i am still on the fence about whether to get a kindle 3 or the nook. i love the look of the nook but am apprehensive on whether it will work here in the philippines. i’m trying to read some reviews to help me decide so any help would be appreciated

1. have your friend/relative buy it for you in the US (50% cheaper than in the Philippines) AND ask them to register it for you as well while on US soil because you won’t be able to register it in the Philippines (unless you mask your IP or something) AND ask them to buy you a cover/case/sleeve as well because you will have a very very tough time scouring the metro for a cover that will fit

2. mine came with a $50 B&N ebooks gift card BUT again, you need to have a US address to use it so I’m planning on asking someone in the US to use it up for me (you can ask that same person buying it for you to go all out and buy all the books you want while in the US (the plus with the 3g thing is that you won’t have to hardwire the ebooks via a PC — it can go straight from the B&N webstore to your nook — not really a big deal if you’re a fan of free ebooks )

3. the 3g thing won’t work in the Philippines but if you vacation in the US, you’ll be able to use it there — and apparently you can go in a B&N store there and read ebooks for free (sana may branch sila dito lol!)

4. it comes with wifi and a beta web browser which is good enough for accessing twitter or click the city for movie schedules sa mccafe

5. i like the way it feels on your hands, very sturdy – rubber yung back – super plus

6. the e-ink thing is FTW! easy to read, not stressing to the eyes, imagine reading a book with the whitest sheet of paper and blackest ink

7. all in all it roughly translates to php12K – very good hardware, android OS (i here some dev folks are building apps for the nook already), very good screen – e-ink and no glare, and wifi (you just miss out on the at&t 3g and B&N extra perks but who cares if you’re in Manila lol!) top problem i’m seeing in the near future: how will i update the system since i haven’t registered it yet…oh well.

The name of the store that sells it in Market Market is Info Maxx. Saw them selling the Nook for 27k which is too much though. I bought one from the US for only around 12k and was able to get a promo rate for the accessories. It is a pretty device against the Kindle and I would rather have it against the Ipad because it has an anti-glare feature. It is lightweight and weighs around the weight of an actual book or even less.

Now the Bad the news.

I had to return the unit immediately because I found out that you wont be able to buy an ebook from B&N if you are outside the United States territories.It has something to do with copyright issues which I found weird since there is an international treaty on the duty free access of books and the Philippines is signatory to it. I guess Barnes and Noble’s researchers dont know this. I learned this tiny detail when I spoke with the customer service personnel over the phone while I was upgrading the OS. I already accepted that I wont be able to use the 3G feature but B&N blocks the IP addresses located outside the US even if you are on wifi. Its no different from your Iphone or Touch, or any other device. In fact the other devices are better because you can buy from Amazon.

The Kindle on the other hand is usable in PH and apparently the 3G connection for you to use to download the books from Amazon is free of charge.

The Nook is a better device though than the Kindle. B&N has ebooks that you usually buy for 8 bucks that you can only 2 bucks from B&N.

Its useless to comment on gadgets like these if all you’re going to do is just, well, comment on them and not give the most important information: WHERE IS IT AVAILABLE LOCALLY?

I’ve counted 7 questions pertaining to where it is available locally, but this thread rambles on and on about “check this out, this one’s better”. Well my lolo is better than your lolo. So quit with the electronic peeing contest and tell us where to buy these!
