About 2 weeks ago, Nokia quietly launched a new Windows Live rich client application on several N-Series Nokia devices. The initial line-up included series 60 devices such as the Nokia N73, N80i, N95, N76 and the N93i.
You can check it out by going to www.nokia.com/windowslive/ — however, they say it’s still not available in the Philippines yet. Supported countries are limited to Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, U.K., Sweden, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
I tried checking out the site thru my Nokia 6233 and I’m already seeing the site. The download links would not work though so we’ll have to wait until they roll it out here in Asia. (Mental note: ask the Nokia execs in SG about this.)
Several basic services came out with Mobile Windows Live: Live Contacts, MSN Messenger, Hotmail and Spaces. Of course, there’s Live Search too.
The catch, it’s free right now but they will start charging users 2 Euros once they’ve finally rolled it out completely. This guy named Phil from Microsoft’s Online Services Group spilled it:
Initially this is a free trial, sometime later this year we will enable billing for about two euro’s a month. To answer the obvious question - yes we are going to enable more countries and more devices, I can’t say specifically when/what now, but there will be more coming in the next few months or so. Then, starting early next year Nokia Series 40 devices will ship with the bits probably already installed on the device. Don’t have specific model numbers yet.
Bummer. Why are they charging for usage? Should be free right? Besides, you’re also being charge for airtime by your respective telcos.
Looks like Microsoft is playing catch with Yahoo! on the mobile service arena. But where’s Google?

I read somewhere else that it’s only the IM that’s charged, while the rest are free.
That’s in line with the Mobile IM strategies done by other operators, except that the charging is integrated with the subscriber’s account. Well maybe this Nokia/Microsoft thing is like that as well, but they failed to mention it.
But whether it’s Nokia-driven or operator-driven service (where they offer a say, Vodafone Messenger for Windows Live which is supported on multiple handsets.) - the key is - everyone can talk to everyone else using their Windows Live ID regardless of their telco (or mobile number).
