Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus to retail for $649 on June 26

Google is re-introduing the Samsung Galaxy S4 and will package it as Nexus-like variant running on vanilla Android OS. That means there is no TouchWiz, just plain stock Android UI. This confirms our earlier report of the Galaxy S4 Google Edition.

On the short side of things, that also means less features (or gimmicks, depending on how you view it). No gestures, eye-tracking, camera add-ons and all of Samsung’s wiz.

However, if you’re not into S-Health & all of Samsung’s extra software, you should definitely consider it. After all, on the plus side, you will get fast version updates and more memory since there is no extra Samsung software.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Nexus Edition specs:
4.99-inch display full HD Super AMOLED @ 1920x1080p, 441ppi
Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 1.9GHz quad-core
Adreno 320 Graphics
2GB LP-DDR3 RAM
16, 32GB, 64GB
Up to 64GB microSD
HSPA+, LTE 100Mbps (6 bands)
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, dual-band WiFi Direct
Bluetooth 4.0
GPS w/ aGPS support
NFC
IR Blaster
13MP autofocus, rear camera with LED flash
1080p video recording @ 30fps
2MP front-facing camera
1080p video recording @ 30fps
7.9mm
Li-Ion Battery 2600mAh
Android 4.2.2 Jellybean (upgradable to future versions)

This Google Edition Galaxy S4 will have LTE and uses Qualcomm’s quad-core chip. It will be available in the US starting June 26 for a price of $649 plus tax (more or less Php29k) in the Google Play Store.

This is misleading.. This phone is not part of the Nexus line…just a google edition samsung gs4.

Now it sounds better. Most Smartphone users, Galaxy for example, do not need most of the Galaxy’s features. So having this Google edition of Galaxy S4 is like a better offering coming from both Google and Samsung. I hope does not take that long to hit our local shelves. :D

Ano ba meron sa 5-inches na phone at gusto ng tao? Hirap kaya hawakan. Yung 4.7 nga sumasakit na yung daliri ko eh…

Anyway, it is about choices and we respect that.

Two important things to note here :

    1. You’ll get a free usable 12 gigs (vs 8 gigs on the Touchwiz variant)

    2. You will NOT get software enhancements like blinking led notifications, picture mode control and other touchwiz goodies.

    Stock android isn’t always good….

So, you’re saying that the absence of the gimmicky bloatware and “features” that is Touchwiz is a con on having a stock version of S4? Ugh, another hipster on the way.

      humanoid

      1. I find the blinking led extremely useful
      2. It’s always better to have Picture Control options/choices rather than NONE at all
      3. The S4’s camera software is a LOT LOT better than the stock

those things that I have mentioned are far from being gimmicky…it’s just a matter trade offs and what you might or might NOT like doesn’t isn’t indicative of what is (supposed to be) better or not.

Kanya kanyang trip lang yan, inu-ulit ko…hindi porke’t stock Android yan eh wala ng disadvantages….

How did you learn about the specs? Why did google choose yung Snapdragon na S4 imbes na yung octa-core na Exynos model?

    • Avatar for james james says:

Hmm maybe for the LTE support? And besides nde pa naman talaga 8core un nagrrun sabay sabay e. Kaya better if its quadcore… Aaannddd the title of the article is somewhat misleading… Sabi s4 nexus then comment is google hasnt named it yet as nexus device…?

    • Avatar for analog analog says:

US market is the target. qualcomm has the built in LTE modem.

    • Avatar for Ice Ice says:

It’s because Samsung is not releasing the source code for their Exynos chipset. Sources are already available for almost all Snapdragon chipsets so it is easier to port AOSP to those models with all of the features working properly.

typically, nexus has no branding in front of the phone. this is a galaxy s4 with stock android that will be sold by google via play store.

  7. Avatar for analog analog says:

I dont see this as a nexus device. this is a nexus experience in terms of UI and other software implementations. But,when it comes to update, just hope that updates will come from google directly. Most probably, stock/AOSP version release/roll out will be faster/easier compared to the one with touchwiz (without waiting for carrier release too).

I bought an S4 from Globe 2 weeks ago. I have no problem with TouchWiz but I’d love to experience a stock Android on my phone. I hope Globe and Samsung will release a software update where we could choose to get either pure TW or stock Android. At least it’s official and the warranty will still be there.

  9. Avatar for JustSaying JustSaying says:

Its AOSP basically and no, not the Nexus 5 since reports are indicating LG is up for the next Nexus unit.

  10. Avatar for deegee deegee says:

or just run cyanogenmod on your galaxy s4. unless ayaw mo i-root yung s4 mo.

  11. Avatar for vanilla vanilla says:

Touchwiz is just nothing but a piece of junk that’s designed to consume a large part of onboard storage on Samsung phones. Not to mention, the gimmicky features are just plain silly and not practical for everyday use.

  12. Avatar for Mr. Bait Mr. Bait says:

Google will surely announce a new Nexus Device aside from this Nexus-ish S4 :)

Still have high hopes for a Nexus device with Snapdragon 800!

  13. Avatar for Yusuf Yusuf says:

Wrong! This is JUST a google edition and not part of the Nexus line. Nexus wtf?

  14. Avatar for drouble drouble says:

This is definitely the perfect phone for me. All the hardware goodness without the bloatware and gimmicky interface that is Touchwiz.

A pure stock Android interface beats a manufacturer-skinned interface anytime of the day.

  15. Avatar for prince prince says:

This is not a nexus device… just a google editon

A nexus device will carry the google and nexus logo

    But this will certainly not..

It a real s4 running stock android

  16. Avatar for JKisaragi JKisaragi says:

I’ve read somewhere that this will just be a “Google Edition” phone and not exactly part of the Nexus line. Hmm…

    • Avatar for JKisaragi JKisaragi says:

Wait, so is this really the new Nexus? Meaning the white Nexus 5 LG rumors that have been popping out were false?

I’ve just seen a slide from Google I/O with the phone being labeled having the “Nexus experience”, but it doesn’t exactly state “the new Nexus” or something to that effect.

Hoping for some clarification please. Thanks! :)

    • Avatar for JKisaragi JKisaragi says:

      *Nexus 4

Now enough with my weird monologue.

    • Avatar for Bob Freking Bob Freking says:

Google hasn’t actually named it anything; just a Galaxy S4 that can work similar to the Nexus.
