Top IT Companies based on Employee Salaries

GigaOm ran a quick report on the top tech companies is the US based on the average salaries they gave their engineers/developers and Google came out on top. I wonder which tech companies in the Philippines would be on the top 10 if we had the same salary information.

Based on the numerous feedback I get from regular folks in the IT circle, here are my top guesses:

  • A lot of old classmates/schoolmates I heard that were employed to HP fresh from college says they have great salary packages. One fresh grad even got a car loan on his first year.
  • While very few developers could get into Oracle Philippines because of the vertical industry they are in, people say they have very nice compensation package to retain their top employees.
  • Canon Philippines has a ton of engineers and developers here in Manila working some stuff related to cameras, printers and the lot. While the pay is not really very high, developers get a chance to go on special projects in Japan ranging from several months to a couple of years. That’s the time when get the “pay bonus”.
  • IBM Philippines was once considered as the top company to work for and has been competitive salaries and a very mobile workplace environment.
  • Very little is known about Lakeside Technologies but when they put out an ad before looking for web developers, the starting salaries they were offering were very much higher than industry figures. I also had several former officemates and friends who used to work there and they confirmed the handsome pay. However, one commented that is “if you still want to have a personal life“. So okay, they pay you good and work you real hard.
  • Trend Micro, Inc. has a number of top notch antivirus engineers working at their offices in Libis. An old classmate tells me the pay is good but the hours are really bad.
  • HeadStrong Philippines. I used to work there before for several months so I have a fair idea of their compensation structure. However, friends that have recently worked there tells me the pay is good and the benefits are great (though not as great as it was 8 years ago). They have a fleet of private cars which will bring employees home if you work overtime (past 10PM).
  • Novare Technologies. I know a number of top notch engineers/developers (geeks) are working there so the pay must be really good.
  • Smart Communications has been very popular among employees for their extended month bonus. Last December 2006, employees were given up to 21-month bonus. Standard is only 13 months. That’s 8 months more.

Yahoo has just formally opened their office in the Philippines and since they are on GigaOm’s Top 10, they might also be the same here.

There are several other smaller companies that have very attractive compensation packages but I thought they might not be able to scale that once they grow much bigger. If you have some idea which tech companies I should include here, please do leave a comment. The ones I have here aren’t based on hard data so I might have listed some of them wrong too (which brings me, we should do an IT salary survey of sorts here).

    At HP AsiaPac (not sure with HPPC) we got this work-work-work balance thing. Work-life balance is not/seldom applicable to people doing support specially if team manpower is short. Also pay is good is you know how to properly negotiate with HR (reject initial small offer, re-nego :) ). Also all good benefits were removed by the former CEO to buy 3Com and Palm, so dont expect much from this part.

    i’ll go for HP. hindi lahat sa IBM mataas magbigay unless experienced ka at mataas na talaga sweldo mo. also, it really depends sa project na mapupuntahan mo.

    HP? you can have a work-life balance for sure. pay? above average (relative to your current salary).

    @Kyle

    I can’t really make that decision for you since I don’t know much about how things work in HP. But I think it’s important to factor in the quality of life/work-life balance when you’re considering an offer. If you think you can stomach everything I noted in the previous message and what @ex_IBMer said, then by all means go for it.

    Also, the meal allowance is only given to those not in the regular shift, and besides the meal allowance is just minimal. You get Php75 if you’re not on regular shift, and then if you do overtime you get additional on top of Php75 depending on the extra overtime hours worked. The OT has to be approved in order for you to claim for the additional meal allowance.

    @newapplicant – sorry, not really sure what the salary range is for Informatica / BI

    @IBMer

    So,, do you recommend na mag stay nlng ako sa HP, considering na mas mataas ang possible offer sa IBM? sa HP kasi wla nmn kami meal allowance.

    So, which company ka po lumipat?

  12. Avatar for infaaspirant infaaspirant says:

    hi sir/maam

    help naman po. any idea magkano yung salary range ng Informatica for 1.5 years of experience po? anu na po ba market value ng infa ngayon?

    thanks po.

  13. Avatar for newapplicant newapplicant says:

    @IBMerr – any idea magkano yung salary range ng Informatica or BI experienced sa IBM?

  14. Avatar for IBMerr IBMerr says:

    @kyle – not sure regarding the salary for experienced SAP hires, but I would think if you’re an experienced SAP professional you should be commanding more than 50K. Yes there’s night differential, transpo and meal allowance if you’re not on regular shift.

    I don’t know how it is in HP, but I think you’d be better off there. I know someone there who’s doing SAP and that person seems to be really happy and contented.

  15. Avatar for kyle kyle says:

    @IBMerr

    Is it true na at least 50k ang starting sa IBM since they only hire experienced people for SAP positions? May night diff ba? would you prefer working in HP rather than IBM?

    Save yourself the trouble and don’t apply at IBM Solutions Delivery or if you do make sure you double what you’re asking for. Ask as if you’re selling your soul to the devil.

    You work 45 hour weeks, and if they’re trying to hit targets you’re ordered to work more, Saturdays and holidays included. You actually pay for all the leaves and holidays by working the 45 hour week, so VLs, SLs and holidays technically aren’t a benefit since you’re paying for it. Factor that in when you
    you negotiate your salary.

    The internal system is such a mess, you wonder if you’re really in IBM. The stress level for dealing with internal matters is 100x the stress you get from actual work.

    The PBC rating system is so flawed – your manager who doesn’t have the slightest idea what you’re doing (unless you’re in a high profile project) is the one who’s rating you.

    Management thinks they’re employing machines rather than humans. I don’t think they factor in the productivity of people when they ask them to work additional hours. It’s easy for them to tell people to work extra hours because the salary of people is a fixed cost.

    In fairness, the work mobility is really good.

    IBM Solutions Delivery is NOT IBM Philippines.

    APPLICANT BEWARE.

  19. Avatar for ex_IBMer ex_IBMer says:

    Left IBM Solutions Delivery after 4+ yrs. 1%/yr kc ung increase despite high performance ratings in PBC. Lots of friends rin don I know didnt get increase for last 2 yrs. Paliwanag nila na-hit na daw nila ung market rate nila.

    Remote work is excellent though. They dont care kung san ka work as long as online ka sa chat/email. I even attended mettings while at Mcdo or at Starbucks. This is true if you’re working for an internal IBM account project at inde deployed on external clients.

    Managers dont have idea on how an employee perform on the project and they dont really care as long as mataas ang utilization mo…There are guys na non-performer sa work pero mas mataas increase nila sayo. May mga requests sometime to work min 12hrs/day or even holidays para macover ung utilization targets (unpaid). Normal utilization charge is 45hrs/wk.

    Holiday works/OT/Weekend works are unpaid pero papasukin ka minsan for utilization pa rin.

    HR are pain in the ass…syadong makupad…admin works lang naman.

    just sharing my personal experience…:)
