Sony unveils new wireless e-Book Readers

Listen to article

This is not the first time Sony introduced an eBook reader in the market but because of the Amazon Kindle’s relative success in the US, the Japanese company is putting back its weight in.

Three e-book readers were announced earlier today (although one is still labeled coming soon).

The smallest one (the Pocket Edition) has a 5-inch display with 512MB of internal memory and weighs just over 200grams. It can virtually carry 7,500 pages of e-books and has a price of $199.

The Touch Edition has a display screen of 6 inches, still 512MB of internal memory but can be expanded with a Memory Stick Pro Duo SD card. It also sports a touchscreen, audio player and picture viewer. Weighs about 280 grams and costs $299.

The 3rd one, to be released later in the year is the Reader Daily Edition — a 7-inch screen with 3G wireless and to cost $399.

The Kindle and Kindle DX has some pretty good competition now.

I have the Sony PRS-650 version. It’s the one labeled here as the “Touch Edition.” I’ve been using the product for more than a month now, and so far, I am very pleased with it. For 10k, it’s not a bad investment. :)

@lailai,
yes you will able to do that. I use Calibre to connect my pc to my Reader.
You can download a bunch of free ebooks from Project Guttenburg. Calibre already has a built-in conversion program that lets you convert from almost anything to the typically used EPUB format of the Reader.
This is a nice way to catch up with the classics. I sometimes Pdf my assignments and notes for reviewing when i’m too tired or lazy to carry a bunch of paper in my bag.
Anyway, I really have stellar recommendations on this device. Satisfied 100% Its worth the Php 25,000 i paid for it.

I own the Touch Edition. I was also searching for the Sony Reader, ever since they released the older model(the 505). I think this is not available in the Philippines yet and I think it won’t be available in the near future. Something about Sony selling it to certain regions only. I bought mine in UK, a week after it was first released.

The difference in reading experience between a PDA and this device is astonishing. I own a HP 6828 for a couple of years now and its always frustrating to run out of battery before I even finish reading a book. The Touch is said to have enough juice to let you finish 7000 page turns of reading. (Haven’t tested this yet though)

@ederic The difference between reading on a PDA and reading on one of these readers is like night and day. Interesting to see if local legal textbooks can be adapted to fit eBook readers.

Hmmm. There’s an idea.

I’m glad that there are new devices that will make people read more. Not too interested, though, as I can read hundreds of ebooks on my Palm Centro’s eReader application.

Natawa ako nung sinabing non-working prototype lang pala yung ginamit sa presscon ng sony. Kaya pala ayaw pahawakan sa media. Haha!

@August – yup, you need a USB cable to connect and update. This time, you can update them via wireless/3G. As for the Amazon Kindle, it’s via EvDO.
