I’m just re-stating what Migs Dennis posted on Migs’ blog earlier — Top 10 reasons why not join the Ituloy Angsulong SEO Contest. Some of them are on the bleeding edge of humor and a few more actually hit the note which I’d like to echo here:

I’m posting this under the SEO category as I’d like share this little link-bait experiment I’m doing for the Travel Blog & the Urban Blog. For just over a year now, these two blogs have not really taken off in terms of traffic and repeat visitors. I have heard of people telling me they regularly visit these two blogs and even more people wanting to contribute for them. However, I’m still pressed on pushing both blogs to better traffic numbers.

Now that we’re witnessing the final phase of the transition from Inq7.net to GMANews.tv and Inquirer.net, both will be facing some setbacks as they move along and away from each other. I’m sure a new layout will unfold over at Inq7.net which will divide the real estate space equally between the two media entities.

A regular reader came to me asking for help a few days ago. Apparently, she lost a lot of traffic from Google. I checked the site and it’s not banned. All pages are still being indexed and it’s an old domain with a fair amount of backlinks.

Frankly, I don’t know, but it still amazes me that I am able to come up with 2 new domains/blogs getting PR7 in less than 6 months.
First, when I got Smart Wifi Chronicles late April this year, it was to move the discussions about Smart Bro from my blog to that dedicated blog. Now it gets around 600 unique visitors a day with and average 2,500 pageviews. So, you can just imagine how much traffic I lost on my blog when I move a huge chunk of the readers there.

In the last couple of months lurking at the SEO Philippines mailing list, I often read that the last two SEO contests are good ways of experimenting with stuff. However, I find it a little confusing as to how you’d gauge a certain optimization or technique to have positive or negative effects in your ranking when hundreds of others are also competing for the same keywords.

Most of you here might have already aware of the 2nd installment on the Philippine SEO contest.
This time the new keyword is ituloy angsulong which means something like continue the movement or something to that effect. It’s supposed to be composed of 3 words (ituloy, ang, sulong) but if you have them that way, you’d get results in the search engines.

If the question is a bit confusing, I’ll restate it — if you search your name in Google, are you happy with the search results?
Let’s call it ego-surfing.
So, let me ask the question again, you okay with your name in the SERPs?
I asked this because if someone is doing a background check on you, they’ll most probably hit Google first. Will the first page of the SERPs tell a good story about you? Or will it reveal a dark past you once had?
So, what are you doing to make a good Google impression?
This has been blogged about by a lot of people for several days now but I’d like to echo or butt in on this new link bait over at Text Link Ads.
The new link hook is called Blog Juice Calculator and uses a simple formula to compute how much blog juice you have. Mine’s 5.5 out of 10.

The calculation includes Alexa rankings at 15%, Technorati Rank at 30% and another 15% from inbound links in Technorati plus 40% from Bloglines subscriber.
I think they could do some more improvement on the formula.
[ Digg this! ] Since I’ve been installing and managing WordPress blogs for so many bloggers/clients, I have already outlined lots of steps to optimized blogs for search engines. I cannot guarantee that these steps will send you to the top of the SERPs but based on experience and experimentation, they’ve been helpful in one way or another.

The SEO party last Friday was great. Got to meet a few more people outside the blogging circles. I could not link to any page for the contest results and forgot who won the top 3 prizes though Anton has some pictures of the contestants on the front page of the SERPs here.

Just a quick link to Marc’s post about this open letter from John Bertrand of JNB Web Promotion, a local SEO outsourcing company which is was also a sponsor of the isulong seoph contest.
Read the complete story here.
Obviously a misguided concern, IMHO. Just look at the date of the open letter: Sep 26, 2006 8:55 PM.
Why, oh, why did it took Mr. Bertrand almost four (4) long months before composing and sending this email to everyone? He’s a member of the SEO Philippines YahooGroups too so there’s no reason he can’t reach his intended audience with the “message”.
I agree with Marc, just go ahead and remove the links and mentions about the sponsorship then let’s all move on.
While we’re on the topic of links and link baiting, let me share this other one I just found out: Are you a Big Fish?

Discussions at the SEO Philippines Yahoogroups points at the Jollibee Food Corp.’s website implementing some black magic (read: blackhat seo).

SEO experts say that Google Pagerank is a thing of the past — it’s not that realiable as it was before of a true measure of a site’s improtance. Hundreds of other factors play a role and most SEO professionals who really knows their stuff relies on these other factors.
Marc shares with us this new tool by SEOmoz Page Strength Tool.
SEOmoz’s Page Strength tool is intended to serve as an alternative to Google’s PageRank score in the toolbar, offering insight into how valuable, important and popular a site or page is as compared to others on the web. If a particular page is on a very popular domain, it may be considered more important than if it’s on a domain that doesn’t receive much attention and, likewise, the homepage (or root URL) of a domain will often be considerably more popular/important than an internal page buried deep in the site’s architecture. In many cases, data may not be entirely accurate, as the search engines and other sources that provide information fluctuate.
The numbers being crunched here can be individually pulled out of Yahoo or Google but what’s unique with this one is that there’s a formula at the back-end showing the Page Strength (PS) of your site.
I tried it with several of my sites and it seems to be consistent. My blog is showing a PS6 even if it’s onyl PR5 and I have another PR6 site which is only registering a PS3 on this tool. Go try it out for some fun.
