Jollibee taps into NFC-touting HappyPlus Card

Jollibee (and other sister companies) is riding into the NFC craze (near-field communication) with the introduction of an NFC-powered privilege card called HappyPlus.

The HappyPlus Card is basically a reloadable debit card powered by an NFC chip.

To get a better understanding on how it works, here’s a YouTube video of their upcoming commercial.

The reloadable card works with Jollibee, Chowking, Greenwich, Red Ribbon and Mang Inasal. Each card costs Php100 and you load it with any amount in any of fastfood branches mentioned.

Will this fly? Not sure if the market of Jollibee is this tech-savvy. What do you guys think? Will you get one of these when they come out on January 23?

If you get 1 point for every 50-peso purchase, you’ll need to spend PHP 5,000 para mabawi mo yung 100 pesos na fee ng card (PHP 5,000 = 100 points).

Hopefully pag na-reach mo yung 5,00 di pa expired yung car. :D

That is better for Jolibee Group of Companies and good for the eating public.

It will fly 1000% if they will not charge for the cost of the card.

The savings they get on faster transaction turn-around and solving their perennial loose-change problem already paid for their investment in NFC software/hardware.

Do the math: 100,000 cards is P10,000,000

SM Advantage is giving you 1 point for every 100 peso you purchase. Suki Card is giving you 1 point for every 200 pesos you purchase.

JFC is giving you 1 point for every 50 pesos. And it is computing you the equivalent points for every peso you are using on the card. Unlike the other 2 cards mentioned above.

try na. it does not harm using the card to earn points. sometimes you do not have enough cash, you can use the card to purchase using your points.

SOme are asking why bakit hindi na lang debit or credit cards ang puedeng gamitin? Example, if you are buying 45 pesos of goods, papayag ba ang stores to use your debit and credit cards? No. mahal kase sa stores yun.

the key word is cashless, loyalty for micropayments. This is an alternative to using coins. Sa coins you seldom get an exact change. sa NFC card, you are paying the exact amount. kUng mauso ang 3.99 , you will be paying 3.99.

with the loyalty program of JFC Happy PLus, sulit sulit na. Try. and compare. the points are worth earning.

Nevermind earning points, basta dapat all fastfood chain uses one card for convinient. Then the same card for department stores, drug stores and supermarkets. Sana even sa jeep bus and mrt lrt stations. Like octopus card ng hk.

In my opinion, the card will be a good alternative to the Gift Certificate.
Usage of the card is very easy. I saw my friend using this card already, one tap and its done.

If this project succeed, the same machines can basically accept the tap-based credit/debit cards like MC paypass. :D

Excited na ako rito. Gusto ko ang cashless transactions. Ginagamit ko rin online payment nila. With this new card, mapapabilis ang transaction kasi di na maghihingian ng barya. Sana nga mag-expand sa ibang companies kahit di part ng Jollibee group. :)

I agree with you, Red Ribbon/Tokyo Tokyo w/c are also own by Jolibee Food Corporation are already equipped with credit card terminal. Leaving Behind are Greenwich and Jolibee.
This Happy Plus Card will definitely fail

You’ll earn points and have a chance to win some prizes. So kung regular customer ka ng Jollibee and the sisters companies it wont hurt you to have one. Just treat it as a loyalty card that keeps your budget for your fast food needs.

the good thing about this is as long as they are using the standards for NFC then maybe months from now when people are using NFC capable phones we wont have a use for a wallet anymore jk :)

Here in Japan we’ve got one of the most developed contactless card payment ecosystems in the world. The winners learned that it is 99% breadth of deployment that determines whether you succeed in the market. A card that works only at a few stores is bound to fail. No one really wants to leave money in a contactless card wallet that is only going to be used sporadicly.

The leader in the market here is the systems run by the train companies, which let you pay for nearly every form of mass transportation (train, subway, bus, lrt) as well as most convenience stores.

The number two has almost universal penetration at convenience stores as well as most vending machines as well as supporting direct peer to peer transactions.

Is Jollibee (Tony Tancaktiong) the founder of this card? Or just another company that tied up with Jollibee? I guess this card would have a bigger impact if it could get SM group to accept it but then again, SM’sown BDO group might have plans of its own. This is big business if it takes off. The card company might take say 1/2 of 1 percent for each transaction, that would be millions or more if enough people use it…

this cant be that good if you can’t use it on all sm malls nationwide, but first BPI and BDO must unite for this one eh? many have tried this system in the mrt’s but people still think the card is just extra gastos since it does’nt have the last amount ride of the prepaid ones. Same thing here, if this card has limited power only at JFC stores only then its that simple reason this is just a loyalty card that you have to earn the points first to equal the amount that cost you to buy the card to feel it’s value. but then again this only applies to JFC loyalist only. If we can get this card for free it can be worth it. but competition here is so healthy, why should you just eat on JFC stores? a question that’ll bother you after you bought the card, we’re talkin about food here not clothes, come on man.

nfc is the future wallet. wallet will be extinct soon. nfc chips can store cahs values, identification (driver’s license, sss card, philhealth card, etc…) this is the future. imagine bringing only a cellphone, and everything is already there. you can even pass cash values from one nfc enabled phone to another. or even buy movie tickets, hotel reservations, plane ticket online for 1, 2, or more, then pass the eticket to your buddy when you meet them at the mall or elsewhere. this is a great technology, and im betting that in 2 to 3 years time, this technology will be commonly used.

Fail for me, if this is mall wide accessible like SM Malls then it would be a better hit.

This is similar to the Globe G-Pass in MRT’s, not all MRT stations have reloading stations so it eventually went bankrupt and penta capital bought it and its still a fail.

If they offer exclusive discounts in meals then I would buy this, kinda like the Palm Card of Pizza Hut.

it may not be practical for you but for others it will be very useful, an example would be if you have a son/daughter and you only want to spend his/her money only food, because these days they spent it on something else, this will be a good controlled way to budget their food allowance since they cannot spend it on other stuffs

@Anonymous – Nasobrahan naman ata sa pagka”imaginary” yung imaginary situation mo. Pati takbo ng isip mo, di na rin practical. Sa real life, walang magulang na ang ibibigay lamang na pera sa anak ay para sa pagkain. Meron at meron pa ring ibang bagay na pagkakagastusan ng anak.

Abala lang yang card card na yan. Dapat, tumanggap na lang sila ng ATM/Debit Card/Credit Card. Isipin mo na lang kung anong magiging itsura ng wallet at bulsa mo kung ang lahat ng business establishment na pupuntahan mo ay may sariling “exclusive card.”

Kung gusto ninyo ng NFC chip, iderekta nyo na sa isang card or gadget na people do commonly use. Yung tipong Juan for all and all for Juan. Dadami lang basura dito sa Pilipinas dahil sa mga plastic card na yan. Besides, ang market ng Jollibee ay hindi yung mga super rich people na mahilig sa exclusivity. Mas malaki pa rin sa kinikita ng Jolibee ay galing sa masa na walang hilig sa mga ganyang card card na yan.

Sa tingin ko, this is not a first step towards having a system like the NETS in Singapore. Any “exclusive card” defeats the purpose of having a NETS-like system. This is just another one of those “Suki or Loyalty Cards” out there.

I will have more freedom and power to choose what to buy and eat with a 100 peso bill than with a Card like this that has a 100 peso load or deposit on it.

If a card or a sytem can offer me the same freedom and power that I have with the 100 peso bill, then I’m sold for it. But if not, punta na lang tayo sa Balintawak at saka natin pagpupunitin yung mga card na yan. Walang kwenta! Ahaha!

Cool. We just talked about this form of payment (cashless transactions) a while ago in my econ class.

Based on what I learned, I don’t think this is just kaartehan or just another gift card. Cashless transactions actually have its benefits like the convenience of not bringing lots of money especially coins, faster transactions, exact change, and less dekwat of money from the cashiers to the benefit of the company.

I think the main problem is the “exclusivity” of the card like the comment somewhere above. But that’s not the problem of JFC anymore. Problem na ata yan ng government to implement such a thing like yung sa Singapore. But shheeesh, the government can’t even make a unified identification card, more so a financial card? lol.

Hmm… why create yet another “card” line? We should be tapping on existing ones instead of doing it independently. *sigh*

Right now:
1) I don’t see why I should add another card in my wallet
2) I don’t see any value in it – what for when I have cash? Why not accept existing cards like ATMs, Debit cards, and Credit Cards? What makes it special? Privileges? Discounts? Freebies? And if there will be freebies, it should be worth it.
3) I don’t see any long term use for it either – It’s not like I’ll eat on JFC chains only every day of my life. Sooner or later, no matter how much of a JFC fan I am, I’ll crave for other food.

Again, they should have tapped existing ones. Speaking of that, what happened to Mondex Philippines anyway? Mondex is my choice in this area.

The keyword is the “NFC Chip”. Existing credit cards or Debit cards are currently noncompliant.

I guess this will grow to more stores or establishment because another card is a hassle…

@NFC My point was, it’s a card exclusive to JFC = another card to add in our already card filled wallets. Regardless of technology, it is better to create or develop a non-exclusive card.

I am not talking or against the “NFC Chip”, I am reacting to “yet another exclusive card”. Finally, I was answering the article: “Will this fly? Not sure if the market of Jollibee is this tech-savvy. What do you guys think? Will you get one of these when they come our in January 23?”

It was offered to me earlier in Chowking. So far they haven’t convinced me to get one. Again, regardless of the technology, an exclusive card is just another card.

though not advertised yet i’ll give you some insider info about this card:

– Every Php50.00 spent = 1 point
– 1 point = 1 Php
– Monthly Raffle Draws of Php20,000
– Other freebies and promotions
– Jollibee being an influential company is now already in the talks with other companies to tie-up with their card, one company i can early say though not yet final is JAC Liner Bus Company

Agree with Cesar this is a first step sana magtuloy-tuloy at magkaroon na din ang pinas ng kagaya sa NETS ng SG puro card swipe lang ang payment kahit sa mga maliliit na stalls, bus at mrt.
