Thousand Bears for Bicol Project (TBB)

Please help by spreading the word or donating stuffed toys or bears for this cause: Thousand Bears for Bicol Project

Today we received our 300th bear :) I will post photos in my blog this evening and send you all an update. For now, I wish to thank everyone who has so far contributed to the campaign — A grade 5 boy from Ateneo de Manila whose mommy showed him the blog entry and so he was moved to donate 20 toy puppies (puppies are good too!) ; 20 bears from a friend of mine from HSBC Hongkong; another 20 bears from a dear friend who has always been supportive of our causes; another 20 from my good friend Andrea’s kids.

Andrea has also been able to hook us up with Operation Compassion in Legazpi, together, we will help oversee the distribution of the bears on a date very close to Christmas (either December 22 or 23). Our prayer now is to hold a little salo-salo for the kids (almost a thousand of them) perhaps in one of the evacuation centers.

All day yesterday, I was worried about how I would get all the bears (and other furry friends) to Bicol and today the Lord answered my prayers. Through the help of our home church, Greenhills Christian Fellowship under the auspices of our churchmate Brother Mike Asperin, we will be transporting all 1000 bears for free to Legazpi on a PAF plane! God is truly wonderful and provides ALL the time.

Filipino associations in Manitoba, Canada and Sacramento, California are also getting together to send over some bears. I am amazed at the power of His hand when it moves the hearts of people everywhere. Please continue to keep those bears coming as we are still quite far from our target of 1000. Kindly forward this email to those whom you think would be interested to help us out.

What do we need?

Teddy Bears – new or in good condition
or friendly looking and cuddly stuffed toys that can be hugged by the children

We are also accepting art materials – notebooks, pens, pencils and crayons that we can pack and give to the children. In addition to play therapy, art therapy is also a proven effective tool in helping heal the children.

Where can you drop off the materials?

Quezon City — 41 Milkyway Drive, Blue Ridge, Quezon City contact – 918-906-8852

Makati — The Room Upstairs, 2nd floor, LRI Building, Nicanor Garcia (formerly Reposo), Makati City tel no. 899-9318

Alabang – Room 306, Medical Arts Building, Asian Hospital (clinic of Dr. Noemi Guloy)

Can we have the bears picked-up?

Some companies and schools are doing “bear drives” so yes, we can pick up a minimum of 30 bears from your school or office.

A Thousand Bears for Bicol (TBB) is an exercise in watching the way God’s hand works and seeing how wonderful and awesome He is in His kindness and faithfulness towards all of us. God cares for all the little children and is especially loving of widows and orphans. I know that through you, He cares for His children in Bicol. I pray that you allow yourself to be His vessel of love and kindness.
Thank you once again for spreading the word and God bless you all this holiday season.

Blessings and teddybear hugs,
Cathy Babao

Help Pyro meet Batista

This is one of those instances that one’s blog can make a big difference.

I think because I was crying all the time for the past few days, my husband thought to start an e-mail movement to get in touch with whoever CAN make Pyro’s wish happen: to be visited, or to meet Batista.

Personally, I don’t really think Pyro would mind if it was Undertaker or John Cena who he meets (and actually, he might be too tongue-tied or scared if he does meet one of his wrestler idols) so long as he meets one of them. It’s a cute wish really, made by a 3-year old… and it’s not like he spends all his waking moments asking for his wish to be granted (because right now, all he does is eat boiled eggs and rest).

It’s a long shot. So far, we’ve gotten e-mails telling us that they have forwarded the e-mail to someone who CAN help (sports writer for Inquirer, and someone who works for GMA’s Wish Ko Lang).

Ask and you shall receive… :) And we really hope Py will be rewarded somehow by something… to inspire him to fight some more.

Pyro is fighting the big C.

Maybe thru blogs and word or mouth, we could make this kid’s wish come true. Anybody out there reading this?

The Guimaras Oil Spill

It’s been more than 2 weeks now since the Guimaras oil spill incident and it seems help is very slow down there.

My mom called me up the other day and gave me updates about the incident. A lot of people have been affected. A lot of our relatives (from my mom’s side) are living along the coastline of Nueva Valencia either fishing, trawling or managing beach resorts.

Guimaras Oil Spill

The picture above was taken last February when I visited Alubihod beach, the northern part of Nueva Valencia.

I was told the because the wind was blowing eastward, some of the beaches weren’t affected yet. Still, there’s a huge posibility that the oil slick could spread even wider with the tide until that tanker is removed from 600 meters down.

We live in the Poblacion so my parents were’nt affected much though my mom told me they were collecting empty water bottles to fill them up with potable drinking water and deliver them to affected areas. Most of the people living along the coastline rely on deepwells so there’s a danger that they could also be contaminated.

How to hack a Coke vending machine

Haven’t tried this myself but here’s a lengthy explanation and tutorial on how to hack a Coca-cola vending machine.

There’s a vendo machine across the street beside the police station. Might just try this myself to see if it really works. hehe

Maybe harmless but just wait ’til those street kids learn how to do this. :D

Pinoy Top Blogs explained.

Due to the number of inquiries and emails I get about the Pinoy Top Blogs project, I did a quick break from regular work and setup an adhoc page for it here.

I hope that I may have answered the more urgent and hanging questions to all those who have joined the PTB system.

Why still in beta?
As of today (just 5 days old), the project is still in beta. Beta in the sense that I am still considering a lot of factors for this to really push thru publicly:

  • Acceptability. Do I have enough credibility (to bloggers) to put up and maintain such system?
  • Scalability. Will the server I am hosting this system be able to handle all the page requests (Apache connections) and mySQL queries. Tracking 5 very popular blogs could even stress a server more than hosting 200 regular blogs.
  • Standards. I am still working reconsidering on the standards or metrics to use in ranking. So far, the one in place seems fine. I coudl tweak and do a hybrid rating later on, if possible.
  • The system that I use now is also in beta.
  • Time constraints. I’m already lagged on several personal and commissioned projects.

The Art of the Saber

artposterThis is a short amateur video but a really cool one inpired by Star Wars:

A light saber fight sequence with the flavor of a Hong Kong martial arts action movie. This short is set in a dense forest of an unknown planet, where a young Jedi, eager to fight to help the Revolution, clashes with a Sith Lord in a battle where only one will remain standing. Music by Hans Zimmer, and a monologue extracted from an authentic Civil War love letter written in 1861, help to set the tone for this movie.

Download the 5:50 minute video (Quicktime) here. Apprx. size: 29MB.

and there goes “The Revenge of the Sith”

haydenAfter watching the 3rd and final installation of the Star Wars, The Revenge of the Sith, I kinda had this odd realization of the drama and the personality behind Anakin/Darth Vader and how the whole saga revolved around this character.

While most of us knew the Star Wars Trilogy (SW 4, 5 & 6) and had familiarize and sympathized with several of its characters, the one very archaic and vaguely personified for me was Darth Vader. After SW1, I could not imagine how Anakin would someday turn into the dark Lord Vader. Yet somehow, SW3 presented the twist of events dramatically that in the end, one could almost feel the raw emotions and actually sort of sympathize with him. I will leave the detailed reviews to those who are better equipped to do so.

Overall, I would say this one is the best of all six in terms of thrill-factor, effects and drama. And for the first time, I thought Hayden did a very fine acting.

Edgar Allan Poe’s 404

From my Inbox this morning:

Once upon a midnight dreary,
while I websurfed, weak and weary,
Over many a strange and spurious website of hot chicks galore,
While I clicked my fav’rite bookmark,
suddenly there came a warning,
And my heart was filled with mourning,
mourning for my dear amour.
‘Tis not possible, I muttered,
give me back my cheap hardcore! —
Quoth the server, “404”.

I am not a nerd. Am I?

Find out how nerd you are at

This highly advanced ‘test’ will determine once and for all how nerdy you are. Upon completion, you will be given a score (out of 100) as to just how nerdy you are, plus a nifty little graphic and link that you can share with your friends (if you have any) so they can see how they measure up!

I got 95% but I’m so sure I am much lower than that! :(

Dumb Laws

According to editors of TorrentSpy, MMDA’s unified number-coding system is a dumb law.

Here are this weeks dumb laws. Remember that these laws either exist now and are enforced, or still exist but aren’t enforced. They DO exist though.

Philippines: Cars whose license plates end with a 1 or 2 are not allowed on the roads on Monday, 3 or 4 on Tuesday, 5 or 6 on Wednesday, 7 or 8 on Thursday, and 9 or 0 on Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M

Mexico: Bicycle riders may not lift either foot from the peddles, as it might result in a loss of control. Also, anyone who whistled at or annoyed a bicycle rider could be arrested.

Canada: It is illegal to kill a sick person by frightening them.
