Asus Eee PC 1004DN now with DVD Drive

On of the more obvious differentiation between a netbook and a regular notebook or laptop is that the latter has one while netbooks don’t. Asus is changing that definition by introducing the Eee PC 1004DN.

asus eeepc 1004dn

The specs include:

Asus EeePC 1004DN
Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz
GN40 with Integrated GMA 4500M graphics
10 inch screen, 1024 x 600 pixels
DVD-RW
1GB (up to 2GB)
120GB HDD
802.11b/g/n WiFi, bluetooth 2.1
1.3MP webcam

The 6 cell (5200mAh up to 5.9 hours) battery and the optical disk drive added more weight to the Eee PC which brings it to 1.45kg or 3.2lbs.

Why a built-in DVD drive? I personally don’t know — I guess, just to expand options and get more sales. I think the external ODD is a much better option since you can just leave it at home if you won’t use it. External ODDs now are pretty cheap too (as low as Php2,500).

a built-in dvd drive? given those features & specs, i’d rather get myself a regular laptop. i’m sticking to my 900HA. :)

I think you’re right Abe. One of the feats that separate a netbook form laptops is the weight. Throwing in a DVD drive kinda defeats the purpose. At the end of the day, netbooks are about portability.

I guess Asus is starting to run out of ideas to keep the Eee PC offering something new.

i hope this isn’t priced same way(pricey) as with the asus eeepc s101.

on the other hand, s101 is probably the sleekest netbook to have eer surfaced the computing world, if not because of its logo.

a dvd drive will just help drain the battery even more. and if you’re gonna opt for an extended battery, it’s weight will be just like that of a regular laptop.

    @ Aloof

    that is really a point!!
VIA and Intel also claim their latest GN40 or VX885 can play HD video; however, does video quality really matter when the screen in front of you is only 8.9″ or 10″?

    ridiculous~

Cool sana, but then mas maganda sana kung VGA port na lang (tama ba yung term ko?), yung ginagamit to connect to devices like projectors.

ano po ba magandang bilhin, netbook or notebook? 30K lang po kasi ang budget ko, wala naman po akong makita na atleast 30K na notebook na may atleast 1GB na memory, 160GB na HDD at atleast intel core duo. OK po bang netbook na lang ang bilhin ko kaysa notebook?

    @ walang pera…
check out octagon at robinsons ermita. saw a neo laptop with those specs (vista basic OS) priced at P27,999.

depends on what you’ll use your netbook/notebook for. i have both, but it’s my netbook (Eee PC 900HA) that i usually bring along with me. my laptop (compaq presario c737tu) became my desktop replacement.
