Mozilla has been hyping today as Firefox 3 “Download Day” in order to set the Guinness World Record for the most downloads in 24 hours. Everybody’s talking about it, bloggers are blogging about it but when the time came (around 1:00am MST), the Mozilla website went kaput!
Great PR waiting for a disaster. Download sites are down or not loading on the first couple of hours od D-Day — getfirefox.com, firefox.com, mozilla.org can’t be accessed.
Over 1.5 million users have pledged to download the Firefox 3 browser on D-Day. They practically asked for a DDOS and did not prepare for it.
After about 2 or so hours, I was able to access the Mozilla site and downloaded a copy of FF3 final release.
Go and download you own copy of FF3 here and be part of a world record. Hopefully, the links are still up before the 24-hour deadline ends. (If you’re already on a beta version of FF3, don’t use the Update feature. Go directly to the site and click on the download link to be counted.)

I knew it was going to happen. It’s a good thing I went to bed early instead of staying up and waiting for the 1am “opening.”
Woke up at around 6am, accessed Mozilla just fine and right now, I’m using Firefox 3.
Buddy – the download area should be at – http://www.spreadfirefox.com. It was alright at 1.00 am UTC and I managed to download mine without much problem.
It’s a great browser though. Love it.
[...] That was some 6 hours ago and right now I’m running Firefox 3 and officially part of that world record – for geeks. I sure am glad I did not wait up until 1am earlier for Firefox 3 to be officially available for download because one; I was really wrestling against my tired-from-school, skinny-ass body who has taken sides with the Sandman, in his futile attempt to prevent me from becoming part of that awesome world record – for geeks, and second; I had a feeling that once Firefox 3 does become available for download, those 1 Million-strong fans who pledged to join the quest for that world record download – for geeks, the Mozilla servers would be swamped DDoS-style. And it did, as Yuga puts it succinctly, Firefox 3 Download Day goes kaput!. [...]

I didn’t have to download mine (the whole version I mean). Been using RC as my main browser ever since RC 1 came out. Automatic update was a cinch.
Im excited to the mobile version release!
Firefox offers simplicity and the best usability.

Downloaded mine this morning, around 7:30 am. Didn’t encounter any problems.
And I hate that address bar thing. Brrrr. So complicated!
Yeah the address bar sucks big time cos I kept seeing the sites I went to when I type the address. Or baka naman hindi pa ako sanay!!!
But the thing is firefox 3 is fassssssssssssssssssssssssssssst!!!
I love it.
where;s the linux version?
Gotcha!!!
wow! almost 10K Filipino pledgers last time i check!
I like the new address bar.. yan nga yung pinaka ok na fdeature nf firefox 3. Why? you don’t need to input the whole site url! Just type a word like “technology” then all the sites that you have visited in the past that has something to do with that word will pop out. unlike before you have to put the exact URL.
i also obeserved the downtime of mozilla download site.. i tried again after a few hours and there i got it. now its running.
[...] could have done better than this figure if their server didn’t go down during the first few hours of rush [...]
They actually pushed the update and the download link 24 hours before the actual date of Guinness recording. They lost a couple million already for doing that.
FF3 has been downloadable and updateable since UTC+1200 stroke yesterday. Really weird if they want to establish a world records :p
Anyway, I re-downloaded so I’ll be counted.
I don’t know, but I did not encounter any of those downtime server you mentioned. I’m pretty sure I downloaded it just a few minutes after the official start.
im using FF3 just now….
