Among the free message board softwares available to the public, phpBB seems to the one of the most favorite of the lot.
Frankly, I have not extensively used, styled nor administered a forum running on phpBB. For about four years now, I have had considerable experience styling & hacking InvisionBoard and vBulletin for my own sites and a few others for foreign clients. Not once I have been commissioned to do one using phpBB.
My gut tells me to gravitate away from phpBB and if you are running multiple servers with hundreds of domains and where about 2 dozens of each have installed phpBB, you’ll know what I’m getting at. It’s a nightmare to keep track of all of them, much more if there are serious security risks and all installations that need to be patched at the soonest possible time. Did I also forgot to mention that phpBB security alerts come out almost every other month or so?
If you read some local IT news in the recent months, you would have at least heard of government sites and even the one ran by domains.ph being hacked (by script kiddies) because of unpatched phpBB vulnerabilities.
Posed with that predicament, one would really consider junking phpBB altogether.

A 14-year-old Tucson boy and his girlfriend have been arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder after the boy attacked his father with a knife.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday that deputies arrived at a home Monday evening to find the young pair and the boy’s wounded father outside.
The father told deputies that when he walked in his home, his son tackled him from behind and put him in a headlock.
He then wrestled with the boy and was cut in the hand by a knife before he was able to call 911.
The sheriff’s office says the boy was in state custody and was not supposed to be at the home.
They say evidence at the scene and statements by the boy and his 17-year-old girlfriend made it clear that they “were intent on killing” his father and mother, who was not at home at the time.
The pair was arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault and burglary.

Tucson police are asking the public for help in finding a man suspected in three armed robberies of businesses on the southeast side.
The man, who was captured on surveillance cameras, pointed a gun at all his victims, said Sgt. Matt Ronstadt, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
The robber is wanted in connection with:
• The Sunday 7:45 p.m. robbery of a Giant Express Conoco Gasoline & Convenience Store on the southeast corner of East Broadway and South Houghton Road.
• The Monday 6:15 p.m. robbery of Walgreens on the northeast corner of East Broadway and South Houghton Road.
• The Tuesday 7:50 p.m. robbery of the Quik Mart on the northwest corner of East 22nd Street and South Houghton Road.
The robber is described as being about 18 to 22 years old and 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 2 inches tall. He weighs about 140 to 170 pounds and has red hair, freckles or pockmarked skin, Ronstadt said.
The getaway vehicle is described as brown or champagne-colored, late-1990s model Kia four-door sedan.
There possibly were four more people inside the car during one of the robberies, said Ronstadt.
