Boot Windows in seconds with iRAM

Listen to article

Gigabyte Technology claims to have discovered a faster way to boot up Windows XP computers.

The company has produced a PC add-in card, called iRam, that comes with four DDR DRAM slots designed to be used as a PC drive. Because the iRam uses DRAM rather than a hard-disk to store information, data can be retrieved from the drive up to 60 times faster than is possible with a hard drive, according to Gigabyte…

Pretty impressive idea though my only concern would be the 12 hour internal battery when the PC is not plugged (although turned off). To most people in other parts of the world, 12 hours is enough, but what if we get a 24 hour black-out around here? Say bye-bye to my Windows installation?

If you have known about the controversial company L (Lieberman | http://go-l.com ) they have been using a PuRAM (?) technology for a couple of years now (as stated in their website). This is where the whole OS is installed, so being a RAM / SSD it boots and operates fast as they claimed (actually I don’t know since I never bought any “super” PC from them tagged with up to USD$5000+ price). All other contents are stored in the HD.

But it’s a good idea though. If onyl they can find a way to prolong the battery life to say a couple of days. Critical files may be stored in conventional HDDs while the boot system can run on the 4GB (max) iRAM. This is also good for game servers.
