Poll: What’s inside your rig, Intel or AMD?

Listen to article

Last month, I upgraded my old desktop PC. I have been a longtime AMD fan and for the last 5 years or so, have used almost all of their CPUs — Athlon, Sempron, AMD64+, and the X2. Even most of the dedicated servers I get runs AMD Opteron CPUs. They’re cheaper and does the job just fine.

However, during my latest upgrade, I switched to the other side — an Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz. I actually got the works — 4GB DDR2 800 RAM, Inno3D 8600 GTS 256MB DDR3 and a Gigabyte 3D Aurora.

Gigabyte 3D Aurora

The switch was prompted with the realization that at the top of the food chain, it looks like Intel has taken back the lead for some time now. In the lower end CPUs, AMD is may be seem neck and neck with Intel — Athlon 64 X2s vs. Intel Intel E4x00 C2D — but go up in the quad cores and you’ll see Intel becomes cheaper.

Has AMD lost the battle altogether? Has their “cheap but fast” brand label been diluted?

Our poll for this week will look into you CPU preferences — What’s inside your rig, Intel or AMD? For good measure, I also added in the poll IBM’s PowerPC (those running pre-Intel Macs) and Via processors.

My desktop has a good ol’ almost 5-year-old Pentium 4, and my 6-month-old laptop has a Core2Duo. As far as I know, Intel has regained the performance crown ever since they launched C2D, so I’m proud of my lappy :)

As for graphics, my desktop has a good ol’ ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP, not PCI-E. My motherboard is really old. I need a new rig -_-; but…) for my super laptop, it has an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, which is more than powerful for my gaming needs. I won’t be upgrading my desktop anytime soon. My laptop is my gaming rig! :p

i have 2 rigs both Intel and AMD.

a. Q6600 QuadCore 2.4ghz @ OC – 3ghz. (WinXP Pro)
b. Athlon X2 4800+ 2.5ghz (Slackware Linux)

For High-end rigs … go for Intel… if you have more cash to spend.

hmmmm…on the server side i think AMD Opteron got it first for the low power but fast chips ;) while on the desktop war intel has got it…

been using my intel P4 630 rig for more than 2 yrs…(3 Ghz, 2mb cache)…photoshop efx still flies…

OT:
for gamers delight…nothing beats PS3 with its Cell chip…1080p (hdmi 1.3 as well)

computers are getting faster every 6 months…and who needs a quad core chip when you only use it for net browsing and checking emails? ;)

Intel user ever since bought my first computer. I used an AMD rig once but it has not convinced me to switch. I am currently using an intel quad core and I am more than satisfied with it in terms of price/performance ratio.

WOW! 3D aurora hehehe! Ok din yung Cool Master Stacker sa PC Hub! heheh 11K.. almost as close as the 3d Aurora..

Anyways: I used to have a AMD pcs (which is still being used by my sister) but I switched to Intel Pentium D last year. And I’m hoping to upgrade it by next year to either a intel Core 2 duo or Core 2 Quad or a Core 2 Six or Eight. hehe. and maybe a mid range card Nvidia 9600GT Sonic. hehe. Again. “hoping!”

i got an athlon x2 4400+ right now, almost a year old. the only reason why i got this is because i didnt have the budget for an e6750 last year. and decent AM2 motherboards are also cheaper than the intel ones. hopefully i can replace this soon with an intel rig when ddr3 prices go down to current ddr2 levels.

btw do i have to register in order to join the poll?

Just got another pc last week:

– Intel Core2Quad Q6600 2.4 Ghz
– 4Gb DDR2 800
– ASUS GeForce 9600GT EN9600GT/HTDI/512M Video Card
– 4 x 400GB HDD (Raid 10)
– 3Ware 9650SE-4LPML Raid Controller

It’s much faster than my AMD pc, but was still expecting it to be a lot faster than expected.

p.s. bought the raid controller online via courier

I’ve been an Intel user for the longest time. I’m thinking of upgrading my desktop to AMD because I thought it would be cheaper. Now, I’m having second thoughts.

Intel for Office type of usage
AMD for Gaming

Same goes with:
PC for programming
Mac for graphics designing

My first rig is Intel Core 2 Duo.
Building my second rig, will be an AMD.

Intel used to be more expensive, and AMDs cheaper, but hotter. But now with the multicore’s AMD is having a hard time catching up even in the server area and with the processors are energy efficient. Even with AMDs purchase of ATI, they seem to be not doing so good. Its surprising, I wouldnt have forseen this a few years back but its happening.

My rig’s still working after roughly 4 years. It has the Intel Pentium 4, 2Ghz, 1.525V max., with a System Bus of 400MHz. Kinda old, but still does the job.
