 iPhone/iPod Touch devices. I’m hoping to bump that number to at least 3,000 by end of next year.

The gadget reviews continue to be the biggest crowd drawer for the blog. Here are the top 10 gadget reviews for 2009:

I hope that I’d be able to continue this growth in 2010. My personal goal is 1 million pageviews a month. *hehe*

Our Biggest Tech Stories of 2009

Looking back in the last 12 months, we’ve seen quite a number of exciting developments and news that we broke here on YugaTech. Let’s do a quick run down here before the year ends.

The year didn’t start out well and we’ve seen a series of job cuts in the IT sector.

Accenture Manila cuts hundreds of jobs as a result of the US recession. At least 500 people lost their jobs in one day and many hundreds more followed in the succeeding months. Epixtar Philippines closes down leaving 650 people jobless. KGB Philippines laid off 600+ agents. Dozens of other companies closed down or downsized their operations. It’s one of the biggest tsunamis to hit the IT industry in the Philippines.

Intel officially disclosed it will close its manufacturing plants in the Philippines (located at Genereal Trias, Cavite) along with several other plants in Malaysia, Oregon and California.

Top Philippine news site, Inquirer.net, downsizing and folding back to mother company PDI. A number of its key employees are now with Yahoo! Philippines and several marketing people now working at Sulit.com.ph.

Globe launches commercial WiMax in the Philippines. Cignal offers digital TV to the market. These two are on my wish list for 2009 and they finally came true!

The biggest gadget magazine, T3 Magazine Philippines, officially shuts down. Summit Media re-invents the publication to a promising online venture now called Techie.com.ph.

Sulit.com.ph gets sold to a global investor. We’re not sure what percentage of the new company, Netrepreneur Connections Enterprises Inc., is still owned by the founders but what we know is that they’ve incorporated early this year and finally moved to a nice office in Makati.

Yehey almost got sold. A company executive even flew to Hong Kong to talk to Havas Media for a round of investment or a buy-out but that didn’t push thru. The Philippine portal has since re-launched and went back to becoming what it used to be a decade ago — a search engine (possibly using Yahoo! BOSS).

Chikka sold to Smart. The two have been in talks for like an eternity and Chikka execs finally broke the news on Twitter. No official purchase price but speculations put it north of 1B.

Windows 7 is launched in the Philippines. This is my most anticipated product of the year.

Friendster gets bought by MOL AccessPortal Berhad, weeks after re-launching the site with a new design. Estimates go up to $110 Million and the Malaysian buyer is looking to monetize the social network thru virtual goods (similar to what Zynga does in Facebook).

What to read at the PC Labs

Giving Free Ad Spots to Charity

This has been a long time in the concept stage and I have also been doing privately for some time now. This blog is giving free premium ad spots to charitable foundations and non-profit causes. The ad spots will rotate along with the paid advertisers and will fill up all remnant inventory for the rest of the year.

I thought that if I’m expecting around 6 million page views this year, I might as well send the remaining traffic as some sort of donation to sites of charities and other non-profit institutions. Compared to a single blog post that gets buried, a banner ad will show up everyday for the entire year (more exposure).

The first recipient for this project is the World Vision Development Foundation, Inc., a relief and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities worldwide.

If you’re a member of a charitable foundation or a non-profit organization and wants to get some exposure for the rest of the year, send me an email. Here are some basic requirements:

1) Preferably a registered non-profit organization with a base in the Philippines.

2) Must have a fully functioning website, blog or Twitter account.

3) Banner ads should be in GIF/JPG or SWF. Flash banners should support clickTag. Ad sizes should adhere to IAB standards (468×60, 300×250).

All remnant or unsold ad spaces on this blog will be allocated evenly to all free ad spots for the entire year. I cannot guarantee how much exposure that will be but based on my current stats and ad inventories, it could be somewhere between 1 million to 3 million ad impressions for the rest of 2009.

The 2008 Blog Traffic Stats

It has been a great year on YugaTech and I saw steady growth in traffic, subscribers and advertisers on the blog for the whole of 2008. Here’s hoping I’d be able to do the same if not better effort this 2009.

For the whole year of 2008, the blog attracted close to 1.2 Million absolute unique visitors and generating 2.7 Million pageviews with an average time spent of 2:06 minutes on the blog. That’s a 200% growth in visitors and 214% in pageviews compared to 2007.

Of the lot, 21% of the visitors are returning and 79% are new ones with 62% of the readership from the Philippines. RSS subscribers hover around 4,900 and though I can’t remember what the number was 12 months ago, I’m pretty sure it was more than double. It could have been higher had I not lost about 1,200 subscribers when I migrated to Google from Feedburner.

(Updated) Since some of you asked, revenues from this blog has more than doubled from last year. Income from AdSense had a 12% increase despite a 45% drop in CTR. The lower CTR was due to additional banner ad placements. The biggest improvement is in direct ad sales — we booked over a dozen corporate sponsors which added 118% more from the AdSense revenues. That makes direct advertising on this blog as the main source of income.

My largest traffic referrers this year were from forums like PhilMug, TipidPC, EeePH and PinoyExchange. This is mostly due to my gadget coverage and reviews.

2008 was a great year for this blog and I have to partly thank my readers and sponsors for that. I hope 2009 will present itself as a much better year. Happy New Year to all!

Do you make local backups of your blog?

Just this evening, the server that this blog is on had a weird hardware failure. It just froze and the blog was inaccessible. The rest that followed was some sort of reality check and yet another lesson in making backups of backups.

I sent a request to the data center techs to do a hard reboot from their end. After the first reboot, the server would not respond as if it was hanging or something. A second hard reboot made it respond and I was able to login to SSH and restarted all services (Apache, mySQL, Bind).

However, the websites are still not running despite the fact that apache and mysql were fine. I was watching the processes and there were no instances of any HTTP which I initially thought was broken or the configurations went bonkers.

After an hour of checking, viewing config files and restarting services, the problem still remained. While looking at the list of accounts, I discovered some of the accounts had zero disk usage as though they don’t have anything stored in them. I realized several of the domain accounts were on the secondary drive and that drive is practically missing or was not loaded by the system.

I already expected the worst while praying for the best — the server could have suffered an irrecoverable hard drive failure. I immediately checked for the internal backups and found out that not all accounts had the latest copy. This blog specifically did not have a complete backup. Apparently, the huge account size (2.6GB) prevented the automated backup service to complete the daily backups. Same thing with the weekly backup.

I still have the monthly backups and I could start from there but that would mean that I’ll lose several weeks of entries or at most about a month.

I ran some tests and fixes on the missing drive. Luckily, another graceful reboot was all I needed for the system to detect the missing drive and load it. All that checking and diagnosis as well as coordinating with the DC engineers took me over 2 hours to finally resolve. This was fairly quick compared to other problems before where it’s usually taken some 4 to 6 hours (and there was a time about 48 hours due to a drive replacement and an OS reload).

It reminded me that despite the multiple automated backups, one should also consider regular local backups.

For WordPress blogs, this would mean downloading the Themes and Plugins folder, the Uploads inside WP-Content and a full DB backup (there’s a plugin for this one) and download. Doing this once every week-end should do as well as downloading your daily posts using feedreader clients such as FeedDemon might spare you some headache when the time comes your backups fail on you.

I completely forgot about this but I hope I’m not too late to publicly thank Asia Century for featuring YugaTech in their affiliate network.

I’ve personally met Anders of Asia Century a couple of times and he graciously offered me the free publicity in his network. Same goes to his team who did the extra effort of doing the banner ads. It sure did brought in tens of thousands of traffic.

I’ve been running their Affiliate Program for months now (I think I’m actually the first one to beta test it) and it’s been getting me some extra revenue. It’s not much compared to the other programs I’ve used but the few thousand bucks was worth the effort.

Asia Century offers country-specific affiliate programs so you can actually maximize your Philippine traffic. Here are some major points I’d like to focus on:

All affiliate programs are specific to the Philippines so you get better conversions because it’s targeted.
Most affiliate campaigns are in a form of a contest or giveaways. This is also a click-magnet and further increases conversion rate. Each conversion earns you only Php2.00 but because they have multiple campaigns (more than 10 at a time), you get multiple conversions per visitor. That means a single visitor in your website can potentially earn you Php20 or more.
No limitations on promoting the affiliate campaigns. While other programs such as AdSense prohibits you from promoting the ads, Asia Century allows you to pimp your ads as much as you can. Thus, you can tell your readers to join in the campaigns that offer prizes and stuff.
It’s platform agnostic. That means you can use their campaigns on any website or electronic medium — via email, forums, blogs, social networking sites, groups/lists, RSS, etc. As long as you can convert, you get to earn.
They offer pay-per-click campaigns too.

Migrated Feedburner to Google: New Feed URL

Just got an email that my Feedburner account has been migrated over to a Google account. And thus, this blog will also have a new feed URL: http://feedproxy.google.com/yugatech.

The old Feedburner RSS will no longer work (the native WordPress RSS/ATom feeds do) but RSS to email subscribers will still get updates to their Inbox as usual. I’ve update the links and the rss meta to reflect this change.

Results: Reader Demographic Survey

First, thanks to everyone who join our mini-survey. The numbers are in and I’d like to share with everyone the results. This is the first time I had something like this and results were pretty interesting.

First up is the age group. Lets me know how young or old are my regular readers here:

Turns out, 70% of the readers here are between 18 to 34 years old. Next, how are the male and female readers been split?

As expected, the males dominate the readership with 17 out of every 20 readers being males and 3 out of every 20 are females. Next up are the locations. Though I have that data based from Google Analytics, those are totals and do not distinguish one-time or casual visitors from regular readers.

Again, the Philippines overwhelmingly dominate the group with 88% of the readers based locally. All the rest are coming from US, Europe, Middle East and Asia-Pacific. Next up is their work status:

The blog is attracting a fairly mature crowd with half of the readers going on full-time employment and 25% are self-employed. Lastly, I also asked for their annual income.

The group is composed of largely high-income earners, with close to 40% having an annual income in excess of Php500k. Very interesting numbers indeed.

Adding Paged Comments

Those regularly commenting on this blog may have noticed that I’ve added the Paged Comments plugin recently.

I don’t really liked flipping thru pages of comments while reading but some older posts here have had hundreds (a few have over 1,000) of comments which taking forever to load on a single page view.

This resulted to two problems — page time outs/DB connection errors and the SE bots refused to come back and crawl the pages. I’ve tried many times to either tweak Apache and mySQL configs, prune the comments, put them in a static/archived page or ignore the problem altogether. For many, it’s “happy problem” to have tons of comments, but it has these unfortunate drawbacks.

For the meantime, the paged comments plugin has solved the more important DB connection error issue which will allow new visitors to those pages to add comments again.

New Year, New Server

Just got hold of a new server. Bought this last January 1, 2008 for good luck and better times ahead. That means I’m moving this blog again this week.

The last server we had was put online some 6 months ago and I thought it’s time to get a new one. With the additional blogs that have been added to the stable, we’ve outgrown the old one fairly quick.

With Guitar Tutee and Blog ni Inday packing in an additional 20,000 pageviews a day plus several new blogs we’ve yet to formally launch this month, it’s better to be ready.

Besides, I like tweaking new servers and optimizing stuff here and there. I also love bargain hunting and the Dual Xeon 3.4GHz with 4GB of RAM was too good to pass up.

As usual, you might encounter some errors, de javu, or missing comments while we move all the sites over to the new server. Just a heads up.

YugaTech Recap for the Year 2007

A number of bloggers have published a year-ender recap of what had transpired in the Philippine blogosphere for the year 2007. I will not repeat what they’ve posted as I think they make a better summary than I do. I’ll just do my own recap of the year.

And when I mean recap, it’s just a really quick and short summary of what has transpired in my own little corner of the webosphere:

Spearheaded two (of the many) major blog-related events for 2007 — Blog Parteeh! and the Philippine Blog Awards. We were planning to have two more but the stress and the controversies we’re overwhelming I thought 2 was one more than I could muster in such a public arena.
Had my very first junket as a blogger, thanks to Nokia for inviting me to the Nokia: Go Play event in Singapore. First time to really witness a media junket. Oh, the one with Sen. Kiko Pangilinan’s Caravan during the election campaign was also an eye-opener.
And don’t get me started with that TV feature on Mel & Joey. It was both a blessing and a curse. I had to get me a separate phone and private number so I can live in peace. IMO, my guesting on ANC with Manolo’s The Explainer was way more interesting.
Another round of globe-trotting — from Singapore, to Penang, Malaysia, then Lahore and Karachi in Pakistan and lastly to Cologne and Dresden, Germany. These were all a mix of fun, gut-wrenching and traumatic experiences (the airport ordeals).
We finally launched the BBN (Bayanihan Blog Network) with Connie, Sasha, Rico and AnP. BBN is an independent, all-Filipino new media network.
Made my very first sale of a website. Wasn’t much but t’was in the six figures. Had other offers for other blogs. They were irresistible offers but I declined.
I was invited to join a new start-up company, IMV Solutions, the group behind the SEMCON. Thanks to partners Marc Macalua, Anton Shekker and Norelyn Babiera. This is my 3rd SEC-registered company. Had my very first one when I was 25.
I had over 20 talks and seminars. If you count it by the days, it’s actually more. So that’s around 2 talks per month. Incidentally, doing talks has also become a major source of income for me this year. And I still have that Ilonggo twang.
My endorsement deal with Auction.PH also made my year. T’was surreal.
Lastly, surviving a libel case. Actually, I have another one right now (again!).

I thought 2007 was the longest blogging year ever, at least for me. Hope the 2008 presents a better one.

Didn’t notice this until today but this blog has actually broken 2,000 posts and 25,000 comments. That’s for 2 years and 8 months that this blog has last been relaunched. That comes down to a little over 2 posts per day and 26 comments per day. Here’s to the next thousand! *heh*
