It is running a promo dubbed “Ultimate Steal” for students who want Microsoft Office 2007 but can’t afford to shell out the full amount.
The promotion runs through April 30 and starts Wednesday in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. It launches next week in France, Italy and Spain. To be eligible, Microsoft said students have to be “actively enrolled” in a higher education program and have an e-mail address from that school.
“We’re listening to students who have told us they need Microsoft Office for their studies and want more flexible ways to get the latest version,” Alan Yates, general manager of Worldwide Education at Microsoft, said in a statement. “The Ultimate Steal is the latest in a long history of providing compelling academic offers for students.”
Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate FPP (Full Packaged Product) costs Php45,100 at Villman. Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student OEM is Php7,188. My question, though, is why are they running the promo in the west when it’s obvious students in Asia will most likely need the educational discounts? Anyway, hopefully that promo reaches our shores too.

It’s because they know that when they release a cheaper version in the Philippines, the more the pirated versions will come out.
Microsoft Philippines should do something like this, too.
and if they consider purchasing power, we have it so much lower here. In fact, they should have socialized pricing in these parts of the world.
@Chino yray: I think that’s a given anywhere. Pirated downloadables on BitTorrent (et al.) come even from the West. The only difference here is that burned copies are available in markets.
Anyway, cheaper versions of original software are just like the movie industry’s strategy of R5 versions of DVDs. At least there is a chance someone would buy the original. IMO, no one here would buy MSO for PHP45k. But I’d surely like to have my own original copy if it costs dramatically less.
I know people who buy Office Suite as a group. I think Office is good for six people.
I’m crossing my fingers for this one. I’ve been using Publisher and OneNote for quite awhile and I’ve already found them indispensible and it will be probably a blessing if I can get my hands on an original copy at THAT price.

I guess the best thing for you guys in the Philippines to do is ask a friend here in the US to get it for you and ship it or send it through someone who’s goin home to the Philippines.

Microsoft Philippines should have that promo as well! but I’m currently happy with IBM’s Lotus Symphony (Beta 3 as of this time), OpenOffice.org, and other free and open source alternatives.
