ARM announces 2.5GHz Cortex-A15 MPCore

Listen to article

If you’re familiar with the 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 that powers the Samsung Wave and Galaxy S including the new Archos Android tablets, then it’s going to be easy to imagine what a dual Cortex-A15 running up to 2.5GHz would look like.

Samsung also announced a few days ago that they’re shipping their new dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 1GHz starting 4th quarter of this year.

The Cortex A15 MPCore processor can deliver up to 5 times the performance of current smartphone processors.

ARM’s dual-core Cortex-A15 MPCore can reach clock speeds of up to 2.5GHz and should be available by 2012. For the meantime, expect a lot of new smartphones and tablet to run the top-of-the-line ARM Cortex-A8 1GHz and possibly new Android smartphones from Samsung running their dual-core Cortex-A9 that’s capable of full HD 1080p playback.

Actually, the goal is to build such more powerful processors without increasing power consumption. They said they pulled it off with the dual core A9.

Well indeed smartphones are not just only getting smarter but they are now becoming more powerful. I think they will have workaround for the battery to support their powerful processors.

understandable na karamihan ng mga comments ay puro question sa battery life. pero kung nagmagandang loob lang sana ang ating blogger na banggitin ang energy consumption nito (tulad ng ibang sites), eh di sana walang uninformed comments mga suki natin dito.

“ARM today announced the Cortex A15 MPCore processor that promises to deliver a 5x performance improvement over today’s advanced smartphone processors, within a comparable energy footprint.”

The good thing is it keeps on improving with almost same price. Now, that’s consumer electronics in general is all about. Most innovative, highly competitive and most exciting industry.

32/28nm? faster processor but I think lesser consumption. How about 3D HD on mobile phones and gaming handhelds =D

@JunAlquis

Well, we haven’t seen much improvement with the battery technology we currently use. Li-Ion batteries aren’t just enough anymore.

great power comes with great responsibility. meaning great processor means new greater battery??

The more important question is how will this affect battery life?

Do we really need faster processors now? I honestly don’t think so. So what if your phone can shoot and play 1080p? It is a small device, so that much resolution would not matter.

These are mobile devices. What the heck will you do with an uber-fast phone if it would barely last a day?

This news for me won’t matter unless we get better battery performance..
