Accessing GMail via POP

I’ve already consolidated all my email accounts into GMail and while I only need one login to access all emails, it’s always full of new ones and I end up not being able to answer all of them in a timely manner. This gets worse if I’m away on a trip as I don’t get to go online as often as I want.

So, I realized that during the times when I don’t have access but just hanging around on the airport or on the plane, I could have rummaged thru the emails, answer them, save as draft and send them all off whenever I get the chance to be online. That’s where POP email makes real sense.

Here are the settings if anyone wants to try it:

In GMail, go to Mail Settings -> Forwarding & POP -> Enable POP for all mail

Server Settings

Username: [email protected]
Server Name: pop.gmail.com
Port: 995
Security Settings: SSL

Outgoing SMTP: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 587
Security Authentication: TLS

Problem though is that I could set the client to leave messages in GMail. The Email Troubleshooter indicates one should have to download the emails in order for it to work properly. Hope I don’t regret downloading all of them 1.1GB of emails later on.

I got it working so that I still have copies of the email in my GMail after I download them in ThunderBird. Looks like my slow connection was the reason why it was conking out the first time.

another thing that I like best when using POP for gmail compared to others is that it eliminates too much advertisements that clutter the email message. :)

Keep your messages on the server!!!!

I use Thunderbird to access all my mail. I leave the messages on the server and I don’t have any problems.

I access my Gmail account in 3 ways: via web browser (Firefox), via email client (Thunderbird) and via Pocket PC. When I download new messages, the original copies are kept unread on the account.

It seems Gmail has support for offline access if you have google desktop installed.

And I think pretty soon Gmail will support Offline access thru google gears just like google reader.

I think you mean thunderbird, instead of firefox 1.5. Anyway, for me I’ve even set up another account as my outgoing mail account, separate from my incoming gmail account. I just made the outgoing mail account to forward messages to my incoming gmail account so I’ll receive them all messages.

Hi Abe – You can indeed set G-Mail in a way that even though you download the e-mails, copies are also left on your G-Mail account. That is how I have mine set up. So, although I use POP3 to download all my G-Mails, they are also available through webmail online as well.
