To Bloggers: There’s No Money in the Long Tail

A recent article from Read/Write Web hypothesizes that bloggers can’t make significant money off of the long tail. While others agree, I don’t on several points.

Alex Iskold reiterates that “You can make money on the long tail but not in the long tail. The precise point of Anderson’s argument is that it is a collective of the long tail amounts to substantial dollars because the volume is there.” In essense, he’s saying that bloggers can’t really make advertising money from their blog but large companies like Google can make money out of all the hundreds of thousands of bloggers. While that’s true, it’s still relative.

First, where do we draw the line between not making money and actually making money from blogs? A few dollars a month is not making money. How about a few hundred dollars?

If we go back and review my previous poll on how much bloggers earn from Google AdSense, about 38% of the respondents say they get at least $100 a month. And that does not include the 26% of the respondents from the TLA poll who says they get at least another $100 from link ads.

If those figures can’t be considered significant, then I don’t know how much is enough. A regular month’s salary perhaps?

Tekatex… Is this like saying mall tenants don’t make money; only the mall owner makes money? That bloggers blogging *in* the long tail don’t make money; only Google makes money *on* the long tail?

Maybe to bloggers in other countries it is, a few hundreds of dollars a month may not be enough for them to call it as “making money”.. but here in Pinas, those few bucks can already be considered as decent earnings.

That means, only Yuga is making money. Hm.

Being in the long tail is a huge money making opportunity! That’s why us bloggers are always looking for the right niche. What is a niche after all? It’s part of the long tail! It’s a highly specialized focus for a blog or website. A good niche that is outside the mainstream can mean that you have few, if any competitors! That is when you can write long tail eBooks and such and market them. You will rank highly in search engines too for your keywords, because of the fact that there are not many others in your niche (that’s the definition of the long tail, right?).

Anybody who honestly says that money cannot be made by bloggers in the long tail just hasn’t spent enough time looking for the earning opportunities.

@itot…. good for you. my site only making less than $1 a day on Adbrite. the site didn’t approve for Adsense. i am planning to open Google Adsense revenue sharing on the site but still checking if the site didn’t violate any big “G” policy on this. i am taking a second thought of marketing the site after working on many features and changes. it is digg-like site for pinoy and not-pinoy. yugatech blog has a lot of entry on the site…. you may want to check it out.
