Smart Padyak: Wifi on Wheels

Listen to article

Inq7.net reports that Smart Communications has been using pedicabs to bring wireless broadband to areas in the Philippines that still has no internet:

In lieu of passengers, the sidecars of specially equipped pedicabs instead carry a desktop computer and a wireless antenna that connects to the cellular network of telecom firm Smart Communications.

Smart runs a fixed wireless Internet service, called Smart Bro, on it cellular network.

The computers, however, must still be connected to regular power outlet to function, Ramon Isberto, Smart public affairs head, said.

He said that the experiment, called “Smart Padyak” (Smart Pedaling) is underway in Cebu and some parts of Metro Manila.

Looks like is more aggressive in widening their coverage rather than saving the degrading coverage they currently have.

Ever heard of Smart Click? Its a complete internet cafe/computer center in a container van franchised by Smart. We have one here in our place – Aurora province. I heard that there are now 5 of these in Luzon. It uses the Smart wifi/bro service to connect to the internet.

For a moment I thought the PCs would be pedal-powered. It might work if those were laptops.
