Hands-On: Nokia Lumia 720

Nokia’s latest smartphone in the Lumia series is the Nokia Lumia 720, a mid-range Windows Phone 8 handset that was released last week with a suggested retail price of Php14,590.

We just got it yesterday and finally fished it out of its box today for a quick photo-op.

The Lumia 720 is a 4.3-inch smartphone with a decent hardware configuration. It’s also one of the fewest handsets that support Wireless Charging (we have the Wireless Charger with us to test as well on a separate post).

The unit looks pretty slim and sleek; has a polished and glossy finish all around it as well. The polycarbonate shell feels good on the hands and comfortable to hold. We especially liked the white color variant that we have here.

WP8 on the Lumia 720 runs very well, the UI looks smooth and apps load quite fast even if the handset only has 512MB of RAM. It’s also interesting to note that the Lumia 720 has a peculiar 6.1MP camera, not the usual 5MP (Lumia 620) or 8MP (Lumia 820) many other handsets have. Our initial photo and video tests didn’t really impress us but we’re still taking more sample under different conditions and variety of subjects, just to be more thorough.

Nokia Lumia 720 specs:
4.3-inch ClearBlack IPS LCD display @ 800×480 pixels, 217ppi
Corning Gorilla Glass 2
Qualcomm MSM8227 Snapdragon 1.0GHz dual-core
Adreno 305 Graphics
512MB RAM
8GB internal memory
microSD card up to 64GB
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, dual-band
HSDPA 21.1 Mbps
Bluetooth 3.0
NFC
6.1MP AF camera, Carl Zeiss, with LED Flash
720p video recording at 30fps
1.3 megapixel front-facing wide angle camera
Li-Ion 2,000mAh battery
Windows Phone 8
Wireless Charging support
GPS w/ aGPS, GLONASS
127.9 x 67.5 x 9mm
128g

The specs are decent — coming in with a newer Snapdragon chip, Carl Zeiss optics, NFC and Corning Gorilla Glass 2. The low resolution of 800×480 pixels might turn off some people though. We only had an afternoon with it so we’re still looking at some of the features that are exclusive to the Lumia line.

Personally, between the Lumia 920 and 820, we liked the look and feel of the Lumia 720 better (but that’s just me).

The Nokia Lumia 720 has a suggested retail price of Php14,590 and will be available in black, white, cyan, red and yellow color variants. Our full review, including sample shots and benchmarks, will be out in a week or two.

APPS Availability is one of the problem with WP8. Dami nga apps nang android, kasya ba yan lahat sa phone mo?

512mb of ram is not a let down… if u you are more concern about the ram capacity because of games then buy an android phone.

Mas maganda parin ang Android phones kasi super daming apps. Oo, maganda ang specs nito pero talbog parin ito sa Myphone A919i HD.

WP is not like Android wherein RAM is a big deal. 512MB is still lag free in WP8. The only concern is there are some graphics intensive games which cannot run on this. Otherwise everything’s fine.

“LAME 512MB of RAM” for a 14k investment? And nokia will expect the people coming for this product of theirs? OVERPRICED for an UNDERRATED RAM!

      Mukha mo overpriced!

over priced becaused of RAM? Hell No! Why don’t you look at the other side of it, other features and specs of it. The camera, the exclusive apps, the design, and other advantage of it compared to other WP8 devices!

My favorite mobile OS is still Windows Phone. Now with Windows Phone 8, i’ve been wanting this. But the problem is that there are still limited choices Nokia has the Lumia 920, 820, 720, 620 and 520. Samsung has the Ativ S, HTC has Windows 8X and 8s, and Huawei has the Ascend W1. Right now my choices are Lumia 720 and 520 because of their pricetag. Hoping to see a full review of these phones soon. I’m also waiting for rumored new Lumias coming out this year.

Nice phone but pricey for over $300.00. Dual core snapdragon paired with 512 RAM ?. If slow browsing in the internet is not an issue, I guess some people would buy this phone. For the same price, I could get the Nexus 4 (Google’s flagship phone) from Google Play. No offense to Nokia users, it’s just my opinion.

c’mon Abe, you’re being complacent. this article is pretty pathetic!… you call this a ‘hands-on’… there is no new information here that would be coming from a real hands-on with a functional unit.. for all we know, you just got to a Nokia store, got your cellphone camera clicking on a non-functional display unit…LOL

Don’t worry, we will publish the actual review in a week or two.

This is just a heads-up to readers who have been asking us if we have a review unit.
