Search for Best Local Government Website

Listen to article

Just got a letter from the Director of the NCC (National Computer Center) inviting me to be one of the panel of judges for the 2006 Search for Best Local Government Website as part of NCC’s eLGU Project.

I didn’t know there was something like this going on but with a quick search I found their website here.

The contest, which officially started last July 24, 2006 with the call for submission of entries is aimed at encouraging LGUs to establish and maintain an official site in the World Wide Web. It is also meant to inspire other LGUs to continue to enhance their sites and improve the delivery of online services to the public.

I guess this is one way to promote and motivate local government offices to have their online presence make known to their constituents. How about a blog then? *heh*

Oh wait, the letter also mentioned that this project is in partnership with the Asian Institue of Journalism and Communication adn the Philippine Web Awards. Hmmm, I wonder if this is part of the Webby’s category on e-Governance. Maybe a special award of sorts? We’ll soon find out.

Hi Abe! I found this entry of yours and just would like to reply to the comments. I’m a hobby web designer. I designed a government website. Last year, I asked one of the local officers in our town for some info that I needed for my own site as I originally thought, but he requested me if we could use a .gov.ph instead of using my own domain. I said, why not.

It was a volunteer work. I was not paid for the web design, for pictures, and not even being paid for maintaining it. I even pay for the webhosting until now.

Since I know that I’m not going to earn from web designing it, I especially asked the person concerned if I could put some ads (Adsense) at the site, maybe it could help me to pay for webhosting. I’m not really aggresive in advertising as web designing is just my hobby, and I don’t really mind if I didn’t get any from designing the site coz I know that I’m at least doing a favor for my town mates, and yet others complain.

Ok, I wrote a long intro, actually a backgrounder, coz I’m somehow guilty of the ads that they’re saying here. It’s not helping me at all. If my husband asks me about the ads, (not the only ads I have, I have other ads in my other sites) he would really laugh everytime I tell him how much I earned. We both would laugh at it. I think I put those ads with the other ads at the other sites, April last year, and I only got my first US$100 just 2 months ago, June 2006. That’s probably a lot of money there in the Philippines, but for more than a year, earning like that, not at all enough. Take note, that’s not only from the LGU website, but from my own sites as well. There’s probably around 7 or 8 sites that I have ads. I just added the Text Link Ads last night but not at the LGU site.

So you see, I do not earn big bucks from ads like the others.

A lot won’t really understand it because they didn’t think there are still people out there who would work like that without any remuneration. But my townmates know… but not all. :)

@2 and 4

Is that (ad words, text links) a good or a bad thing?
