Canon EOS 1000D Rebel XS to replace 400D

Canon yesterday announced a new dSLR camera in its Rebel series — the EOS 1000D. Its release was aimed to replace the old Canon EOS 400D XTi which first came out in August of 2006.

This entry-level dSLR will have some features stolen from the 450D and the 40D but will carry a pricetag in the vicinity of the old 400D.

Canon EOS 1000D

Camera Specs:
10.1 MP
2.5″ LCD display
ISO 100 - 1600
3888 x 2592 pixels (max)
3.0 FPS
450 g
SD Card
Upgraded image processor from DiGIC II to DiGIC III
Live View shooting mode

Of course, it will come with the IS version of the kit lens. I’m curious why Canon has decided to do away with the Compact Flash card (CF Card) in favor of the SD card which they also did with the 450D. They also didn’t increase the LCD display to 3 inch which, IMO, makes a huge difference when checking up on shots.

Expect this model to carry a price tag between Php28,000 to Php33,000 when it reaches the local market (though Canon suggested AU$1,000 or Php 42,000).

I’ve been comparing the specs between this and 450D. It seems like 450D wins. Unless I missed something.

Hopefully, someone can come up with a comparison review. :D

Of course the 450D wins. Megapixels pa lang eh. But the selling factor here is the price. IS lens and Digic III? The 400D is owned. The 400D might become cheaper still.

I’m curious why Canon has decided to do away with the Compact Flash card (CF Card) in favor of the SD card which they also did with the 450D.

The lower end DSLRs will probably use SDs from now on. Both Canon and Nikon are trying to get P&S owners to switch to DSLRs, and since their own P&S models use SD cards, they assume that these users will already have a few SD cards on hand. Part of the cost of the DSLR is the switch from your current memory card format to CF - Nikon eliminated that cost with their low-end units, and now Canon has followed suit.

Correction, the 1000D is not a replacement for the 400D, but it creates a new bracket lower than the 400D geared towards newbies and people who wants to get into the hobby. There’s no point comparing this one to the 400 or the 450D.
