I overheard this last Saturday from a computer technician when we were visiting a dentist who had their PC fixed. The guy mentioned that defective RAM modules can still be sold to a couple hundred bucks. He claimed that a friend of his has been doing this a lot in one of the local tech forums (tipidpc.com).
Although I was a bit intrigued with what he said, I didn’t butt in to ask some additional questions. While I think this is true, are memory sticks being recycled much like your ordinary printer ink catridges? I’m not really sure how they go about making money out of it. Maybe they fix it and sell it back sa refurbished items or take out the pieces (those chips sticking out of the RAM sticks)?
Actually I have about a dozne memory chips lying around. Some of them are very old PC100/133 chips while others are newer PC 2700 DDR SDRAMs but are already defective (I guess). I went and checked TipidPC but found no thread discussing this. I know there’s trading, buying and selling going on in there but with defectives ones, haven’t heard of it except maybe HDDs?
Most of whatever you say happens to be supprisingly accurate and that makes me ponder why I hadn’t looked at this with this light before. This particular piece truly did switch the light on for me personally as far as this particular topic goes.
