Photo World Asia 2008

Just got back from a whole afternoon stroll at the Photo World Asia 2008 (others refer to it as PhotoWorld Manila). As usual, the Glorietta Activity Center was swamped with hobbyist and enthusiast photographers with all the sales and discount promos.

There was also the usual Cosplay modeling contest though I did not join the throng of photographers snapping shots near the stage since I didn’t bring my flash anyway. Stayed most of the time at the Canon booth where a print out on the bond paper says “Free Memory Cards if you Show Us you Canon dSLR”. Actually, it was only for the first 50 camera owners and the capacity is a measly 128MB.

Their photo booth, though, was a show stopper. Even non-Canon dSLR users are crowding around the lone model. Like last year’s PhotoWorld Manila, Canon (in my biased) opinion draws the most number of curious people especially with their demo units like the 5D hooked with an EF 300mm 2.8L IS USM telephoto lens.

This was also the time I dropped a huge wad of cash on a single lens. I already have a telephoto lens (Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6) but this one from Canon is something I’ve been drooling over for about a year now. Since the Canon Lens Sale was extended and the unit was in stock, I thought it was time to make the big jump — the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM is my very first luxury line of lens from Canon.

Too bad this didn’t make it to my pre-nup photo shoot last Saturday. But boy, this hobby sure is very expensive. The PhotoWorld Asia 2008 started last January 31 and will end on February 5, 2008 at the Glorietta Activity Center.

I think we should be more careful when we put title to an event. ‘Photo World Asia’ connotes that there are Exhibitors from Asian countries. Are there Exhibitors from other countries? I did not see any.

Strictly speaking, from what I learned in Milan, Italy during my one year study on Exhibition Management Course, we can only title an event as an ‘international’ event when there is a ratio of 70-30 amongst Exhibitors, meaning, 30% of total exhibit space is occupied by foreign exhibitors.

Thus, saying ‘Photo World Asia’ is a misnomer..it should be ‘Photo World Manila’… to give it a proper name and title.

      @ sylver – intramuros naman!

      @ jayvee & luis – shoot tayo!

@ alibata – was talking to the GM of JT PhotoWorld 3 weeks ago about this. I was there last year too.

@ Nors – yeah, was very surprised because I thought it’s just a metrowide event. Went around looking for more booth but found much fewer participants than last year.

@ jamie – models? it’s a come-on. so more photographers will flock their booths.
