Blackberry Curve 8520 launched

Research in Motion today unveiled a new and affordable version of their Blackberry Curve series. Though RIM execs could not give an estimated price (as the telcos will be the one making the final price), they say that the Blackberry Curve 8520 is their most affordable one ever.

The Curve 8520 resembles the look and feel of a smaller Nokia E63.

256MB Flash memory
up to 32GB on microSD

Bluetooth 2.0
GPRS/EDGE
2MP camera with video recording
Wi-Fi 802.11b/g
Li-Ion 1150 mAh battery

The Curve 8520 is also looking to be a multimedia phone as it has a dedicated media keys on top, a 3.5mm stereo headset jack and can sync with iTunes or Windows Media Player via Blackberry Media Sync.

Pictured above is the Blackberry Curve 8520 beside a Nokia E71 — the Curve is shorter but thicker than the E71. And while the keys are smaller on the Curve, they are raised higher and more spaced apart.

The handset should be available thru Globe and Smart soon.

For some strange reason, I find the Blackberry phones more appealing than the Nokia E-series.

Hopefully, I’d be able to save enough money to get a Blackberry phone this Christmas. Unless SonyEricsson comes up with better phones.

this made me hypothesize a gadget equation:

    Nokia E71 Blackberry Curve 8900
    ——— = ———————-
    Nokia E63 Blackberry Curve 8520

a younger sibling of the Blackberry Curve 8900? just like the Nokia E63 being the younger sibling of the Nokia E71.

i’m a noob when it comes to how these blackberry phones compare to ‘regular’ phones.

i have a Nokia e63 (very close to Nokia e71), i was just wondering of the possible reasons one would switch to a blackberry phone. can someone come up with a few good reasons for the benefit of someone like me? :-)

i’ve tried the push email software from nokia and seven networks, i think they do the job just fine. if they do it fine, why switch? just a matter of preference?

    dami tanong. hehehe.

The Nokia doesn’t even compare to this phone because there is a lot you can do with Blackberry that you can’t with Nokia.

Hey Abe, the event was good right? Except for the P120.00 Shangri-la collected from us :) .

This is an entry level BB — NO 3G, no GPS and 320×240 display. Pinoys would buy this based on the subsidy given by the Telcos and not because of its specs.

Globe has a personal BB plan I don’t know about the other Telco.

@reina 2 hours lang actually. Had an Apple event there last week and the parking pass I got had no extra charge.

u can do so much more with symbian phones, just install third party softwares and you’ll be amazed by its capabilities.

by the way, it was not meant to compare Blackberry vs Nokia. it was just meant to scale ratio within each product groupings, with this unit almost the same as Blackberry Curve 8900. same with Nokia E63 to be almost the same with E71.

The power of the BlackBerry is in the RIM network with push mail and super fast instant messaging. If you’re not using (and paying your operator for) that, you can’t really compare a BB with other phones.

I saw the BB Curve at globe P15800 but I also saw it in the newspaper for around P13000-14000 with smart.

  33. Gravatar Icon lou replied on Dec 26th, 2009 at 3:48 pm (33)

I know someone that get her Blackberry 8520 for just P15,000 in a globe store (Prepaid), the P800 is actually an extra charge for a 1 month service (not sure what it is). You may request not to include the 1 month service, just ask them what the service is all about and decide whether you need it or not.

  34. Gravatar Icon ESE replied on Jan 14th, 2010 at 10:25 pm (34)

I will be getting a BB Curve 8520 from Globe. The unit comes free with Plan 2500. You just need to shell out the first one-month subscription. And beside, to enjoy the email and IMs, there is a Php800/month subscription, on top of the Plan subscription. I guess it is worthwhile subscribing to the Personal BB Plan, so as to maximize the Blackberry RIM network and super-fast IM capability. If you are not satisfied with the camera function – this is what I can say – BB phones are not meant of high-quality/digital photos. If you want high-quality/digital photos, use the Nikon or Canon DSLR. Remember, Blackberry phones are meant for business and not necessary for leisure.
