Globe WiMax tops at 8Mbps uncapped

Listen to article

While the fastest option/plan currently available on Globe WiMax is only up to 1Mbps, the network can actually deliver real-world speeds of up to 8Mbps. We did the test yesterday with an uncapped WiMax connection at GreenHills, San Juan.

globe wimax

SpeedTest detected a maximum connection speed of 8.27Mbps download and 2.58Mbps upload. But again, this is the uncapped connection. You’ll get between 384Kbps to 1Mbps when you’re on a regular WiMax plan.

I’m still pretty curious with WiMax so I’ve applied for a regular 1Mbps subscription to see how it fares here in my area in Makati. Anybody else out there who have tried Globe WiMax? What’s your experience so far?

we have a wimax plan. it was slow at first on the 1st 2 weeks. then i think i reported it to globe and suddennly bumilis. pero the last few days bumagal ng sobrang bagal at nagkaka DNS Error pa kame. Hays! Nakakainis kasi it severely affected my online jobs.

Subscriber of Globe Wi-max..Mine’s ok at first 3 weeks.. i get 1.02mbps on the speedtest but 3 days ago until now i only get half of it.. why? does this mean globe is capping my speed? it’s unfair.

I have my wimax test kit from witribe, actually i borrowed the test kit from a friend who is a witribe agent. So far, it has proven na worth a try itong offer nila. By the way, i’m in bulacan. I got at least 2 bars of signal strength. He said, once the base station near us is completed, the bar strength will be at full capacity. He also said na they want feedback from customers like us. Para mapagusapan raw nila from the higher up yun concerns ng mga users. By the way, they are implementing a 3 GB cap/month, once you hit that cap, it automatically throttles down to 512 kbps. offpeak naman daw from 1 to 7 am, you got the 1 mbps you paid for. They said its for the good of the ‘masa’ which means yung nakakarami. I said, my concern is pano kung heavy user ka, they said, its the one thing their going to discuss with the higher up. Siguro, if your willing to pay the PESOSES to get the broadband you like, you get what you paid for, right? They said right.

For now that 4G is not yet available…I’ll stick with my openline Huawei E1550 prepaid
Area: Zabarte Rd., Caloocan City
Ranking the three telcos:

#1: Sun Broadband Wireless
5 bars signal; reaching 1.68mbps (12mn)
200-600kbps (10am-6pm)
Problem: 6pm to 12mn (0.00 to 11kbps) sucks!
As of this time: 78kbps
Naka-20x report na yata ako sa hotline but still no improvement pag gabi…dami sigurong gumagamit
Tipid: 50php/1 day unlimited or 25php for 3 hrs. (i25 package)

#2: SmartBro Prepaid
1 to 2 bars (Morning)
Deadspot at night (I have no idea what causes this thing)
Speed: 100kbps-400kbps
Mahal 10php for 30 minutes (may per minute prepaid plan na sila ngayon)

#3 Globe Broadband Prepaid
Mahal 5php/15 minutes

Sun is the 3.5G winner…
Hoping for a better telco to offer broadband services…

Sana makapagroll-out agad ang Globe at Liberty Telecom ng WIMAX…

correction to some: WIMAX is 4G.. There’s two competing technology for 4G today.. which is WIMAX n LTE ..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3GPP_long_term_evolution

btw.. Smart LTE recent test is not “officially 4G” yet. they called it 3.9G coz it doesn’t meet the 4G LTE stndard yet.. maybe by the time they implement it soon, it will be officially 4G.

the question arise is why Globe WIMAX is so unreliable?? Are their equipment is “wimax certified”??? my opinion is they hastily installed the Wimax towers too few and causes customer saturation as usual with too small capacities….this could be the reason why they capped the speed at pathetic 1mpbs..

I think this question goes back also to 3G/3.5G HSDPA.. —->>> why Globe, Smart, Suncell 3G/3.5G unreliable??? Answer is saturated customer with not enough bandwidth capacities. I noticed that this unreliablity is only happening here in the Philippines (don’t know about other 3rd world countries) when compared to other Western Countries…

now what we consumers should ask with these fat 3 companies are 80/80 Quality of Service. Meaning getting 80% of published speed at 80% of the time. ie. 80% of 2.0 is 1.6mbps.. our speed should be atleast 80% of that speed all the time continously when we needed it..

hope this help…

If globe doesnt improve, it will be overrrun by smart LTE

AFAIK LTE/3.9g is more attractive to telcos because of commnality in the hardware. So its easy to do a minor upgrade to a cellsite so it becomes LTE/3.9g.

If you are considering a broadband connection and a wired option is available sa area nyo mas ok pa din yun kesa wireless.

Another thing to consider is that wireless connections have high latency values.

That’s right WIMAX is not 4G. Supposedly WIMAX should dominate as far as “last mile” is concerned over 3G/HSDPA and DSL. Perhaps, Globe still not rolling-out enough infrastructure because it’s still new technology and still uncertain whether it is future proof technology considering 4G technology is on the horizon. Actually, 4G is available in some U.S. states.

berkano · 17 years ago

Well whether it is tested or theoretical, capped or uncapped, Wimax right now is unrealiable here in Cebu. Besides, the fact that Speedtest.net can give that numbers does not mean that it will 8 Mbps EVERYTIME.

@RJ Wimax is not 4G. It is the same as what Smart did when they labeled their Fixed wireless internet Smart Wifi.In fact Wimax would be closer to Wifi than 3G.

In the end its like Globe is using a tool they hated a few moon cycles ago just because it makes them look good. If the numbers are so reliable why don’t they use the same test they use to counter Smart’s claim?

@Andrew: according to what I gather from the rep in the nearest Globe center, WiMax is different because it is 4G. So I think it is much better compared to 3G.

Called them a few months back and they said “stop selling” daw ang status ng wimax. Dont know the reason why they advertise and say its not available. According to their ad, Carmona is included in their servicable areas.

@wha – yes, it’s available in Nueva Ecija.

@RJ – that specific account was uncapped by Engineers from Globe. If you’re a regular sub, you are capped to your plan.

@JM @dan – I was the one (not Globe) who used SpeedTest for my sample shots. I thought it’s the most familiar tool to everyone.
