A new Thai-based satellite broadband provider, IPStar, is now offering broadband internet anywhere in the Philippines for as low as $49 a month.

Last Thursday, IPStar revealed their commercial offering for satellite internet with starting packages (IPSTAR BigSky) as affordable as $49/month (Php2,500). Higher plans are available for bigger bandwidth.

The Phillipine gateway of IPSTAR is located at Angeles Industrial Park, Pampanga as seen on the photos above.

Downstream speeds are estimated to reach 8Mbps with upstream speed of 4Mbps. Not sure how much that one would cost you. See more info about them here.

isa kami sa subscriber ng ipstar… ito nung august 2010 ng ikinabit ng contractor ang connection ay ang lakas pa nang connection ilang minuto lang tapos na ang download at saka yung mga projects research nang mga studyanti dali lang ma download at tapos na agad pagkatapos nang ilang buwan mga bandang october 2010 medu humihina ang connection lalo na ng january 2011 parang ood na naglalakad na ang connection.. .start ka nang umaga hanggang hapon minsan di pa matapos nakoooo…. bat ganoon ang connection ng ipstar… parang hindi kami contento sa srvisyo nyo taga ipstar… kung totousin tapos na magbayad nito ang DepEd sa Ipstar…. kaya kung pd pake check naman Ipstar…….. thanks

Hello sir Lito, the connection (plan) that you’re probably have come from the Retail pipeline. Ang alam ko po nakahiwalay ang pipeline ng DEPED school sa retail plan. If you’re having a retail connection and you’ve said that bandwidth should be 3Mbps (it’s a burstible SHARED bandwidth), kung dedicated bandwidth naman yung 3Mbps sobrang mahal na po yun and used mostly sa corporate.

Hi everyone…i’m from nueva vizcaya and we have a VSAT intalled here its from IPSTAR also…i think we a common problem with romel regarding connection at peek hours…palaging n puputol ung connection…sabi nung contractor nmin that because of heavy downloading and facebook users since wla nman msyadong users, because teachers attending their class during daytime…and iilan lang ang mga users dito s school nmain… nauubos daw ung bandwidth namin? bandwidth namin daw is 3mbps….is that possible? I dont have idea kung magkno monthly fees namin….pls. need explanation…thnx in advance…

Please send me a quotation for 8Mbps downstream with 4Mbps upstream connection as well as the 4Mbps downstream with 2Mbps upstream connection for a three (3) years contract, asap. Including the modems, a 2 diameter satellite disc and a 6 diameter sat disc for our main site.

Question: Do you have a installed based client with a station in Manila and a station somewhere in a remote site like in Luzon, Visayas or mindanao area for me to conduct huge data transfer test, etc.

Nanflexal or to anyone

Can you give me some information on this base station and relay? My Fiance is in a partially remote area in Bukidnon. She has a decent signal most of the time with smartbro. However, in the evening close the doors and windows and inside there is noting. Is there a way to boost or relay the signal from outside to inside the house, thanks

Gidday, I call Siargao daily from Australia on Skype, send emails with attachments and receive them, plus my partner calls me. In really heavy downpours there are issues, but then I find that it is the same regarding weather with Globe and Smart in Cebu when I am there. My partner is presently in Surigao City, and anyone who thinks they are going to rely on Smart or Globe to do any serious business is in for a rude shock. The service is well past saturation point, and is incredibly slow, plus dropouts are continual. It may appear cheaper but try downloading, or worse uploading and you will spend a fortune, get no where and waste an incredible amount of time. Do a genuine speedtest on Smart and Globe, its not remotely what is claimed. As for customer service, they’ve never heard of it. Thats just my experience over a few years, and why I am so happy with Ipstar.

satellite dish and aperture is very expensive plus installation charge and latency issue.

I would rather wait for reliable backhaul before building our WISP but i hope smart BRO can give us reliable connection since their tower is 500 meters away from my propose base station in matnog.

its not true the connection of ipstar is not stable espcially during rainy days, and also during pick hour your connection is to slow because it shared connection only

we’re planning to build WISP in bon-ot big matnog sorsogon but the lack of telecommunication infrastracture is our major concern.

IPSTAR charge us 95k these cover the entire service but im worry about the latency issue so our best choice is Smart BRO and setup a Base Station in matnog which Smart tower are located. as you know, Smart BRO is now 2 Mbps standard plan so i’m planning to get (4) 2 Mbps from Smart send the signal to Bon-ot via 3 Towers. this will be done by Wireless outdoor radio.

Gidday Harold, mine was over a year ago, and was a bit cheaper, mainly due to me selecting the Siver Plan, 512/128kbps. The equipment and installation fees were the same as you. Although, when I got mine the exange rate for Aussie was around 28phps!I had 4 other quotes, from other providers, which were much dearer, up to $12,000USD, and the other monthly service fees were way, way higher, over double being the cheapest. Plus the other dishes were huge, making installation a hassle. I really needed the net, so was stoked to have found Ipstar, which is also digital. None of the other providers was local, so that posed issues as well. I scoured Cebu, and everyone told me I couldn’t get satellite. I had extensive talks with Smart and Globe who had no plans to upgrade in the foreseeable future. I use Smartbro in when travelling to Surigao and Cebu. Cebu is okay speedwise, but Surigao can get pretty congested and slow. Like I said, brownouts hinder Ipstar, and radical weather does too. However even at my speed its great, as good as the Bigpond I am using now in Australia to send this. Got uyour email, all the best, Mike.

Yesterday, I just received the price quotation from WIT (Philsat), however, the initial cash outlay is extremely high. I was wondering if you have paid similar amount when they installed your satellite connection? Here are the details.

II. Speed: 1Mbps downstream/500kbps upstream
III. Monthly Service Fee: 1,995pesos
IV. One-Time Charge
a. Equipment charge: 50,000pesos
b. Gateway Fee: 10,000pesos
c. Installation Charge for Mindanao: 25,000pesos
SUB-TOTAL: 85,000pesos
VAT (12%): 10,200pesos
GRAND TOTAL: 95,200pesos

I would appreciate very if you could comment on the initial cost so that I can get an idea to negotiate the cost further down.

Hi, I use Ipstar in a remote part of Mindanao. I use the 2,500 plan and it is genuine 512, around 128 upload. There is no other broadband there, despite people trying to use Smartbro and Globe Visibility, which basically wont work, and cost heaps of time and money to try and persevere with. It does cost a bit to set up, roughly 55,000php for my remote area. It works well in pretty bad weather, rain, wind is no problem, unless its a total deluge. Brownouts effect it as the modem is powered. Overall I am really pleased, the speed is as good as I am used to in regional Australia. I can use all features of skype, with video, watch video, Youtube etc. The upload is not bad, I can send photos, documents etc, although at that speed, obviously it takes time if uploading a lot. Say, 10 photos at a time is pretty easy. As far as service goes, Ipstar try very hard, and the staff are very polite to deal with. No internet is foolproof, even in Australia I have experienced weeks offline with big providers, and service can be a headache. Because of my isolation in the Philippines it can be frustrating if things play up, but they have always honored their agreement. At no charge they have replaced a modem, and a part on my dish, sending service people out as promptly as is possible in view of the regions accessibility. Also my lack of expertise in that part of computing can be an issue, as sometimes simple things that are easily fixed over the phone once its figured out, can be frustrating. The cost is not an issue to me in the way that I really needed the internet, and am stoked to have it. I got quotes for 4 and 5 times this much, with analogue systems and huge, inconvenient dishes, which are prone to drop outs in rain. Until I stumbled on Ipstar, which is digital and miles cheaper than anything else I looked at, especially monthly fees, I reluctantly began to figure it was a no go here. I hope this doesn’t come across as a suck up, but its just my experience, and I am grateful for being able to get good broadband on a remote island. Hope this answers some questions.

the internet satelite connection is the same like satelie TV, and your satisfacion will be dependable on the weather like rain which is very common in the philippines, so hardly pray for the good weather while you`re on line. I did have already that service with very bad connection : signal is cutting,losing all programs . No! thanks for that pleasure. (may be you wll be more lucky try it)..

I’ve been into internet satellite business since 1997 i sell different services and platform from hughes iDirect, viasat Linkstar to gilat system, 8mbps downlink and 4 mbps upstream for 49$ is a load of BS, it is a misleading advertisement, you can only and truly get an 8mbps downlink if your terminal is an scpc capable and sucbscribed to an scpc service.

I’m very much interested with the P2.5k service even if it will be just 512kbps (i hope not at 384 though). Municipalities with no broadband service could benefit from this. When i am in our province, i spend more or less that amount on GPRS speed! I have seen this thing in action. This service has already been installed in our town but only for the use of the LGU. i have already seen the sat dish, it has an ipstar logo on the dish.

@cris, I don’t think the starting fee of Php2,500 is for 8Mbps. I’m thinking more like 384 or 512Kbps.

From the link provided, the agents are listed as TNRI, AIGS and WIT. I wonder what levels of support they will provide for this service…
Also would like to know what is the customer premise equipment (CPE) and under what terms will the subscriber be using it (e.g. do we have to buy it?).
Of course I should just call the agents – am just worried I’ll end up talking to someone who doesn’t know enough about the service…

Although the the 8/4 Mbps bandwidth is nice, I am wondering about the latency. Satellite communications normally has a higher than average latency as compared to other broadband such as DSL or Cable.
