Firefox 2.0 and the scrolling mouse click

Listen to article

Firefox 2.0The final release of FireFox 2.0 came out yesterday though I didn’t notice it because the RC3 that I installed automatically updated itself along with several plugins/extensions that are not fully compatible with it.

The best feature thus far that I noticed was the spelling tracker built in it — so, while I’m writing this post inside WP-Admin, I can see red dotted lines on words that had typo errors in them. A spelling check has long been wanted for WordPress but there’s no need for that now since it’s built-in with Firefox.

The only bug that’s been bugging me is that scrolling mouse click. I’m not sure if this is an isolated case but every time I go to a fresh new page and click on any link, the page just scrolls up to the top — it’s as if the link I just hit was a name anchor (e.g. back to top). I thought the final release would have fixed this bug but it’s still there.

Anybody else experiencing this same thing?

If you press F7, FF will disable ‘caret browsing’ (see post #17) which fixes the problem. As far as I can see, the problem is windows related (i.e. it doesn’t happen under Linux).

Still, this is a huge problem which Mozilla should fix. I would have gone back to IE under Windows without the F7 tip.

Hi,

I also found this bug when i upgraded to Firefox2.0 from older version. It was esp annoying when you do all the hard work to find the link in a long page(eg: Javadocs) .
I hope Mozilla fixes this very soon.

had the same click/scroll issues, very irritating. Thanks to ‘Vieux Bandit’s advice, I hit F7 and it seems to have solved the problem so far. F7 disables/enables the ‘Caret Browsing’.

To check if it’s on or off, press F7 and click somewhere near text on any page, if a blinking curser appears, then Caret Browsing is enabled, press F7 to disable, this should come with a pop up warning. Also, scrolling with curser and home page keys should be back to ‘normal’.

This mouse problem has been driving me nuts. It was reported as a bug (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=357726) but apparently one can solve this by hitting F7. I’ve tried – so far so good.

Yep. Definite “link-click-screen-jump” bug in FF2.
Have Logitech MX500 with latest drivers for
MSWXP-SP2 and no similar reaction in any other
app.

Otherwise, FF2 is great! One small improvement
might be to make the active TAB a bit more noticible.
(i.e.: slight coloration or slight size increase)

Looking forward to the day Mozilla rules Microsoft!

I’m having this problem and have had it since RC2 and its driving me crazy! I updated to the final 2.0 hoping it would solve the problem and it hasn’t?

Does anyone know if I reinstall 2.0 after removing 2.0 will that solve the problem? If so, how can I save all my Bookmarks before I do this?

I haven’t encountered that problem ever since I started using Beta 1 of Fx 2. I also like the session restore feature that I have used as an extension since Fx 1.5.x.x. There are also some isolated rants about Firefox 2 bugs (i.e., keeps crashing, etc.) but I think none has been confirmed yet to be a bug within the browser itself.

I installed the final version and it didn’t have the scrolling bug I had in RC2. It seems like if you update from RC2 to Final, it inherits the bug but not if you do a fresh install.

The Firefox Release Candidates have been hanging on my MacBook for the past few weeks, requiring a forced quit. I could not use it for more than 10 minutes without a restart. And I didn’t notice 2.0 was officially released until I saw your entry.

So the final version likewise has the same problem. That’s why I’m using Camino for a while.

But I do love the online spell checker. It’s like typing on Microsoft Word…

No scrolling mouse click problems on my FF 2.0.

Love the built-in spell-check feature as well ;)

I’ve yet to download my copy of FF2 (sounds like Final Fantasy doesn’t it? lol) I’m excited but since you guys mentioned about that little bug, I’m thinking ‘should I download now or wait for that bug to be fixed?’

Any ideas?

FF2 also scrolls up for me. I thought it was something wrong with my blog’s AJAX. Thanks for pointing it out.

I love the spell check feature.

Because of these new features these web browser packed everytime they come up with new version it’ll not be surprise if this so called “thin client” becomes your fat client (blame it to web 99.0, ajax, superwheel etc..) then the interoperability gap between these browser become wider.
