LG makes Multi-Touch Display for Apple iPad

Listen to article

During our line tour of LG Display at the Paju LCD Factory, an LG liaison reveals that they’re the ones that provide Apple with the multi-touch screen for the upcoming iPad.

In this video demo of LG’s multi-touch display screen using a technology called IPS (In-Plane Switching). LG has been supplying this type of display for the Apple iMac so it’s not a surprise they’re doing the same for the iPad.

When pressed how many display panels they were making for Apple’s iPad, an LG General Manager would not disclose but says its a lot. They also would not comment if they’re going to do their own tablet with Android OS in it.

There were several other display types shown to us in the gallery, including this 10.1-inch free-form display which could be used for the car’s dash panel.

Some LED displays can be framed into the wall making it a digital painting of sorts.

LG is also developing their own A4-size (11.5″ EPD) color flexible e-paper. The panel is just 0.3mm thin.

The flexible display looks cool and LG is hoping to perfect them and get them out by 2011.

@zick, FYI (on the panel side of things) the largest producer of panels is Samsung (S-PVA) and the second is LG (S-IPS). Of course they are not the only ones (CMO, AUO, etc). Not Apple, HP, Dell, etc (even professional Dell monitors make use of LG S-IPS panels). Sony even used to licensed Samsung S-PVA panels. Not sure about that now though.

And yes, as per Erin too.

They’re the culprits of the yellow-tint LCDs on the iMac as well.

@Andre Marcelo-Tanner
ideally that would be the case… but the software that’s running the touch screen and how it would react or function still plays a big part in the performance of the screen…

I they make it, does that mean LG’s touch screen devices are just as good as the touch screen of the IPad?

@zick, they just do the conceptual and technical design then outsource everything else. globalization and capitalism at its finest.
