@Daniel:

I have already made all the right tweaks to my uTorrent (limiting download & upload speed, opening ports to make the light green), etc. but Sky Broadband's maximum speed is still pathetic: 50-70kb/s on a well-seeded torrent. (The location of this connection is Bel-Air, Makati.) On the other hand, our Globe office connection (in Palanan, Makati) simply rocks, with download speeds of 220+ kb/s.

I'm thinking location plays a role. What's your location? How about the rest of the posters here?

I don't think there's any major breakthrough internet infrastructure in the Philippines and I don't think there will be any time soon at the rate we're going.

I'm currently in the 12mbps (supposedly the pride and joy of SkyBroadband) 15 day trial, and amazingly my Globe 2mbps plan is still 2x faster. I called their support hotline and explained my issue to the arrogant agent, and guess what, he explained to me that these speeds can only be attained via local servers!!! (eg. if you perform speed tests with servers in metro manila).

If you actually get to access the international servers (which so happen to host ALMOST ALL of the websites we visit), then their 12mbps will be reduced to around 1.5mpbs -2mbps. What a complete JOKE

And to add, the agent can't even give me a "minimum" speed. (eg. lowest possible speed that must be attained, or else it will already be considered an issue that must be reported). So you can't really blame them if your speed goes down to around 1mbps (provided your in 6 or 12 mpbs plan) Unlike PLDT or Globe, which will assure a 70% constant speed.

In summary, the lower plans might work for some of you, but given the marketing lies and the arrogance of their customer service agents I won't even think of considering to pursue their service.

Too bad, I would have really wanted a REAL 12mpbs connection.

I have tried PLDT 2MB, Bayantel 2MB and sky 3MB.
The 3 packages have almost the same price.
Sky is quite more stable where I'm living. The service is stable and up most of the time.
About the shared broadband thing between DSL and cable, I experienced more that issue with Bayantel and not with sky. After I agree on peak hours I can feel the global load, but who doesn't.
What you have to keep in mind, because of the poor peering partnership of the telco companies here, access international website always sucks.
I still download content at an average of 2.5MB with a download accelerator and 1+MB with torrent depending on the seeds.

The most complain I have is the upload which sucks for all telco here.

We're far from the 20MB/1MB usual and cheap in Europe. They're starting to switch for residential optical fibers .... so maybe in 10y in PH lol

Hmm, I've been using PLDT myDSL for almost 2 yrs. We had are ups and downs. Since matagal na kamiing Sky Cable subscriber, itatry ko yung 15 day free trial.

Sa PLDT ala ako prob sa torrents, gaming and browsing. Kaya lang ang baba nga speed ko ung plan 990 lang which is 384 kbps ( but the good thing is, i've been getting upto 50kbps download speed sa torrents and kaapag naka-internet download manager ako.)

Kapag pumalya sa torrent at gaming tong sky broadband, pagtyatyagaan ko na lang si PLDT.

Okay okay okay...

I've read almost all of the comments here and will confirm some facts, based on experience:

1.) Day-time (or PEAK HOURS) will offer you anywhere from 40 - 75% of your DOWN/UP speeds

2.) ONLINE GAMING:

Garena Room affiliation shifts from BAYANTEL to PLDT rooms every 3-4 months or so.

No problem in accessing INTERNATIONAL SERVERS

VERY STABLE CONNECTION: Up time is @ 97% for me. NO DISCONNECTS due to connection stability. The 3% disconnects is due to ANNOUNCED downtimes or some other ISPs ineptly messing around with the cables/connections in my building.

3.) TORRENTS

Off hour connections may overclock your subscription speed.

Sometimes, I go upto 250 KB/s as opposed to the supposed "max" speed 187.5 KB/s for my 1.5mbps connection.

Slow torrent speeds is due to either your UPLOAD SPEED is TOO HIGH or SWARM SPEED is SLOW. Either way, it's on the fault of the settings of your torrent program.

TORRENT PROGRAMS ARE NOT NATIVE PROGRAMS THAT "ADAPTS" ITSELF TO YOUR SETTINGS. AND SINCE SKY BROADBAND IS A CABLE INTERNET <> A DSL (DIRECT SERVICE LINE), YOU NEED TO TWEAK YOUR TORRENT PROGRAM ACCORDINGLY...

Besides, there is NO INTERNET SERVICE in the world that GIVES the FULL QUOTED CONNECTION SPEED, especially during PEAK HOURS.

4.) Downloading from Megaupload/Rapideshare/etc.

Forget about it. 95% of the time, it will tell you that your IP is being used by someone else. This is due to the fact that your IP is NOT UNIQUE TO YOURSELF and is being used by MOST ALL THE SUBSCRIBERS IN YOUR AREA.

I am not sure if it's the whole region/country, but all I know is it's not uniquely yours.

5.) ROUTERS/WIRELESS

WILL <> WORK UNLESS YOU CALL YOUR TECH SUPPORT AND ASK THEM ABOUT YOUR:

STATIC IP ADDRESS
including: NETWORK MASK & GATEWAY

ALSO, YOU MAY NEED TO SET UP A SPECIAL SETTING SO THAT YOUR ROUTER and MODEM CAN COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER THROUGH THEIR MAC ADDRESSES

-----------------------------

Basically, most of the problems about SKY Broadband STEMS FROM THE FACT THAT

IT IS CABLE INTERNET

WHEREIN, YOU DO NOT GET:
1.) PPPoE ... thereby you don't get ->
2.) Unique IP

If you don't know the jargon... well, google it...

I myself have had no MAJOR problems with Sky and will continue with their service in the future.

OH, BTW... Globe sucks, PERIOD.

Has anybody heard of Digitel BIDA in Bulacan?

Is Digitel DSL good enough in our area? I am skeptical of switching to another ISP so I am still with PLDT myDSL which is fairly good. However, I am craving for more speed for the value of money I am paying.

Sky's hotline says they don't cap torrent speeds, but I wonder if that's true: my measly 512kbps PLDT MyDSL connection gets 50+KB/s on the same torrents, so...

It goes without saying that the Philippine regulatators are totally without an ounce of pride in them nor the ISP's. They rather bury their head under the sand than address this shortcoming. Nakakahiya talaga sila at di magbabago ang sitwasyon na to kasi hangga't maaari these providers will keep on doing this until they bleed the customers dry. Total wala namang pakialam ang gobyerno eh "kumita na lang ng husto" bahala na kung walang serbisyo.
