In keeping with the steady rise of demand for high-speed broadband internet in the country, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) has released a statement that the telco is planning to invest $2M to upgrade the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) cable system 100 Gigabit standards, increasing the bandwidth capacity by 200% in the process.

Yesterday, Globe Telecom boasted the fruition of their recent efforts (not to mention investments) in expanding their network’s reach in the country. In the press conference, Globe President Ernest Cu stated that the Ayala-led telco now has 100% coverage for 3G and is looking to do the same feat for 4G/LTE in the next 90 days.

During the first quarter of 2013, Akamai reports that average Philippine Internet Speed was at 1.4Mbps. One year later (Q1 2014), the average internet speed jumped to 2.1Mbps or about 49% increase year-on-year.
The NTC or National Telecommunications Commission has ordered health insurance Caritas Health Shield Inc. and training provider Center for Global Best Practices to stop bombarding Globe Telecom users with spam messages. This is due to the complaints filed by Globe itself regarding unsolicited text messages sent to its subscribers urging them to avail of the companies’ services.

Since late 2011, the SMS rates of telcos should have been at Php0.80 per text message as ordered by the National Telecommunications Commission. Failing to comply, local telcos have been required by the NTC to refund the multibillion-peso amount to their subscribers. Now, said telcos have approached the Court of Appeals to stop the Php7 billion refund and the reduced rate of Php0.80.
Sun Cellular has added two new budget Android smartphones to their roster, the Huawei Ascend Y320 and the Ascend Y600, which are being offered under the Sun Postpaid Plan 350 and Plan 450 respectively.

Last month, we reported that Globe is consolidating its mobile internet plans under the new GoSurf label replacing both PowerSurf and SuperSurf. Globe has denied it will phase out SuperSurf but it looks like they’ve actually started doing so this month.
Fresh from the announcement of NTC that regular SMS rates should have been Php0.80 instead of Php1.00 since 2011, it has estimated that telcos owe prepaid/postpaid subscribers as much as Php7B worth of refunds.
The Senate recently passed a bill that requires telecommunications companies in the Philippines to send out free text alerts to their subscribers in the event of impending calamities or disasters.
