To be honest I have never read their FAQ - the details I quoted come from one of the directors of Netcraft. All I can say is there must be a lot of people using the Netcraft toolbar :-) Personally I don't know anyone who does - same as Alexa.

As none of the Philippines news sites are anywhere near the top 100 Netcraft sites perhaps the criteria is different - I will ask Netcraft about those in the lower rankings. We use the Netcraft Dedicated Server Monitoring for the Balita server.

If as you think Netcraft use the toolbar then it would seem more popular than the Alexa toolbar. 3 months ago I knew how many Netcraft toolbars had been downloaded but Alexa will not give that information.

Balita provides phishing site details for the toolbar and has done for some time .... but we do not use nor have we ever seen it, only in the jpegs on their site.

Marites,

According to the Netcraft FAQ:

How do we find out the Most Visited Web Sites?

Domains visited by the Toolbar community are collected anonymously and used to produce a list of the top 100 most visited websites. These rankings depict an accurate view of the most popular web sites viewed by users of the Netcraft Toolbar.

I don't see anywhere else in their FAQ that they use other methods to derive the rankings.

Alexa rankings are based solely on users of Internet Explorer with the Alexa toolbar.

Netcraft ranking are not based on toolbar usage. I originally compliled list for PNA (with assistance from Netcraft) and many in the advertising indistry say the Netcraft ranking are the more accurate as they are complied using search engine data across all operating systems, PC, Mac and Linux which Alexa is not. I also understand Netcraft use proprietry methods in the complitation of the rankings. Your assumption that it is complied from usage of the Netcraft toolbar is therefore incorrect. The Netcraft toolbar whilst showing the rankings for the site visited is a security toolbar to warn users of phishing and fraudulent sites, unlike the Alexa toolbar it does not contain any type of spyware.

As with any ranking list it cannot be 100% accurate but certainly I would take it as a more accurate 'snapshot' of a sites performance if only for the reason it is compliled using all platforms rather than just one browser on one platform.

It is also easy to cheat the Alexa rankings by using one of the widely available Alexa boosters.
