Qube QTouch running on Windows 8

Listen to article

We featured the Qube QTouch Windows tablet back in July and borrowed a review unit which arrived last week. They claim it is Windows 8-ready so I took the challenge and installed the Developer Preview of Windows 8 the other night.

I initially tried installing Windows 8 on the Asus UL20FT laptop but had several failed installs with the 64-bit version. I then tried the 32-bit version and it worked flawlessly.

The install on the Qube QTouch was much easier and faster (did not bump into any problems) via an external DVD drive attached via the USB port.

The tablet runs on an Atom Z-series processor and has 1GB of RAM so I thought it barely passed the minimum system requirements for Win8.

Qube QTouch Windows 7 Tablet
10.1” TFT Capacitive LCD Display @ 1024×600 pixels
Intel Lincroft Atom Z670 1.5GHz
Intel Whitneypoint SM35
1GB DDRIIRAM
32GB PSSD with Mini PCI-E Form Factor
1.3MP webcam
WiFi 802.11b/g/n
Bluetooth 2.1
53Whr battery capacity
Windows 7 or Android OS supported

The result, a pretty solid Windows 8 tablet. The resolution was a bit of a problem though as shown in this YouTube video.

Most apps would not load which is probably due to the screen resolution.

Seems like Windows 8 for tablets require a minimum of 1024×768 pixels while the QTouch is only 1024×600.

Anyway, I’ll be guesting on ANC’s Future Perfect with Tony Velasquez in an hour and will be bringing the tablet with me.

The Qube QTouch retails for Php19,999 for the WiFi-only version and Php24,999 for the 3G+WiFi model.

Do not buy this product. I bought one last July 8, 2012. Monthly it malfunctions. The company is concerned only about HOW TO LEECH THE BLOOD OF THE CUSTOMTERS MONEY. Thrice I asked for their help about THIS DEFECTIVE PRODUCT yes they did respond but at the end THEY WANT ME TO PAY P 6 THOUSAND PESOS BECAUSE ACCORDING TO THEM THE BOARD SHOULD BE REPLACED. I TELL YOU THIS IS A MODUS, AT FIRST IT WILL WORK THEN ONCE IT STARTS MALFUNCTIONING THEY WILL ASK YOU TO REPLACE PARTS OF IT COSTING TO A LOT OF MONEY. ABOUT THE WARRANTY? DON’T BELIEVE IT, THEY WILL NOT HONOR IT. SO FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO BUY THIS DEFECTIVE PRODUCT I SINCERELY ADVISE YOU NOT TO. OR ELSE YOU’LL REMOARSE AT THE END. MALAKING PAGSISISI AT PAGUUBOS NG PERA SA ISANG PRODUKTONG SOBRANG DEFECTIVE AT SA ISANG KUMPANYA NA WALANG CONSIDERATION SA CONSUMERS. ALL THEY WANT IS TO EARN BUT THEIR PRODUCTS ARE DEFECTIVE! RATING OF THIS PRODUCT ! NEGATIVE!!!

instead of listing its specifications which we already know from its website.
How about a more in-depth review like running speed tests, actual battery life test (e.g. running a videos non stop), and other test. And how about comparing it to other Win7 Touchpad Tablets.
How about trying to install other OS like android, linux ubuntu, opensuse, etc…

i’ve read sa qube website that the 3g version of the qtouch has a resolution of 1024×768. Would it have worked using that? Also I’m reserving my judgement until the final version of win 8. I wish qube offered to install android os in the qtouch.

hmmm have you tried installing yung drivers. kasi since i have tried using WDP OS with stock drivers talagang mabagal sya (im using intel 950 Graphics) but upon installing the drivers w/ compatibility settings bumilis sya ng 80% and running na yung mga apps

Just discovered it’s because of the screen resolution.

Hi

I installed mine in lenovo s10 -3t and it works flawlessly…. I just have to make a regedit for the resolution but everything else is fine.

sure it runs, but that video showed so it’s really slow and unresponsive.

The video should be replaced or taken down. It’s misleading. It connotes that it is the general experience of the OS when clearly its not. The tablet did not meet Windows 8’s Metro UI minimum display requirement: 1024 x 768 (ideally on 1366 x 768).

But that’s the point and I also said the same thing during an interview on ANC yesterday — the new Windows OS should not put a high requirement for screen resolution. Imagine when millions of people start upgrading from Win7 to Win8 only to realize their netbooks (1024×600) would not work.

Besides, the title of the entry was very clear “Windows 8 on a Qube QTouch tablet”. Had it been titled “Windows 8 on a Regular 10-Inch Tablet”, I would have agreed that it would be mis-representing.

Put simply — Qube claims their tablet is Windows 8 ready. I just showed to my readers that the claim is not completely true.

Microsoft has been criticized a lot for inconsistent Windows experience. This is one way they can improve it: specifying minimum requirements for OEM’s. The same way they are doing it for Windows Phone 7.

Apple users enjoy a consistent user experience because it controls every aspect of their products: hardware, software and service. Microsoft knows this but also know that PC is about choice so they are trying to find the sweet spot between.

And btw, 1024 x 768 is a low requirement even for netbooks.
