The Asus Padfone 2 has already been unveiled in Taiwan today, showcasing a different hardware configuration and better specs compared to its predecessor.
Thanks to the folks at VR-Zone.com we can now have a preview of what the ASUS Padfone 2 and the Padfone Station have to offer. For starters, the Padfone 2 now has a bigger and better display, sporting a 4.7-inch LG Super IPS+ panel with 720p resolution. It has a maximum brightness of 700 nits which means the screen is very much visible under broad daylight.
On the front are the earpice, front-facing camera and three capacitive buttons just below the display. Right on top are the 3.5mm headset jack and microSIM slot. On the right side are the volume rocker and power button while the left side is devoid of any buttons. Down at the bottom is the microUSB port with MHL support which also serves as a connector to the Padfone Station. Flip it on its back and you’ll find its 13 megapixel Sony CCD camera, LED flash and speaker grill.
As for camera performance, it is capable of recording 1080p videos at 30fps, 720p at 60fps and up to 100 continuous shots at full resolution. It is powered by a Qualcomm S4 Pro APQ8064 quad core processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, a non-removable 2140mAh battery and Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. The entire package weighs 135g and measures 137.9 x 68.9 x 9mm.
For the Padfone Station, it’ll transform the Padfone 2 into a 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) slate with IPS display. It has a slimmed down battery of 5000mAh compared to the 6600mAh battery found on the original Padfone Station. But the 1600mAh sacrifice actually puts the Padfone 2 in a good position in terms of weight. The Padfone Station weighs 514g, add the phone’s weight of 135g and you’ll get a total of 649g. That’s even lighter than Apple’s third-generation WiFi-only iPad (652g).
The ASUS Padfone 2 is expected to become available for purchase in Taiwan next week in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants with price tags ranging from NT$17,990 to NT$21,901 or around Php25,500 to Php31,000.

Do you have to buy the Padfone station separately? Or it is included when you buy the phone? and you cannot use the station with out the Padfone? Because if not, its like you buy a tablet that cannot be used without the phone… How does it work? What if you left your phone at home and you only brought the Station what will happen?
The phone and the station could be bought separately, but it’s cheaper when bundled. You cannot use the tablet without the phone, the phone is the brains of the duo. The tablet is just a bigger screen and with a pretty hefty battery so you can extend your phone-now-tablet life when they ‘volt-in’.
I like the term that you use: “volt-in” haha!
I think the phone openly displayed is prone to robbery. ^^
