Unboxing: Asus Eee PC

For a couple of months now that the Asus EeePC has been available in the local market, I haven’t got the chance to get myself one. Either there’s no available stock or the remaining lone unit is priced way more than the SRP. My only luck was with Asus Philippines lending me a review unit.

Three visits to Mall of Asia, two at Park Square/Glorietta and another two visit at Virramall, Greenhills in the last 2 months and still nothing. The only store that had a unit left was selling it in excess of Php21,000 and I don’t want to bow down to that amount.

So while I await the stores to restock themselves with brand new unit, we’ll put this one on the stress test and see how it compares to the regular laptop.

We’ll be looking at relative size, actual battery life and performance benchmarks, among others.

Since the selling point of the Asus Eee PC is its affordability and very small form factor, we’ll put it on road test and see if it can take a beating. Watch out for this in a week or so.

    I have enough money to buy one, but what I’m really saving up for is my very 1st DLSR camera. :D

    I’m a bit tempted to get one because I can get it for only $299. However, it would be impractical for me coz I don’t really have the need for it. I don’t travel that much and I feel that it’s too small for me. Btw, what model did you get? Is it 2G or 4G?

    What version did they lend to you 2,4 or an 8Gb?

    I want to see the Windows Version of that… hehehe

    I actually got a chance to tinker with one. A friend asked me to update the skype so she could use the video calls.

    Anyway, I think it’s a good buy at $299. For the Php18,000 local price, I think it’s a bit steep.

    The size and design is OK but I find the screen too small. I also dislike the fact that I can’t do a right-click on it since there is nothing to click in the first place. It only has a touchpad unlike typical laptops. I don’t know if it can support USB mouse.

    Overall, it’s a nice laptop for web browsing and doing some light office applications. I think it’s an ideal “first laptop” for students.

    @andre - know a lot of travel bloggers using the Eee PC as primary laptop.

    @jaypee - got the a white and a black 4GB model.

    @vance - they sent me the white 4GB model. The 8G is not yet available daw.

    Talaga po bang Php 18,500 ang average na price niyan? From $300, which is Php 12,000, naging Php 18k something, bakit ganun? Ganun ba talaga kalaki yung tax na pinapatong?

    Welcome to the club!

  18. Gravatar Icon yuga replied on Feb 11th, 2008 at 1:40 am (18)

    @maruel - importation tax, value added tax, excise tax all a whole lot of taxes.

    @ade - thanks! thanks!

    abe, kasama na ata yan eh sa presyo. Sa U.S. ba walang tariff?

  20. Gravatar Icon Maruel replied on Feb 11th, 2008 at 6:03 am (20)

    @yuga… Dami pala, hehe! :) Lahat kasi ng napagtanungan ko kahapon sa cyberzone sa sm north eh ganun ang presyo.

    May lalabas bang windows version nun?

  21. Gravatar Icon Ade replied on Feb 11th, 2008 at 1:51 pm (21)

    I just realized that a machead friend of mine said “Welcome to the club” to me when I first got an iPod. It’s official: the Eee is the new iPod.

  22. Gravatar Icon yuga replied on Feb 11th, 2008 at 2:13 pm (22)

    @brianb - mas mataas tariff saten. as in as in way higher and patong-patong pa.

    @maruel - there are instructions online on ho to switch to XP. Will do that on one of my Eee PC. You need to own your own XP license though.

    @ade - haha! E3PC is the new iPod nga! That’s what the guys at the shop where I bought it tells me — everyone will have their own Eee PC one days since they cost as much as a mobile phone lang.

  23. Gravatar Icon vance replied on Feb 11th, 2008 at 3:20 pm (23)

    @abe oh cool. Wala pa palang 8Gb sa distro nila. I find that weird kasi may I think one shop in Virramall sold an 8Gb version a few weeks ago for almost 30K. Maybe out of stock hehe.

    ———————————–
    Whats nice about the Asus EEE is that you don’t need to be a Linux expert or have used linux before because the Linux OS in it is just plain easy to use.
    ———————————-

    4Gb is being sold at PC Corner for 17-18K last year.

    @maruel I think 300USD x 50PHP parin hehehe hindi 40PHP hehe.

    @ Lyle, RN - there is a “right click” even though there you only see one button. it actually has two buttons underneath.

    Looking forward to your review. They say they’re going to come up with a more polished version in a few months (less energy usage, more memory and some “bug fixes”) so I’m holding off buying one til then. I also wonder how this compares to the Everex cloudbook?
