$100 MIT Laptop to be released this November

Listen to article

The MIT Media Laboratory expects to launch a prototype of its US$100 laptop in November. The lab expects to unveil a prototype of the $100 laptop at the World Summit on the Information Society on November17.

The 500 MHz laptop will run a “light” version of the open-source Linux operating system. It will have a two-mode screen, so it can be viewed in color and then by pushing a button or activating software switch to a black-and-white display, which can be viewed in bright sunlight at four times normal resolution.

The laptops will have four USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports, be WiFi-enabled with cellphone support and will come with 1GB of RAM. Yes, you read it right — 1GB or memory.

A sub Php6,000 laptop? This is really something. The government could now afford to equip elementary and high schools across the country with these.

I hope I could get my hands on one of those too. :D

SERIOUSLY RIGHT I THINK ITS ABOUT TIME WE TOOK THIS SERIOUSLY. I MEAN COME ON GUYS PEOPLE WOULD DIE FOR ONE OF THESE LITTLE THINGS. I MEAN THEY’LL SAVE LIVES. TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO MAKE FOOD AND DO OPERATIONS AND STUFF LIKE.

I THINK SOME IMMATURE PEOPLE NEED TO GET A LIFE AND START CONSIDERING THE FACTORS OF LIFE AND DEATH IN LIKE YOU KNOW THOSE COUNTRIES WHERE THEY DONT HAVE XBOX’S N TAHT.

anyway laters chaps.

well, scott, let’s think before we speak. $100 of food will give a child food for a month. a laptop will open them up to a world of opportunity that they didn’t dream possible.

If it wasn’t implied here, these laptops will be WiFi capable which is equivalent to about 100 million text books. USB ports out the wazoo? Who cares how may it has? That just makes it more compatible for whatever may be necessary in the future. Laptops are much more valuable than food in the long run.

You can catch a fish for a man and he’ll eat for a day. You can teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime.

Why don’t they just give each child a US$100 worth of food, clean water, medicine and textsbook each year?

That might be a better idea than laptops with Wi-Fi and “USB port up the wazoo”.

I’m sorry, but those lab rats working on this with the NGOs might be smart, but that in way translates into intellegence.

sylver, if you’ve been to their site, they explicitly said it will not be in production for consumers. However, being an ‘open’ project, I suppose they’ll be sharing how they were able to build one eventually.
