Globe WiMax Internet is here!

Just got an SMS confirmation from Globe that they’ve already rolled out and servicing customers on their WiMax network. I’m still getting the details but the Inquirer ran the story last night that it will be 512Kbps at Php799 per month. This service will certainly be competing against Smart Bro’s Fixed Wireless offering.

Will update this post once I get the copy of the press release. Intel’s timing was just right when we had the WiMax forum yesterday.

Here’s part of the Press Release I got:

Globe is first in the Philippines to launch Wimax. Available starting March 2009, the company’s WIMAX package is a high-speed Internet plan that lets users surf the web at speeds of up to 512kbps for only PHP795 per month. The package also comes with an aggressive money-back guarantee. “We challenge anyone with a competitive wireless subscription to try out our Wimax-backed plans. We are so confident with our service that we challenge you try out our connection, risk-free. Should you be unhappy with the connection within one month from installation, we’ll give you your money-back, no questions asked,” says Menchi Orlina, head of the Consumer Broadband Business Group.

The service is initially available in selected areas in South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Globe will continue to roll-out hundreds of WiMAX sites, as a complement to its existing DSL and 3G internet facilities, to ensure the internet gets to every Filipino who needs it.

Interested households may call (02)919-8888 or visit the nearest Globe Payments and Services centers for further inquiries.

WiMAX is short for Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access. It is a standards-based technology designed to enable the deployment of wireless broadband access as a cost-efficient alternative to cable and DSL; WIMAX also has improved reach and can cover distances greater than those covered by other wireless technologies like WiFi, CDMA, or 3G.

Globe’s network is considered the first and biggest 2.5Ghz WiMAX (802.16e) broadband network in South East Asia.

What is stopping local telecom companies, except Sky Broadband, from offering broadband speeds beyond 3Mbps for residential customers?

do you think telecom firms are afraid that residential customers will just use it for P2P?

is the technology in key cities not capable of handling more bandwidth?

  9. Gravatar Icon blue replied on Mar 27th, 2009 at 7:07 am (9)

if you only pay Php799 per month for an internet connection, a 512Kbps is not bad at all. If you want 1mbps or more, then pay the price.

well, accept it you’re in the Philippines.
we can only hope that these wiMAX tech reach as far as to farmlands and not only to key cities. till now hirap pa ngang makakuha ng 3G signal sa province.

Im sure other competitors will rise and this speed will force to increase in some time.

    @madzman23
wimax was already being tested by intel and current feasibility imo is not at a point where telcos will reap.

I also endured the internet of the 1990s. I’m probably older than you.

I guess once you tried or had 24Mbps on an ADSL2+ connection overseas, 512kbps, which is not even guaranteed is just too slow.

wimax 512kbps, ok na yun! mura naman, if you’re browsing the net, and just watch youtube ok na yun, now I hope they incorporate wimax in cellphone, panalo yun!

  27. Gravatar Icon pong replied on Mar 28th, 2009 at 1:50 pm (27)

if you’re within range of other high-speed “last mile” options, then Globe Wimax is expensive. but if Wimax is the only thing that will reach you, then it’s a good deal.

btw, “last mile” just means “final leg to customer”. it does not mean “the only option”

  28. Gravatar Icon pong replied on Mar 28th, 2009 at 1:58 pm (28)

it also does not mean “the last or best option”. however, Wimax wireless technology just really works on greater distances. and it should have greater bandwidth. so the 512kbps limit is artificial to generate greater profits for those who have no other broadband options

Btw,I would just like to comments on the new Smartbro Plug-In (prepaid) or Plan P1995 just bought from Smart
Wireless Center at Robinsons Galleria. It’s so slow that it took 1.5 – 2 mins. before you get connected. But you are being charge already even you are not yet connected. When you are disconnecting, it also took a minute before you are properly disconnected. The more it becomes slower the better for Smart bcoz we are being charged Php10.00 every 30 or fraction of a 30 mins. Just don’t know if this Plan P1995 will last forever.

-ANG KAYA LANG NG GLOBE WIMAX NAMIN IS HANGGANG ONE TO TWO ACTIVE TABS, HINDI NA NYA KAYANG MAG 3 TABS OR MORE, MOZILLA GAMIT KO.DIBA ANG BAGAL NA NUN? YUNG SMART NAMIN DATI KAYA NYA KAHIT ILANG TABS AT KAHIT ILANG DOWNLOADS PA YAN….

PAANO BA GUMAGANA YANG WIMAX BAKIT ANG BAGAL? MGA 6 KILOMETERS LANG NAMAN ANG LAYO NG GLOBE TOWER SA LOCATION KO TAPOS NASA TAAS PA KAMI,,,,MERON BANG MAY ALAM KUNG BAKIT GANYAN YAN?

512kbps is my plan for P995?
at first i check out the globe site…
nkita ko na lang na 795 lang ung 512kbps…
tpos mas masakit pa eh. ngtry aq mgdownload ng files. EXE 5mb ung file. un a max of 21kbps ang download ko. hayz. sobrang bagal

  52. Gravatar Icon wala_lang replied on Jun 14th, 2009 at 10:06 pm (52)

512kbps, ang bagal. Para lang talaga kumita sila. Hehe. Kasi dapat atleast 1-2 Mbps bigay nila. They’re just over subscribing, for example, instead of 1000+ users per T1 satellite, they divide it into 2000+. Kaya bumabagal connections.

Btw, I think weather has minimal effect on your wimax connection unless may bagyo na talaga, the problem is more with network congestion. I believe Wi-Max is NLOS, non line of sight.

Since last week after installation i am only getting an average of 110kbps DL and 40kbps UL, i reported this several times and still WALANG PAGBABAGO MAS LUMALA PA. Two of their Contractor technician pass by in my house last sunday but still reported globe internal problem. And yesterday they sent me the first bill, which was supposed to be after a month. Minor prob lang ang naencounter namin so far, meron lang un isang araw (not d whole day though) na nawala ung connection as in walang signal sa modem but other than that ok tyaka up to 1mbps ung speed kaya oks na oks. I just need to have my pc checked kasi naghahang sya m sure pc ang may prob hindi ang internet. I called their hotline once, very accomodating ung rep na sumagot.

    ———
try mo baguhin yung ip address ng router mo baka kc parehas ng ip address ung wimax modem at router. kaya ayaw gumana kc complict sa ip.
Ex. 192.168.1.1 change it to 192.168.2.1

just got installed last aug 13 kinuha namin 1mbps, sabi ng contractor sa una daw 512 kbps muna then eventually magiging 1mbps. At first it was very impressive, sa youtube di nagba-buffer then simula na ng kalbaryo…intermittent, slow and minsan no connection at all! kahit pa puno yung signal bars! I’ve tried to contact their hotline at nakakainis pa mga TSR’s nila parang walang masyadong alam. May major cable cut daw because of the earthquake in Japan so ok lang, sa Aug 17 daw ok na so understandable kumbaga. Then came aug 17, walang pinagbago, super bagal talaga…wala nako magagawa may lock in period sila na 1 yr and i have to pay 2.5k for the termination fee!

    chad,

KCUF that!

tumawag kami sa CSR nila friday last last week, (sept. 4). sabi wala naman daw problema sa area namin, magpapa-dala na lang daw ng technician in 2-3 days para tingnan. namuti na mata namin kakahintay, walang dumating. tumawag pa kami ng ilang beses sa CSR (9 more times to be exact).

fast forward to sept.

Hoping na sana tech prob lang talaga that time. Pero add ko lang din, yesterday I checked the connection of smartbro of my friend and it was 700kbps sa speedtest.net, totoo ba kaya ito para di mag switch ang smartbro user sa wimax, goodnews to sa mga subscriber.
