Lessons learned from a $1.87 cheque

Last week, I got a note from the Makati Post Office for a pick-up of a registered mail. I got curious since I am not expecting anything from them nor have I been alerted by someone thru email that I will be getting one for any reason. My Chitika payout was already sent over Paypal (which I am not claiming since they sent it to a different email address) and my AdSense is now delivered thru DHL.

Imagine my surprise when I found out it came from Xoom. Well, I’ve been part of their affiliate program since 2002 and it was only now that I got to hear from them via the mail. They were a one-time advertiser on one of my older sites which I used to handle. And since a majority of the international remittances I receive are coursed thru Xoom, I though I’d make a few additional bucks off of it (as an affiliate).

The cheque is written for $1.87; yes, a dollar and eighty seven cents. I’m going to frame to piece of paper. haha!

Lessons learned:

  • Pick an affiliate program that pays. Ask around or do a search for feedback and reviews of their affiliate program.
  • Choose an affiliate that can also potentially cater to the visitors of your websites. If your readers are mostly Filipino males between the ages of 18 to 45, you won’t earn a buck with affiliate products like Revlon or Estée Lauder.
  • Drop the affiliate if they don’t perform in a month or two. The real estate could be better off on other programs.

We have just started a website that is more of a pinoy celebrity portal, but also has a youtube like feature, and we are also going to have live video chat abilities with local celebrities, thus the name ;)

I’m looking for affiliates to populate the pages with , and found your article useful. Of course we use adsense, and now maybe xoom as well ;) Any other affiliate programs anyone could pass along?

      Thanks, and great blog!
