Reports from DigiTimes last Tuesday points to Asustek planning to offer a Celeron-based Eee Box on top of the existing Intel Atom systems in order to lower retail price and boost sales.

It’s pretty obvious that Asus did not get good reception with their Eee Box compared to the Eee PC. A system with an Atom processor and 80GB hard drive, keyboard, mouse, and Eee Stick is selling for NT$9,999 (Php14,500).

When Asus debuted the Eee Box in the Philippines, it had a retail price of Php24,900 which includes a 16″ LCD monitor. That leaves the Eee Box to around Php17,500 which is still expensive.

Then, there were stores like Rising Sun Computers which offers the Intel Atom and motherboard (Intel BLKD945GCLF Little Falls) for just Php3,000.

So it looks like the Eee Box is a non-seller primarily because of the price. Asus hopes that by downgrading to a Celeron 220 (1.2GHz), they’d be able to offer the set at NT$7,988 (US$240 or Php11,500) — which I think is still expensive IMO. They’ve upgraded the HDD to 120GB from 80GB though.

What’s bugging me though is that the CPU downgrade from Atom to Celeron on the Eee Box was worth about Php3,000 on the retail price. That’s actually the same price as getting a new set of Atom CPU and mobo. Besides, how much is an Atom CPU really cost coming out of Intel — just $44 a pop.

Now, here’s the trouble with going back to Celeron:

What happens to the “very low power consumption” promise of an Eee Box? The Celeron 220 has a TDP of 19 watts while the Atom is only at 2.5 watts.

Celeron desktop systems are pretty common these days. How would Asus make the Eee Box edge over the rest and those build-your-own systems?

Intel will be coming out with the new dual-core Atom processors (N330) and marketing efforts will be focused on the nettops running those new low-power CPUs.

There must be something really off with the pricing of the Eee Box that contributed in its lackluster sales this year.

I thought it was such a lucrative business for SIM card retailers to be able to sell these special numbers (gold numbers) for as much as 200 times their street value.

Just look at these numbers:

0907.8000.800
0907.8000.008
Php8,000 each

0909.8888.855
0909.8888.833
0909.8888.000
0909.8888.111
0909.8888.222
0909.8888.666
Php8,000 each

0909.8886.666
0909.8888.988
0909.8888.788
Php10,000 each

0909.8888.882
0909.8888.883
Php20,000 each

Was shocked when I saw the numbers sold for 20 grand. Are people really buying golden numbers that expensive?

There are 3 commercial anti-virus softwares that are made for Macs as well as the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Intego VirusBarrier X5
Mac OS X 10.4 or higher
Also scans iPhone and iPod Touch for malware
Price: $69.95

Norton AntiVirus 11.0 for Mac
Price: $49.95

McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.6 (McAfee Virex 7.7 for Macintosh)
Price: $36.55

Apple has been selling some of these anti-virus on their online store for some time now so I wonder why they had this ad in the first place?

What’s more surprising was that Apple is actually recommending to its users that they should run multiple-antivirus software:

“Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple anti-virus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult.”

No wonder Apple had its recent ad banned in UK for misleading consumers.

Got an email just now announcing the shutdown of Pownce (similar to Jaiku, Twitter and Plurk).

In a short email to Pownce users, it looks like the userbase was bought by SixApart:

We are sad to announce that Pownce is shutting down on December 15, 2008. As of today, Pownce will no longer be accepting new users or new pro accounts.

To help with your transition, we have built an export tool so you can save your content. You can find the export tool at Settings > Export. Please export your content by December 15, 2008, as the site will not be accessible after this date.

Please visit our new home to find out more: http://www.sixapart.com/pownce

Our thanks go out to everyone who contributed to the Pownce community,

The Pownce Crew

Pownce is co-owned by Digg founder Kevin Rose who started the service to compete against Twitter. Despite Rose’s popularity, the service didn’t picked up much users. By Kevin’s last mention, the numbers were just around 100k worldwide.

The first sign of its impending doom was when Kevin Rose opened up a Twitter account and was pimping it during their Diggnation show instead of his own service. According to Twitterholic, Kevin is on top of the list at 75,718 followers.

It’s possible Jaiku will be next in line, an acquisition made by Google back in October 2007 that has not made any much noise since then.

So which gadget is on your shopping list this season? Is it a phone, a camera or a new mp3 player? Are you looking to get the big ticket items like a 37″ HDTV or a Macbook or will settle with a smaller token like the PSP Slim or the Nintendo DS Lite?

Last Christmas, I got myself a Canon 40D. This year, I wasn’t thinking of any and instead, thought of spending an extra week or so in Europe when I fly there on a business trip this week.

The team, composed of graduates from Ateneo, UP and La Salle, conceptualized then created the prototype in a span of four months — an LCD TV that’s powered by a personal computer produced from spare parts and locally available electronic devices.

The current prototype runs on a stripped-down Ubuntu powered by an old Celeron processor. The team plans to further enhance the UI and hopefully include an Intel Atom processor once it goes into final design and full production. As it is, the iTV should be able to play music, movies, photos and surf the internet.

In a way, you can say that Inovent, the company behind this iTV, wants to redesign your living room and re-invent the regular media center set up — no more Apple TVs, SlingBox or Popcorn Hour. Since the Ilumina will have a built-in hard drive, you can download all the media you want and store it on the TV for playback later.

They didn’t say how much this will be priced but they promise it will be in the 5 digits (below 100k) for a 32-inch Ilumina (32″ LCD TVs right now cost around Php50k).

The final product should look like this once it goes out into the market by 2009.

Since the platform is open source, the team can develop and release an API so third-party developers can contribute and extend the Ilumina’s feature and functionalities.

For now, the team is seeking some venture capitalist to partner and push the development and manufacturing stage as soon as possible.

You can Digg this Story to help promote them.

It just froze and the blog was inaccessible. The rest that followed was some sort of reality check and yet another lesson in making backups of backups.

I sent a request to the data center techs to do a hard reboot from their end. After the first reboot, the server would not respond as if it was hanging or something. A second hard reboot made it respond and I was able to login to SSH and restarted all services (Apache, mySQL, Bind).

However, the websites are still not running despite the fact that apache and mysql were fine. I was watching the processes and there were no instances of any HTTP which I initially thought was broken or the configurations went bonkers.

After an hour of checking, viewing config files and restarting services, the problem still remained. While looking at the list of accounts, I discovered some of the accounts had zero disk usage as though they don’t have anything stored in them. I realized several of the domain accounts were on the secondary drive and that drive is practically missing or was not loaded by the system.

I already expected the worst while praying for the best — the server could have suffered an irrecoverable hard drive failure. I immediately checked for the internal backups and found out that not all accounts had the latest copy. This blog specifically did not have a complete backup. Apparently, the huge account size (2.6GB) prevented the automated backup service to complete the daily backups. Same thing with the weekly backup.

I still have the monthly backups and I could start from there but that would mean that I’ll lose several weeks of entries or at most about a month.

I ran some tests and fixes on the missing drive. Luckily, another graceful reboot was all I needed for the system to detect the missing drive and load it. All that checking and diagnosis as well as coordinating with the DC engineers took me over 2 hours to finally resolve. This was fairly quick compared to other problems before where it’s usually taken some 4 to 6 hours (and there was a time about 48 hours due to a drive replacement and an OS reload).

It reminded me that despite the multiple automated backups, one should also consider regular local backups.

For WordPress blogs, this would mean downloading the Themes and Plugins folder, the Uploads inside WP-Content and a full DB backup (there’s a plugin for this one) and download. Doing this once every week-end should do as well as downloading your daily posts using feedreader clients such as FeedDemon might spare you some headache when the time comes your backups fail on you.

Nokia Executive VP Timo Ihamuotil was quoted saying “We have concluded that the continuation of our investment in Japan-specific localised products is no longer sustainable“.

That’s is certainly very small until you learn that only 5% of the mobile phones in Japan are coming from foreign manufacturers. So it’s not just Nokia but every other non-Japanese brand. Just that Nokia was first to call it quits.

Not surprisingly, Nokia will still sell a couple of its high-end phones in Japan — something like the $30,000-a-pop Nokia Vertu.

My prediction of under Php15k was surpassed — it’s actually just Php11,900.

As expected, LG’s approach was to reach as many people in the market and give them an option to get a full touch screen phone at a very affordable price. Yes, they sacrificed 3G and WiFi connectivity just to be able to get the LG Cookie to that price.

It’s a huge gamble but if they can attract enough people with the Php12k price and get them to get used to their Flash UI interface as well as a virtual keyboard, then they could introduce a more equipped version next year (which executives say they’ll do).

For the meantime, LG is addressing an obvious gap in the market — people who are eager to try full touch screen phones but would not want to risk shelling out 20k, 30k or 40k for it.

Despite the premium price tag of Php250,000 for the 52″ model, Samsung Series 8 HDTV makes it up with a ton of features:

Full HD @ 1080p (1920×1080 pixel resolution)

70,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio

DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) function

120Mhz frame rate

Not the slimmest in the market but at 1.8″, that’s thinner than the other previous models. I’ve seen their tech guys hooking it up with a wireless router (it has Ethernet at the back) so you can share media content from any PC or laptop in the house and the TV will be able to play it. I was told all the decoding is done on the TV but didn’t get which file formats are supported.

There’s a USB port (WiseLink Pro) where you can plugin a flash drive and read off media files from there. I’m guessing you can also attach it to an external drive for some DivX or MKV action.

Samsung also introduced a Blu-Ray home entertainment theater system (7.1) worth about Php69,000 while the stand-alone Blu-Ray payer costs about Php24,900.

Early this morning, I guested at Mornings @ ANC to join the discussions about the product. We wanted to demonstrate the DLNA and wireless features but the team forgot to bring the necessary routers. We had to settle with a Blue-Ray copy of the movie “300″ rushed in from TJ’s house.

Disclosure: I was contacted by Samsung PR (Jayce Perlas of Perlas & Luna) to join them on ANC and was paid for my appearance.

10.2 Mbps 3G/HSDPA
built-in GPS receiver w/ A-GPS support
200 MB internal memory
up to 8GB via microSD
TV-out
Stereo FM radio with RDS
Stereo speakers

Of course, there aren’t any 3G networks yet that broadcasts such high-speed bandwidth but it’s nice to know that when the time comes, this phone will be ready to suck it all in.

Nokia has even upgraded the S40 platform with the 6th edition. The design is similar to earlier models we’ve already seen like Nokia 6600 slide and Nokia 6210 phones.

The Nokia 6260 will be released early 2009 when the Nokia E63 and the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been launched in the Philippines.

Expect the suggested retail price to be north of Php18,500 (before taxes).

Update: Nokia Philippines Corporate Communications left a comment below that this unit will not be released in the Philippines. That means the only way you’d see them selling here is via the gray market (most probably from China).
