Record Videos with Canon 40D dSLR

Listen to article

Canon dSLR owners who wished they had the same HD video recording features like the Canon 5D Mark II might find this little nifty tool with their cameras. I was able to record video using my Canon EOS 40D.

The app is pretty simple — extract the software, connect the USB cable to your dSLR (40D, 1000D, 450D), click on Record, zoom/focus the camera lens manually, click on stop when done.

The raw video output runs at 1024×640 resolution with a bitrate of 55KB/s. Here’s a sample I took and uploaded on YouTube.

The original recorded video was of very good quality although the frame-rate was a bit slow at about 17fps. You can see the original 11 second clip here (41MB).

Download and try it.

Neat! I wonder if there’s a similar program for Nikon dSLRs?

Though I’d get a dedicated vid cam to record videos instead. What good is a video if it doesn’t have sound? ;)

@troydl – I think so. Still looking for that Russian website where I got the app.

Is this OK for Canon’s 400D? Can you tell me the link you got it from?
