I owe Google $18

I haven’t been checking my AdWords account for the past month so I didn’t realize that I have pending payments there. Been running AdWords for some small client and the monthly expenditure isn’t too much so I charge on an annual basis.

Anyway, the credit card I’m using for the AdWords account expired a couple months back and despite the fact that Google can’t recover the charges on me, the AdWords campaign continued to run. Before I’m able to go about it and fix it, I receive my final warning from them — that I’ll be hearing from their collection agency.

Now, that got me scrambling back to the PC and putting in my new credit card information. What if the collection agency was Adsense? :D

So, I paid Google their USD$18. I sure don’t want my other Google account get suspended for this.

It brings us to the topic why a recent study showed Google the “worst” in privacy [ see BBC article here ]. I don’t think it’s all about Google being careless and leaking user information to the public (like that AOL fiasco) or giving away logs to the US State Department (like what Microsoft and Yahoo did). I think it’s more about the fact that Google that the widest coverage in terms of user information. They got our email conversations in Gmail, our search logs, our AdSense account, our AdWords account, Analytics, RSS subscriptions (Feedburner!) and a whole lot more.

If there’s any company that can paint a good profile of any internet user, it’s Google. That’s why people think they’re growing too much to be a little scary at times.

Running a Google Adwords Campaign

I’ve had a Google Adwords account for some time now and have tried running an ad or two before using some free Adwords credits but this will be the first time I am running an ad campaign for an int’l client.

I did some quick research on my own and must read quite a number of articles about running an Adwords campaign, yet I can’t say that I already know everything there is to learn about it.

From my understanding, it’s as simple as:

  • Doing some keyword research. I use Overture Keyword Selector Tool as it gives me an exact figure of the number of searches in the previous month (though only for Yahoo). In conjunction to that, I also use the Adwords Keyword Tool just to verify if the search volume is relatively the same on Google.
  • Create a good copy for your ads. Make multiple copies targeting different potential audience and different selling points.
  • Optimize the landing page to adjust to the intended audience to maximize conversion. It could be in the form of newsletter subscriber, a registered member in the forums, etc.
  • Set the daily budget and hope that there are no competitors in the targeted keywords.
  • Watch and learn — wash, rinse and repeat.

Anyone have extensive experience with Adwords? Anything else I might have missed? My client’s targeted keywords are not competitive so I’m hoping for $0.01 PPC rate.

Google Adwords on Mobile Phones

I blogged something similar to these before and called it MobSense. Turns out Google has already thought of something closely similar and has now silently launched AdWords for Mobile.

Google Inc. has joined the mobile marketing playground with a wireless version of its AdWords service.

The Internet giant quietly launched the offering that allows AdWords customers to place marketing messages—including clickable links—in listings retrieved through Google’s mobile search service. AdWords customers can develop their own mobile advertisements and marketing campaigns, and can set daily budgets, establish scheduled marketing messages and pay only when consumers click the ad or call the business.

The U.S. offering follows April’s launch of a similar service in Japan. Google is working to patent a system for click-through ad placements that determines the type of device being used and automatically takes a user to a mobile Web site or places a voice call, depending on the phone’s capabilities.

CPC might not be the way with phones but CPA could be a good model. Since the Philippines is the SMS capital of the world, should we expect Google to do more testing on our local networks?

Post FAds Review

My latest review on PTB (Friendster Ads Declassified) was about the trial ad I did two weeks ago on FAds (Friendster Ads).

The most important feature that was lacking in the ad reporting was the click-through rate. Since FAds was basically just a CPM model, which btw one can also get using AdWords on Friendster (remember Site Targetting?).

So I went to Friendster and clicked on the AdSense’ “Advertise on this site” link. I logged in to my Googe AdWords account and breezed thru the wizard. Guess what, the minimum CPM rate is just $0.25. That means, I pay $0.25 for every 1,000 ad impressions or 4,000 per $1.00.

Had the Php1,000 ePin budget given to me was used with Adwords, I could have gotten roughly 75,500 ad impressions as opposed to the 30,000 eyeballs with FAds. Huge difference there. The ads would also have been bigger and all the text clickable directly to my own landing page and I get to know my CTR as well.

This only means that potential advertisers on Friendster will be better off using AdWords than FAds, not only value-wise but feature-wise as well.

So, I fired off a similar ad on Friendster via AdWords, set my budget at $1.00 per day and let’s see how it’ll fare.

AdWords your Way to Traffic

This is a series of tips I meant to send to Darren of ProBlogger for his “31 Days to Building a Better Blog” series.

Another way to get traffic to your blog is to advertise. If you earn a couple of bucks from AdSense, what better way to spend it back but via AdWords? You can advertise your entire blog thru AdWords or maybe just a section or a post.

I do this once in a while with several sections of my blog, like the “Pinoy Top Blogs” and the “Online Button Maker“. Both of which are earning a several bucks from AdSense daily, so in return I spend a dollar or two a day advertising it via AdWords.

Likewise, your blog can also benefit from seasonal fads that tend to generate a lot of buzz and searches in Google. The blog entries that I’ve spent on AdWords were the Gloriagate downloads, HongKong Disneyland pictures (in the Gallery) and the Pinoy Big Brother post. This gets you enough traffic especially if a lot of other sites in the search results are on top of you. A few days ago, my blog was nowhere near the first page of Google and Yahoo for Pinoy Big Brothers but a recent check in in the search results show my blog either on the first or second page.

The catch here is to spend no more than what you earn in AdSense. Set a daily quota like a dollar or two a day. In the long run, the unique hits and additional traffic will pay itself.

Advertising via AdWords

A few weeks after using my $35 free Google AdWord credits to promote some of my other projects and business, I realized I could also use it to promote my blog as well. Hmm, why haven’t I thought of that earlier?

Blog Herald summarizes several ways of advertising your blog, the paid way. Though my blog has been very doing quite fine with dozens of keywords, bringing in tons of search engine traffic, I thought I might spend some time targetting other keywords as well.

A quick glance at my internal stats showed some very good results on the ff. keywords:

There’s an idea I was experimenting on with AdWords and AdSense. I target relevant keywords using AdWords to direct searchers looking for it to a page about the keyword with an AdSense ad. I wait and hope that they click on a related ad and earn from it. My hypothesis is this — “Is it possible to earn higher revenue from AdSense using AdWords directed pages?” What I did was bid very low ona keyword ($0.05) and hopefully earn more than that from the possible clicks on the ads. Theoretically it is possible, but my little experiment could not verify that to a 100% certainty.

Experimenting with Google AdWords

While every blogger around might be familiar with Google AdSense, only quite a few are acquainted with (moreso, have actually used) Google AdWords. They’re fraternal twins, actually. While AdSense provides revenue for ad publishers like you and me, AdWords on the other hand provides the avenue for advertisers to market their products and services. And Google is the mother of all advertising machineries.

I was recently able to sign up for AdWords to check out just how powerful this program is all about. Once inside, you will be offered with a complementary set of tools to properly and efficiently run your ad campaign. It allows you to set how much you want to bid for a keyword when it is clicked and lets you choose how much you want to budget your funds on a daily basis. Lowest bid on a click is $0.05 but could go as high in the range of $80 for very popular keywords.

The Traffic Estimator approximates the CPC, average clicks per day and a potential budget for it if you want to be placed on top of the ads. These estimates are based on current advertiser rates. I tried keying in for “hosting” and it gave me numbers and stats in the double digits, proposing a daily budget that could buy you a brand new car if you want your ads to be always on top.

By using Google AdWords, one will fully understand the intricacies of Google AdSense. I will be posting more on the results of my experiment in the following weeks.
